Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, we are fortunate to have Lizards's Thicket available on a lazy morning when cooking doesn't seem like an option. It's not just the specials and the pies are hand written on a chalk board, or that the servers seem actually interested in how you are and exactly how you want your meals prepared but it's actually fun to go there. Our server got all excited telling us about how they make the biscuits from scratch and she insisted on getting us packets of the " good butter" not the fake kind because biscuits taste better with real butter. Most places get annoyed if you have substitutions but here it's almost encouraged. I saw the manager mopping floors not just supervising. It's old school, it's warm, the food is simple and fresh and prepared with care any way you like with a staff that is more than special. You just don't get that talking into a kiosk in a drive thru and breakfast is the most important meal, so treat it as such and enjoy a step back in time at Lizard's Thicket.

This place has the best southern food!!! It was like my Grandma's cooking in South Carolina. The service was fast and perfect. The restaurant was very clean and nice. The staff thanked us for stopping by and it was a great experience. The Collard Greens were awesome and the Fried Chicken was perfect!

The service was amazing. I had the flounder, French Toast and eggs. The flounder was seasoned to perfection and cooked just right. Very delicious breakfast.

Great Food and Great service. Very relaxed environment. I will be back as I travel to Blythwood twice a year.

It has been quite some time since I've been to a Lizard's Thicket but I always enjoyed their food options and recall it being fairly affordable. Those things don't seem to have changed much over the years and something about some things staying the same when so much else hasn't is incredibly comforting. I also appreciate that since the sides are made ahead of time in large batches, it's pretty quick so even as a sit down restaurant you can get in and out fairly fast. For the price, it felt like a better option when passing through than the fast food options off the exits. All in all, it was a good meal. The staff seemed to be a little overwhelmed even though it wasn't particularly crowded inside. There seemed to be a lot of call in orders, though. The phone was ringing off the hook for most of my visit. My waitress was nice. She was serving a large group when I came in so it took some time before she could make it to my table, but that gave me time to study the menu. I ended up choosing the fried flounder with squash casserole and okra & tomatoes. The food came out pretty quick and everything was good. Whoever dropped it off at the table was even nice enough to cover it with wax paper as I was washing my hands when it was ready. Hard to beat for $10 for a filling meal when compared to other places these days. It may not be the prettiest food you'll ever eat but it certainly hits the spot. I even placed a to-go order for my husband and it traveled and reheated well. As far as my food goes, I did find the batter of the flounder to be a little salty but a little lemon juice and hot sauce balanced it back out. The stewed tomatoes and okra were also a little on the salty side but not nearly as much and better than being bland. All in all, it was a good deal and far better than what I would've likely received at a drive-thru for the same price or more. If you're ever in SC and pass one of these while feeling hungry, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it over the fast food options nearby. I will say I think the one in Florence has been my favorite, but it has been many years since I visited so who knows if that still would be the case today.

Southern comfort food at its finest1 Meat + 2 or +3 and you will have a hard time deciding which sides. Fried chicken, fried flounder, mashed potatoes and gravy, cole slaw and squash casserole were all top notch and the okra and tomatoes was outstanding! Friendly servers treat you like family. Save room for dessert.

Not many restaurants were open on Thanksgiving, but this Lizard's Thicket location was. They were properly staffed and had very little, if any, wait time. The restaurant appeared to be full of families who were getting together for Thanksgiving. Our waitress was very nice. She had several tables but was able to take care of us quicky. She was fast with refills and didn't hover like some do. Our food was very good. Rather than order the traditional Thanksgiving meal, we all ordered what we liked the most. The baked chicken was well cooked and seasoned. The mac and cheese was good. The collards had a lot of flavor. The fried okra had seasoning on it. The country fried steak was very good and the gravy was great. The only part that didn't live up to our expectations was the beans and rice. They were both dry, but didn't take away from the rest of the meal. The cornbread was delicious as always. These guys did a great job preparing families for Thanksgiving!

The main menu! There's more online.

Great spot--friendly, fast, with delicious food. Lots of special/options, too. We stop here on our way north to NYS and coming back south to Florida. It has never disappointed us. It's a chain, but customers rate this one on University Drive the best.

But luckily, they were open for business, and a good business at that. Our family all got waffles: chocolate chip, red velvet, and sweet potato, with impossible chicken, traditional chicken breast, and bacon. Y'all. Y'all. So tasty. All of it. The flavor upgrades of the waffles have extra shebang additions, which aren't obvious in the menu, worth asking about. R&B was playing in the open space, which, by the time we left, was bustling. We were just more early than the regular crowd. Truly a soul food place, we were happy to be there, white family of 4, in a place serving a predominantly Black clientele. Our waiter, Leshayla was excellent. One note: bring cash, there's a credit card service charge if you use it.

"Retreat? Let's start with the espresso martini, which arrived looking like it had just lost a bet with a gallon of skim milk. It tasted like someone whispered the word "coffee" into a glass of dairy and then threw in three coffee beans to give the illusion of effort. Fancy? Sure. Flavorful? Absolutely not. I've had stronger coffee vibes from a candle. Didn't get any appetizers, probably a blessing in disguise. Straight to the pasta, which came out looking like it had just been scooped out of a kid's menu at a bowling alley birthday party. Imagine Chef Boyardee got promoted and immediately overcharged for it. That's the vibe. As for the service, it was slow enough that I had time to consider starting a new life as a lake hermit. When it came time to pay, I literally had to write down my order to help the server -- who then still managed to create a culinary version of musical chairs with our table's meals. Everyone got someone else's dish, which might've been fun if it were a potluck. It was not. The scenery? Gorgeous. The inside of the restaurant? Super nice. Honestly, if they'd served the ambiance instead of the food, this would've been a five-star experience. But alas, The Retreat truly lived up to its name -- I retreated straight to the nearest gas station for a Lunchable and some dignity.
