The portion of the Old Dock on view tells stories from Liverpool's past, not only as an emerging maritime port but also of the engineering feat that it took to build it. Hidden beneath Liverpool ONE the Old Dock was unearthed by developers in 2001. Following this the excavation of the area featured on Channel Four's Time Team programme in 2008. The free tour is so worth it and because it is only every Tuesday it just feels really special. But surely it could be open to the public for more than one day a week? It was really interesting to learn of how important the design of the dock was, how the port prospered but sad that the Old Dock was eventually considered too small to deal with the amount of maritime traffic. Objects found in the dig are on display and a giant screen shows an animated view of how the view out from the dock would have looked in 1715. On the tour I was only able to view the east section of the dock which included a tunnel which is thought to have linked to Liverpool Castle.
