You go through the old control room, the ventilation systems around and under the building, into the tunnel where the cars are, and then underneath the road! So very cool, since you can only ever go there on this tour. The history behind everything truly makes you appreciate science/ engineering and what people have done decades ago, and it's all still used today! It is also recommended to wrap up warm. Some main features include a personal guided tour of Georges Dock building, as well as the ventilation station for Queensway Mersey Tunnel which in my opinion is a must see. This tour is a fascinating journey, helping you to explore what happens beneath the city streets! At just £5 admission for a 2-3 hour tour, its a great deal.

If you can, ask for Gerry and tour with him--he's truly passionate about his work, history, and the outdoors, and he conveys that passion brilliantly. Really great ride...for a quick turn and burn on the Mersey Ferry's Snowdrop…read more We hopped on the ferry from the Gerry Marsden Pier (Liverpool side) and hopped on and off (but you don't have to) Seacombe (Wirral side). Since we skipped the 50min tour (we were already on a bus tour two days prior), we made it a quick out and back via the commuter ferry times. Going before 9a.m. (or after 5:30 p.m.) will save you in cash and time. The staff both on shore and aboard were extremely helpful and nice. They made the trip seamless, and it's probably 10min one way (10min back). It's too short for seasickness, so it's twice as good. It was an iconic trip (even as brief as it was), and you can do it on the cheap, and TIP: Pay on the other side! Recommend the commuter ferry!

The free tour is so worth it and because it is only every Tuesday it just feels really special. But surely it could be open to the public for more than one day a week? It was really interesting to learn of how important the design of the dock was, how the port prospered but sad that the Old Dock was eventually considered too small to deal with the amount of maritime traffic. Objects found in the dig are on display and a giant screen shows an animated view of how the view out from the dock would have looked in 1715. On the tour I was only able to view the east section of the dock which included a tunnel which is thought to have linked to Liverpool Castle.

You can tell that the tour guides really enjoy their work, love history and stories, and are genuinely warm, funny and lovely people.
