One time for reasons beyond my control at work I arrived a few minutes late, they sent me through to get changed. Once I had changed they told me I was more than 5 mins late and couldn't join the class. If you're going to do this why send me through, I literally changed in less than 2 minutes?!? I essentially decided not to do business with them anymore at this point and just join a gym that offers free classes - roughly the same cost and if I'm late it's not the end of the world and I have no where to go. To add insult to injury on this, they essentially told me their cancellation policy would mean I have to pay for another month of classes I had no intent on using after this experience. They made no exception and charged me for the full month even though I didn't come. Clearly care about their margins rather than any customer experience. Strongly suggest to avoid these money grabbing folks whose rules suit them, not you. Just join a good gym with classes.

The coaches are knowledgeable, motivating, and genuinely care about helping you improve--not just during the workouts, but over time. I really appreciate the positive atmosphere and the sense of community. Everyone is welcoming, and the coaches make each class feel engaging and purposeful. Whether you're looking to get stronger, improve your fitness, or simply stay consistent, Functional Lifestyles is a fantastic place to do it. Highly recommend Functional Lifestyles Palo Alto to anyone looking for great workouts, excellent coaches, and a supportive community!

I have been attending classes and doing personal training at Functional Lifestyles since June of…read more2021. Over the years, I had worked out at a variety of places, but during COVID many of them stopped offering in-person classes, and some never reopened. I'm someone who really enjoys taking classes, so I was intrigued when I found Functional Lifestyles, which at the time was located in a rather funky area of Palo Alto. Since then, FL has moved to a wonderful location on High Street, just around the corner from Whole Foods. So, not only can you get in a great workout, but you can also pop into Whole Foods and do your grocery shopping at the same time! And, even better, FL has its own parking lot, so you don't have to drive all over Palo Alto looking for a place to park. When you join FL, someone does a full assessment of your physical abilities, giving you a baseline before you begin classes. You are then assigned a check-in coach who monitors your progress and helps keep you on track. I find this to be one of the most unique things about FL. I have had the same coach since I started in 2021, which has given me a wonderful sense of continuity and personal attention. There are also several different programs and packages, so you can choose what works best for your schedule and needs. The class structure at FL is different from anywhere else I've worked out. Classes are limited to 10 people and have two trainers, so there is plenty of individual attention. Each day of the week features a different workout, and the workouts run on a six-week cycle. After six weeks, an entirely new cycle begins, so there is always something new and challenging. I had never done many of the exercises we do in class, but the trainers are incredibly attentive and adapt exercises to the ability level of each participant. I am one of the oldest members at FL, but I have always felt supported and encouraged by the trainers. They never make me feel inadequate or like I don't belong. Instead, they make me feel like I am exactly where I should be. I also do personal training once a week with one of the best trainers at FL (who also happens to be my check-in coach), and it has made a tremendous difference in my strength and mobility. I genuinely look forward to my workouts every week. My personal trainer is also one of the class instructors, which is especially nice because I know he always has my back. I honestly can't think of a better place to work out in the Palo Alto/Peninsula area. The coaches are knowledgeable, attentive, and encouraging, and the other members are friendly and supportive. After more than five years at FL, I can honestly say that I hope to continue working out there for a very long time. If you're looking for a place where you can get stronger, improve your mobility, be challenged at your own level, and feel like part of a community, I highly recommend giving Functional Lifestyles a try. You should try it--you'll be glad you did!

The classes can get pricey if you do drop in classes, but they do have promotions 2-3 times a year where you can buy class packs with no limit.

Locker room is pretty small, especially after I just visited the Castro and Marina studios. It's fairly clean and the class I went to was half-full, so I didn't have to share my tread or floor spot. The wipes are also easily accessible! However, it seems like they have less bands compared to other locations. As I mentioned, the class wasn't even close to being packed, but there was only 1 light band left when I got to the station. One of the biggest issues has been the constant turnover of trainers. Several have disappeared without any communication to members. Along with that, the training schedule has been very inconsistent, which makes it hard to stay on track. For me, building trust and a solid relationship with a trainer is essential to getting the best results. Having to repeatedly adjust to new trainers, while they also have to relearn my limitations and goals is frustrating and disruptive to progress. What's even more concerning is the lack of response from management when these issues are brought up. From conversations I've had, other members are feeling the same way. It gives the impression that there isn't much care for employees, and that ultimately impacts the member experience. I really wanted to like this gym, but the inconsistency and lack of communication have me reconsidering renewing my contract.

I spent most of my time at the office and got out for some studio classes or the occasional weekend hike. I'd never played sports or worked out at a gym before. Jin was great about listening to my goals and putting together an approachable, challenging workout plan. For our workouts, I got immediate value just from the first few sessions because he helped fix a bunch of issues with my form. I really appreciated his focus on the correct form because I'd screwed up my back a few years ago and didn't want to re-injure myself. Our sessions start with a warmup, and then a full body workout with a bunch of compound lifts and other exercises. No workout is ever quite the same. As I got stronger he would increase the difficulty to ensure that it was challenging but not too difficult. After training with him for half a year, it's been a complete transformation.
