My son is a high functioning autistic that was initially interested is martial arts, but is not physically strong. Gracie Jiu Jitsu is the perfect style for him and Professor Trey has had experience teaching special needs students. My son was very excited and enthusiastic for nearly a year and moved up in belt rank before he lost interest. All of the coaches were understanding of his way of learning and self expression and made the lessons understandable even for him. I think he was attending to make his dad happy and I had no problem not wanting to go anymore. He did learn a lot for self defense. By that time my daughter was completely fascinated with what her brother had been going about and took his place as a student. She is about four months in and has tried every class that is offered. She enjoys the technical qualities of Jiu Jitsu, but also likes the real world aspects of the no gi classes. She also likes the Judo incorporated into the takedowns classes and especially appreciates how kickboxing rounds out what is missing from a complete MMA education. I think she will be practicing all of these for many years. I hope she can stay with Gracie United for a long time. They treat you like family and encourage the students the same way. I recommend this school and trust all of the teachers, coaches , and professors with my children. That should say plenty.

The instructor, Shawn, greeted me with a smile. The atmosphere is laid back. The instruction is clear. And everyone treats each other with respect. We took a group photo, and they invited me to come back. I recommend anyone traveling to Slidell to visit this school and train.

I absolutely love this gym! If you want a challenging workout that makes you stronger and leaner…read morethis is it. I was a member of UFC Gym in Chicago for three years and loved the boxing and HIIT and was in the best shape of my life. I moved to Mandeville and joined Orangetheory and have been there for a year. I did not see the results I expected after a year of consistent training and eating well. I came across this gym and took the free class....wow! My theory is if I don't hate the trainer during the workout it's not a good workout! The owners are so friendly and welcoming. The members are supportive. It's a small gym so, if you don't care about bourgeois gyms where people spend more time taking selfies than on a serious workout than this is your place! I encourage everyone to try the free class. You won't regret it!

I thought the people there cared about him. I have highly recommended this gym to countless people over the years. Unfortunately, we had to cancel his membership because the owner, Tory - a professional boxer - decided it would be ok to threaten to get in the ring with my son and "go a few rounds" with him. Not in an effort to teach or guide my son but simply because as my son was in a sparring match he didn't hear a command that Tory gave him. I am beyond disappointed.

I don't go here regularly but I've dropped by to roll quite a few times since 2006…read more It's exactly what I would expect from a bjj gym in Nola. It's like a pop-up in the back of a gym. There are exposed brick walls and some other characteristics you expect to find in these old buildings. It's next to a bar. The students are all friendly and many of them are interesting characters with crazy patches or mismatched neon color rash guards. One guy had a patch on his gi of Johnny Cash flipping the bird, which is the best possible patch if you ask me. I'm surprised there isn't a bar in the back of the gym or a brass band playing while we spar. Professor Matthias is an excellent teacher. I'd also imagine he'd be a great coach ringside as he is always very good at identifying opportunities for attack when we spar. He's also a really down to earth guy with some good stories. I wish I had the time to do bjj seriously again. It's frustrating to know that your skills are devolving while the bjj game keeps changing and evolving, but I guess that's just what happens when you get old. If I did have the time and inclination I would be proud to be a member here. You should check it out.

Being a girl, I have experienced some not so friendly training partners who have a thing about rolling with girls. This was not the case here. Everyone there was super nice, and I was glad to see another girl in the class! The instructor was super technical and thorough. He went over the technique in detail and then gave us plenty of drill time. After technique, he reviewed what he covered before it was time to roll. After a few rounds, he summarized the technique again, which I thought was awesome; repetition really helps new technique stick! What I loved the most was that before he dismissed class, he went around and asked everyone if they had any questions. He answered everyone's questions with patience, and did not rush, although it seemed another class was getting ready to start using the mats. Overall, I had a great time here and I will definitely check them out again whenever I go back and visit.
