Our party of six still had a great night. We enjoyed a good range of dishes, both starters and mains. We had shared spring rolls as an entree. These were very tasty. All the mains were terrific too and a number of these were well know standards. These comprised of gado gado, nasi goreng with chicken, beef rendang, yellow rice and finally sayur lodeh, vegetable curry. This was very tasty fresh food and happily we couldn't fault it. It was a very good meal and service was good too. Sadly there were no ice or ice buckets for wine which was disappointing on a hot night. But still a most enjoyable night.

There is a sign at the front but at night it's hardly noticeable and on a windy day, you might see the signage on the ground rather than upright. It's a shame, because once you walk in to the side gate, the venue is quite amazing. Gorgeous courtyard that's friendly and secure ( for kids to run around) and lots of outdoor seating for the warmer months. I can see many diners spending a relaxing evening here with delicious food and some beer or ice cendol. Inside the restaurant, it feels like a reused old pub, with church like structure and walls. Lots of gigs posters around which sends the message that it's client group are maybe the hip young professionals. Certainly when I was here there was no other Indonesian diners. Food wise, it's not the usual 'street food' you would find walking down the streets of Jakarta, so whilst the menu is familiar, it's certainly not a typical day to day meal. Looking at their Instagram account, I see Yuni visiting Bali and talking about lots of Balinese food, so maybe the flavours are more traditional Balinese ( but not the ones you find at popular tourist haunts). It's definitely a home cooked traditional meal. Although I was salivating scrolling through the their pics and menu, I have to admit that the flavours I got was not the ones I was craving. Not that the food was not good, it was delicious but like I mentioned, had flavours that maybe are specific to a region that I'm not used to. The tempeh for example was battered and deep fried, where you would usually find them crispy fried on its own or marinated and fried in its saucy goodness. The meals also came out more expensive than other places, especially if you were used to the student budget Indonesian haunts. The Nasi Ayam campur ( mix plate of rice, chicken and sides) were $22. Other mains were $13-$20 without rice. So it does start to add up. Overall, it's worth trying for yourself if you enjoy Indonesian food and see what you think

I've only been here a few times and I have noticed some changes on the menu. Previously on offer were meal style dishes, rice with chicken, rice with fish etc. this is common in Indonesia restaurants and they also represented common dishes found in Indo restaurants albeit being a bit unusual to Western flavours I.e the Pecel Fish for example. More recently, the menu seems to be catered more towards bigger variety of diners. Dishes on offered are of the more well known Indonesian meals with some crowd pleaser like the spring rolls, deep fried calamari etc. I've found that meals are now designed as mains to be shared, with rice dishes to be ordered separately ( as opposed to previously individual meal style). Price wise though, this means a slight increase, still cheap meals though for average $15-20 per person. I think this is a smart move and have definitely attracted more diners. Overall, this is a nice Indonesian / Asian restaurant, but I do miss my Indonesian flavours and unique dishes so I am not a regular here but certainly don't mind the odd meals every now and then.

Char Kwee Tiaw after hours, no cooking needed…read more A long day, BoxFit session done around 8:30pm, now I'm hungry for some quick goodness to satisfy this craving. Woohooooo, Eureka this place is still open, we were the last customers. As we walked in two Ceiling fans were working hard, I don't think the AC was on, it was HOT, steamy, the room is filled with South East Asian aromas and it's not even a 40 degree Melbourne day, lots of goodness has been cooked and served before us, humidity, smells & sweats, reminiscence of a Hawker street somewhere in KL, Kuala Lumpur. I can feel my sweat from the BoxFit session has a new flavours now. From the Street level, this place is nothing fancy, the bright Green Jade colour is the only attractive feature about it, BUT what they are serving are incredible for what they are charging, they could and should charge more. Started with the CKT (Malaysian and Singaporean loves to abbreviate words) or Char Kwee Tiaw, Fried Rice Noodles, then Char Hor Fun, Combination Fried Rice Noodles with Egg Gravy sauce and lastly some Curry Puffs or Samosa (Indian) or Pastel (Indonesian). This pastry varied inside, but has common ingredients; Potatoes, Curry and Chilly. It was the right decision, not sure whether my muffin top would agree, worry about that later. In under than 5 minutes after we ordered, those goodness were flying onto our table .... so QUICK .... they served the best first ..... CKT - Char Kwee Tiaw, easy 8.5/10 ....VERY strong aroma of the Pork Crackling and Chinese Sausages, BIG Prawns just needs that burnt-wok taste, makes it a little drier .... That was a joy for around $12 Char Hor Fun 7/10, not quite there, rice noodles needs to be fried more but the Egg Gravy Sauce was tasty, it can be better and traces of the egg yolks still prominent, that tasty runny eggs .... about $12 Curry Puffs easily 8/10, fried to perfection, balanced ingredients and served hot, very important in my opinion, the aromatic flavours lingers as you bite into it, $5,50 for three. All these flavours plus Sambal & Chillies makes my palate sings. Life doesn't get much better than this after a long long day. Simplistic Joy and no drugs needed, just some CKT. A decade ago or so we might not be able to get these kind of offerings, so I must thank & commend the Chef and proprietor of the business for bringing that Hawkers' spirit and providing these goodness for us to enjoy.
