Here's a very special Little Public Library:…read more Central Tacoma FREE RADICAL Media Exchange http://www.flickr.com/photos/68010601@N03/7569281658/lightbox/ It was born when the nearby Martin Luther King Jr Tacoma Public Library branch was closed. The Hilltop is full of all sorts of innovative people, re-inventing and invigorating the area. Actually, this is a little West of Hilltop proper, but the Hilltop can-do spirit carries over. The steward of this LPL, an artist named RR Anderson, created this amazing free resource. Unusual in many ways, this LPL is a line of shelves down an alley way. The shelves have a wonderful provenance; they're donated from the defunct Stadium Video. The offerings here are unusual and fantastic as well. In addition to books, they have zines, dvds, mix tapes and cds. The kids and I are going by today to bring a bunch of books for MLK day....and I'm hoping to find some zines in exchange! Make sure to stop by, bring some media and get some! Hats off to Little Public Library #666, Central Tacoma's FREE RADICAL Media Exchange!!! Diabolically resourceful.

The directions are totally correct. The pinpoint on the Yelp app is incorrect as it has this closer to Peck Athletic Field. I just got on S Oakes then turned onto S 17th St and there is a little alley way before you hit S Andersen. I was a little scared to drive down the alley way because I didn't know if you could drive down it or if you had to park and get out and walk to the library. The alley is one car length wide with hidden driveways so drive carefully and look to see if someone is coming up the alley in your direction. Also, if you drive too fast you'll probably miss the library. I was totally shocked by how well put together this little station is. It has more of a selection than the other library on N Oakes. There is a little walk way where you can scan the latest additions to the library or add a few items of your own. I think there is some signage that notes where you can donate large amounts of items to keep the collection fresh. The pix from Jay S, show how you can donate money to keep the collection going strong. It's just so quaint and cute. I didn't dare press the DIY Customer Service button because I didn't want to disturb someone. This little library is free of course and has the motto of "take a book, return a book". There are VHS, audio cassettes, a USB hook up for e-books (I'm not sure how that works), nonfiction and fiction, magazines, and more. I love that the people who put it together covered the library with plastic strips/sheets to keep the rain out being that it's Washington as such. I took a VHS and exchanged it for the book I had in my car...Superfudge by Judy Blume. I will definitely be back, and I went on the website http://littlefreelibrary.org/ourmap/ and surprisingly these free little libraries are all over the world. I just really have to say again what a wonderful idea this is to share with the community. I really really appreciate it, and I'm sure the community does too.

Classes: I haven't had any issues signing up for classes if you register when the class opens, or dropping in for classes. It's been hit or miss based entirely on instructor (in my opinion), so if you find someone you like, try to keep going to that class. Y staff is friendly and helpful, their membership system is pretty slow so just a warning: don't go with member questions if you can help it - it can take forever. Childcare: my daughter likes the child watch, it's got great hours Monday - Thursday (mornings and evenings), then limited hours Fri/sat (mornings). In general the Y is clean and there is space for everyone, though depending on when you go you might need to modify the exact thing you're doing if people are already using your machine or weights etc. I don't usually have an issue and feel like this location is better than other similar gyms in my experience. I'm looking forward to the improvements when they're complete.

The new building is okay, it's fancy and new, with brand new equipment but the locker rooms and…read morebathrooms are nasty. It is OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive, and not worth it at all. I would not recommend. The prices are unreasonable, the YMCA is supposed to be about youth development, health and community, but the prices are absolute robbery.

Keep in mind since it is busy, be patient while you are waiting to be helped while you are in the check out. Even with someone at each register, it can still take a couple of minutes to get through the line. It is located in a plaza, so parking should not be a problem. Books can be expensive, especially if you are buying them brand new, so coming here definitely will help your wallet! Even though the books may be used, a lot of them are in pretty good condition.

While the variety of books available is impressive and well-presented, I won't be returning. This employee was a middle-aged man with dark hair, glasses and adult acne with the inclination to whistle. When I asked him about the bathroom key, he was incredulous, as if all first-time visitors should know where it is kept. All the sign on the restroom door said was that it was available at the counter opposite it. Forgive me for thinking this meant the employee kept it and handed it out at their own discretion. But I suppose that would be too much responsibility for him. He certainly didn't think customer service was one of his job responsibilities. He spoke with undisguised condescension and irritation, and when I didn't move in such a way that pleased him -- thinking to take the key off its placard rather than take the whole thing with me -- he became even more patronizing. As if he were addressing a child, he used a baby voice to tell me anyone could pocket the key if it wasn't attached to something bigger. All this over something so small as a bathroom key. But this interaction kept him from his larger goal, which was joking around with his younger female coworkers. I felt embarrassed for me. I especially felt embarrassed for him. And I now will think of the Half-Price Books in Tukwila not as a calm, welcoming environment, but as an embarrassment with a bathroom. For this employee, I would suggest practice in: 1. "Hello" 2. "How can I help you?" 3. "Here you are" 4. "It's my pleasure" Simple as that.
