Do you know about Little Free Libraries?…read more Imagine a birdhouse of books. That's what LFLs typically look like...but there are several different species. Tacoma is lucky to have 4 LFLs - with more to come! And there are 100's internationally. Little Free Libraries tend to have themes within their collections. This one runs the gamut - adult and children's literature and non-fiction, like home improvement books. There's a notebook for comments and to log activity. Hate to say it, but it's really friggin' CUTE! The mission of Little Public Libraries: - To promote literacy and love of reading. - To build community - To build more than 2,510 Little Free Libraries around the world. (The number reflects how many libraries Andrew Carnegie built.) If you're in the area, leave a book - pick up a book. Kudos to this Little Library's steward, Craig Rounds, and his neighbors for supporting it!

Again, I'll say that this is a really awesome idea. I do like the other Little Free Library on S…read more Anderson & S. Oakes St a little bit better since it's bigger and the general look is really cool, but this little book stand really suits it's purpose for the community that it is in. Check http://littlefreelibrary.org/ourmap/ for more LFL's in the area. You'd be amazed how many are in your community. It's a fun way to give back and share books and media that you truly enjoy with the people that live nearby. I actually drove all the way from Lacey to get a gander at this library and then I found out there are like four down here in the Olympia area. There a like a bazillion (Disclaimer: not the actual number) LFL's in the lower Puget Sound, so if you have some books or CDs or A-tracks or Betamaxes or records or magazines that are in pretty decent shape that you're looking to get rid of or rather share with other like minded individuals, stop by the nearest little library and unload your treasures on the shelves. And it's free....so there really is no excuse not to.

Classes: I haven't had any issues signing up for classes if you register when the class opens, or dropping in for classes. It's been hit or miss based entirely on instructor (in my opinion), so if you find someone you like, try to keep going to that class. Y staff is friendly and helpful, their membership system is pretty slow so just a warning: don't go with member questions if you can help it - it can take forever. Childcare: my daughter likes the child watch, it's got great hours Monday - Thursday (mornings and evenings), then limited hours Fri/sat (mornings). In general the Y is clean and there is space for everyone, though depending on when you go you might need to modify the exact thing you're doing if people are already using your machine or weights etc. I don't usually have an issue and feel like this location is better than other similar gyms in my experience. I'm looking forward to the improvements when they're complete.

The new building is okay, it's fancy and new, with brand new equipment but the locker rooms and…read morebathrooms are nasty. It is OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive, and not worth it at all. I would not recommend. The prices are unreasonable, the YMCA is supposed to be about youth development, health and community, but the prices are absolute robbery.

Keep in mind since it is busy, be patient while you are waiting to be helped while you are in the check out. Even with someone at each register, it can still take a couple of minutes to get through the line. It is located in a plaza, so parking should not be a problem. Books can be expensive, especially if you are buying them brand new, so coming here definitely will help your wallet! Even though the books may be used, a lot of them are in pretty good condition.

While the variety of books available is impressive and well-presented, I won't be returning. I even…read morecut my visit short after experiencing such rudeness from the male employee running the sale counter in the back. This employee was a middle-aged man with dark hair, glasses and adult acne with the inclination to whistle. When I asked him about the bathroom key, he was incredulous, as if all first-time visitors should know where it is kept. All the sign on the restroom door said was that it was available at the counter opposite it. Forgive me for thinking this meant the employee kept it and handed it out at their own discretion. But I suppose that would be too much responsibility for him. He certainly didn't think customer service was one of his job responsibilities. He spoke with undisguised condescension and irritation, and when I didn't move in such a way that pleased him -- thinking to take the key off its placard rather than take the whole thing with me -- he became even more patronizing. As if he were addressing a child, he used a baby voice to tell me anyone could pocket the key if it wasn't attached to something bigger. All this over something so small as a bathroom key. But this interaction kept him from his larger goal, which was joking around with his younger female coworkers. I felt embarrassed for me. I especially felt embarrassed for him. And I now will think of the Half-Price Books in Tukwila not as a calm, welcoming environment, but as an embarrassment with a bathroom. For this employee, I would suggest practice in: 1. "Hello" 2. "How can I help you?" 3. "Here you are" 4. "It's my pleasure" Simple as that.
