Scarily tempting…read more I've had a surprising number of articles framed by Tom and the attentive staffers at Artworks, personal items and also prints, photographs and art in my capacity running a briefing center at Tivoli and they have never disappointed. They even shadow-boxed and framed my old license plate without batting an eyelash. The framing is done artfully, stylishly, quickly and always ready on time. The suggested colors for matting and molding are always pleasing to the eye, and the end result is an article that looks just as it should on any wall. There is a complete restoration department as well, for old photos or paintings that need a little TLC. Their framing work is not inexpensive, but it is always perfect and worth it. But the gallery of art and artisanal crafts which comprises the well-lit space on West 6th is killing me. It's impossibly beautiful stuff, and increasingly hard to get out of there without spending a small fortune. There is even a room full of art deco and period barware. Crystal, blown glass, woodcraft, metal sculpture, mirrors, art glass--carefully chosen and curated, it's like a museum of fine craftwork and I hate it--it's that good. The nefarious plan has you in the store, waiting for a few minutes as your framed work is produced from out back when something, invariably catches your eye. Damn. I'm wise to you Artworks. I'm keeping my shades on and staring at the wall of frame samples and leaving with my wallet intact.

At their suggestion, it was framed between two panes of glass to excellent effect, not something I'd have considered myself. Today I nearly bought a gorgeous snifter for $36, or a set of cordial glasses from the 40's for about the same. I'll be back when I have a larger apartment -- and when I again drink alcohol. There are a number of labs around the city in community centers, the M Station, Trinity, and the ARCH, to name a few. The staff at AFN are amazing!!! They really want you to come in and help them in the way that YOU want to contribute, unlike other volunteer gigs. As a trainer, I supervised labs, taught basic computer navigation skills and helped clients complete resumes, search for jobs and other resources, and apply for state benefits. In the office, I did research, put together events and public relations campaigns, and edited class curriculum. I also lent my hand in the IT dungeon, where all the nerds hang out. I would definitely recommend AFN as a place to volunteer. As the saying goes, if teach a man to use the computer, then he can use it to get a job. Here, you can actually do that.

I don't want other readers to think that I was exaggerating the negativity of my experience just out of impulse. So I am writing this update to say, with calm objectivity, that this is the worst business transaction I've ever made. For all the information packed in the comment the owner left under my original post, he really didn't explain exactly how I was charged. I will outline it as clearly as possible: *****The actual charge was $99, $107 after tax.***** --I incorrectly wrote in my original review (and the owner, even though he provided a detailed walkthrough of the entire exchange, didn't correct me) that I had been charged only "$50+". --This was to install a $25 CPU heatsink fan, which I had purchased myself, and is a necessary but not integral component in performance. --The job was done after 10 minutes, and, in retrospect, the removal of my entire motherboard was clearly to make it seem as though I was getting a better deal for the $100/hr rate I was being charged. (And yes, it was an hourly rate, so I'm sorry for originally suggesting that the technician was running up the clock on purpose to raise the fee. It would've cost $100 even if he had finished in 10 minutes.) --I was absolutely not quoted forthright when I called to set up the appointment, contrary to what the owner wrote in his comment. In this respect I'm definitely partially to blame for my bad experience. I really should have asked for a quote up front, and the only reason I didn't is that I find these types of things uncomfortable (and I'm young and naive, sure). At the same time, an absurd price is an absurd price, categorically. If I went to a grocery store and saw that they charged $8 for a box of cereal, I would probably go home and give it a bad review on Yelp, even if I didn't buy anything and avoided getting ripped off myself. In this case, the fan was installed correctly (which a technician at any computer repair service will be able to do), but my negative experience stemmed from the amount it cost me. I'm using my recourse to Yelp to explain exactly what happened, and in the hope that at the very least it may remind whoever reads it that they should get a quote before they purchase a service that they end up really regretting. As a final note, I should mention that the technical reason I didn't want to try to install the fan myself is that there's a small risk of your screwdriver slipping when trying to unscrew the old one from the CPU. If the screwdriver touches the motherboard, it can zap it with static electricity and completely fry it. You'd have to go out and buy a brand new motherboard, which is a nightmare situation because that's usually the most expensive part in any computer--the one I have in there now costs a little over $100.

I had two other elevator companies come out to look at my 20+ year old elevator that was constantly malfunctioning. Hundreds of dollars to these "experts" and the problem persisted. HET came out and diagnosed the problem, with precision, in less than an hour. I was amazed at the level of knowledge possessed by the technician. He came back a few weeks later with a replacement part and fixed the elevator. It has never worked better. The technicians couldn't be more professional and their prices cannot be beat. They also don't charge for ridiculous add-ons (mileage, gas, lunch, etc.) that some of the other companies want to charge you for no good reason.
