Sugar Studio by Tiers of Elegance has a huge variety of cupcakes. When I visited on a random…read moreSaturday, I saw at least a dozen different flavors: wedding cake, cherry chip, peanut butter chocolate chip, strawberry, lemon and many more. They also had chocolate chip cookie sandwiches, frosted sugar cookies, cake pops and slabs of frosted cake to go. There was just so much sugary goodness everywhere I looked. We picked up a variety pack of cupcakes to go, and my kids loved them. The cupcakes are more on the smaller side, which is great with me because they are so rich -- you really only need two or three bites and you're satisfied. The frosting on the cupcakes tastes like it's a buttercream base. The cupcakes are meticulously decorated -- all of them had a sprinkling of edible gold, so it felt that much more elevated. Fancy cupcakes! If you want to make a big impression on someone, gifting a cupcake or two from this place will do the trick.

We got the Oreo, red velvet, and a big slice of chocolate cake with white frosting, which was my personal favorite. The cake texture was at once moist & fluffy.. The ratio of frosting to cake = A+. The frosting was not too sweet, which was lovely. Sugar Studio knows how to create beautiful and delicious cakes! It's one of my new favorite bakeries! Service was super friendly and parking was easy (they have a lot).

Always in pursuit of "off the beaten path" gems you can often find in places in small town Indiana,…read morethe Red Room Cakery fits that bill. Prairieton....small township, population maybe 1300...maybe, 12 minutes from the south side of Terre Haute. Discovered on a Facebook post indicating a "pop-up from 10am-2pm" on the Sunday we showed up, the Red Room Cakery is actually wholesale and not normally open to the public. Lots of cake displays and brag books about, cakes are clearly this guys jam, in addition to the baked goods he sells thru restaurants in a 50 miles radius of his Prairieton ovens. And by "this guy," I am referring to Chef J who is here this day with his side kick employee Olivia. And don't underestimate Olivia and her shy demeanor, as a current student of Purdue's hospitality program and an award winning cake baker from a 4-H event not so long ago, she knows her way around a baked good. I always say "behind every good man is a better woman" and that be Olivia in this case. Chef J could not be more of a sweeter teddy bear type personality if he tried. Kind of a bit unexpected considering that this spot is not normally open to the public, which really means "I have enough business and I would rather not deal with the public." But on this day and in this moment of this pop-up that I show up with my aging folks from Terre Haute, we were treated with real midwestern hospitality...the kind that I have forgotten about living on the west coast and in giant urban cities around the planet. I tend to drill down hard to get to the meat of a business or a person, so after grilling this overgrown teddy bear a bit, Chef J is explaining to me his military career (thank you for your service!) and how he got into cooking before he is inviting me around the back to see the action of the kitchen. The smell of hot sugar and yeast coming from an oven, painting a glaze of a gooey cinnamon concoction on top of the twists baked just so, the perfect amount of flaky crust and mildly doughy center to make this twist Mid-westernly delish. We are consuming one right on the spot before we depart. Some lava cakes for good measure, we walk out with some items to enjoy at home and happy to have made the acquaintance of Chef J and Olivia. And those lava cakes.... Keep in the frig vs the counter and then pop in the microwave for about 30-40 seconds....incredible! Really delicious. The actual establishment is again not normally open, so I am appreciating this unicorn moment. There is no hot coffee option, music chiming in or even many places to sit. Nothing about this spot says "hang out/linger." Rumor has it that Chef J tried pizza for awhile and it just did not catch on. What I clearly know and the greater Praireton area does not....bakers make the best pizzas because the dough is always exceptional. But anyway.... I consider the Red Room Cakery and our unique moment to visit and buy some baked goods moment a big win and really enjoyed taking the trip over from Terre Haute. Chef J is celebrating 10 years of being in business this summer. I am on the look out during all visits now moving forward when in Terre Haute to see if the baked goods served at an eatery come from the Red Room Cakery. Because there they are a little bit delicious and a little bit Midwestern, which makes the perfect baked good in my eyes.

Owner was very down to earth and honest with his suggestions. Also we got to sample a few things, so that's always a plus. We started by checking everything out, the inventory was low but still a few options. Sampled a couple of ice creams. Ended up getting a Muncher cup is what i think they were called. Two scoops of ice cream with a cupcake. Another member of our party got a muffin they enjoyed, then our last memeber got a single cupcake and drink. The owner gave us a brownie on the house too. Ended up eating inside and watching a little bit of a cooking show that was on. Along with chatting with the owner. All in all if you want a great environment and treat this is the place to go. Was updated that they will be serving beer and wine soon. Also at some point will be doing soups and sandwiches. I'm sure this business will do great if they keep up the good work!

This place is delicious however I am very disappointed with the service…read more My fiancé and I booked them for our wedding months in advance. 2.5 months before the wedding we reached out to see if we could meet up to just go over and finalize it all before the wedding. They had recently moved and we were told that they lost the book with our order. They still had the picture of the cake we wanted but no information on numbers of cupcakes, cake balls, or flavors. Mind you we only found out because we reached out to them... Okay crap happens so I asked if we could meet up again and go over and offered have a date that worked with our schedules because my fiancé only has one weekend off a month. I explained that and said that I didn't remember the flavors we had decided on and would like to meet anyway. The owner read the message and never replied. After talking to my fiancé we decided that we would go a different direction with our wedding and I sent another message to let them know that and told them I hoped they had a great week. Again, they read the message and didn't reply. You cannot comment on fb to leave a review so that's why I'm doing it here. The treats are delicious but the lack of response and communication of this mistake has really turned me off from them and I won't be going back. Now 2.5 months before our wedding we are working to book someone else. I know it'll all work out but still it's an inconvenience and the fact that we haven't heard anything else from the shop is a huge disappointment.

I picked this provider because the reviews suggested that she was good and her pictures also showed…read morethat she has talent in unique cake designs at a very fair price. BUT Communication: I was having trouble getting information out of her and had to ask several questions to get an answer. Response time took forever and the responses were very short UNTIL I started to speak about payment then everything was fine. style: Don't get my wrong the cake was pretty close (the two stars) We had a Taco Bell themed party and the inspiration cake was fake Taco Bell packs and "sauce" which I assumed would be made out of JELLY. NO, she put actual taco bell packets (did tell me she had to use real ones) and actual Taco Bell sauce on our cake that dried and looked disgusting. The very front of the cake was messed up. I was going to try and fix it myself when I got home but I was afraid I would make it worse. The whole thing just felt sloppy. Taste: This cake was not good. The layers of actual cake was thick and dry and the "filling" was so thin. The icing was thick that almost everyone picked most of it off and there was so much left over. And don't get me started on the taco sauce and the taste of that . Overall, I was very disappointed and will be going somewhere else next time.

Really liked it. I believe it's mostly, if not all, vegan. I know they were experimenting with some…read moreitems with dairy a while ago but I did not notice any non-vegan items while I was there, so not sure if that's still a thing. Anyway, it is a little out of the way. It's walkable from downtown but not really in the downtown core. Pretty quiet when I was there, but the atmosphere felt approachable. Some of the chairs were like school desk chairs (adult-sized, of course) that I haven't seen since I was in primary school which was kind of funny. The guy at the counter was cheerful and friendly. They looked like they had run out of some of the hot savory items by Saturday mid-afternoon, but there was still a wide variety of sweets. I believe the current owners are Indian, and you see some of those flavours featured. I got: Samosa handpie: Good, not mind-blowing, but good. Nice flavours. If you like a flaky crust, this is not it, but I liked the rustic pastry crust. Pistachio cardamom donut: Loved it. Before I moved to Bloomington, there were a few bakeries that offered vegan-GF cake donuts that I loved, and this was the first thing I've gotten here that reminded me of that. Pleasant texture and strong cardamom flavour, not too sweet. I think these are baked donuts, so they're a little different from regular fried donuts, but in a good way IMO. Rose dream latte: Milk with rose syrup topped with coconut whip and nuts, no espresso. Tasted great, but more of a dessert drink than I was expecting. The coconut whip was quite thick. The concept could probably use some refinement, because the whip was too thick and rigid to drink without a straw, but the nut pieces were too big to go through a straw, and so I couldn't figure out the best way to drink it. From what I understand, there are some longtime fans of this place who feel like the quality has dropped since the most recent change in ownership, but as someone who had never been here before, I really had a good experience. I get why people would be upset when something changes, but if you are considering trying this place for the first time, I wouldn't be too put off by the negativity around the change in ownership. There's no other place specialized in vegan baking in Bloomington, so I think it's good to support what they are continuing to do here, and even though I am partial to vegan food I wouldn't say that if it wasn't also GOOD. They also had some refreshingly unique options for baked goods.

The owners, a Sikh family, gave us their cardamom donut for free. The samosa hand pies were out. I would rate it 4/5. The decor was nice, and the owners were friendly. We were told that the staff is limited, and the owners themselves are thinking of selling this location and hoping to restart it in Greenwood, where they currently live and actually drive down to Bloomington every day. The matcha latte was fine. Everything was fine but not great. The vegan chocolate chip cookie was good, but could've used more chocolate chips.
