A bit off the beaten path but a pleasure to visit. Beautiful lighthouse only a short, easy walk from the parking lot. Breathtaking view.

Little Sable Light stands 107 feet tall over the beach and Lake Michigan. It is located within Silver Lake State park and has a large parking lot available off the road. A short sandy path leads to the light and beach, which was a very popular spot when we visited. The house portion of this light was lost to fire and was never rebuilt, but the tower still stands. You can purchase admittance to climb the tower and see the view from the top. Tickets are purchased at a trailer in the parking lot area and a guide meets you at the light itself. The beach here is a nice soft sand beach and would be a fun place to spend some time and enjoy the waters of Lake Michigan. We enjoyed our time here. It is a wonderful lighthouse and different from many of the others along the coast.

Cool place to visit. For a small fee, you can climb up the staircase to the top of the lighthouse and have a tremendous view of the lakeshore.

    A very photogenic lighthouse.

Bricks weddings and sandblasting The Little Sable Lighthouse was designed by Orlando Poe and constructed in 1874. It's a lovely lighthouse that is remarkably close to the shores of Lake Michigan. To ensure it survived against everything nature and the lake could throw at it the engineers take some exceptional precautions. Over one hundred stout pilings were hammered at least ten feet into the ground and then filled with heavy stones. Then the base of the lighthouse tower was built with rows of bricks over five feet thick. An incredibly strong foundation that isn't going anywhere and can withstand crashing waves and tons of winter ice. The light soars almost 110 feet tall and has 140 steps to the top. The oil that use to power the lighthouse is long gone and the light is now electrified, but the original third order Fresnel Lens is still present and still serves as an active beacon. This makes Little Sable among the rare lighthouses that still has and uses a Fresnel Lens. Most Fresnel have been removed long ago and are in museums or private collections. Little Sable is in a stunning lovely location and is a popular spot for weddings. The lighthouse was originally painted white but in 1977 the paint was sandblasted away making the bricks visible. Really makes the lighthouse unique and beautiful. The lighthouse is open to the public and for a small fee you can climb the cool spiral staircase to get to the top. Unfortunately there are usually long lines and waits. Little Sable is one of the most unique and beautiful lighthouses on Lake Michigan. Built to last, this wonderful lighthouse will continue to entertain people as well as guiding ships for a long time to come.

This beautiful lighthouse was erected in 1874 and has been operating continuously ever since. It's open for tours Friday - Sunday during the summer months. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Sable_Point_Light

Really worth the trip to the top! It is a beautiful view. Winding staircase to the top, watch your head as you climb through two hatches to get to the deck. Staff was friendly and informative on the history of the light house.

LOVED IT!!!! Very courteous staff and great views. Take real money, their WiFi isn't great on the lakeshore. The conservation group that operates this lighthouse, operates four lighthouses. It's a bit queasy going out on top.

Don't bother. Seriously. Don't come here, no matter what you think might be here. I came here,…read morehoping the tower was open for climbing so I could look out over the countryside. The tower is on the National Register of Historic Places, so I decided to venture forth. Hah! Bad move on my part. (The tower in Mountain, Wisconsin is open for touring. Silly me, I thought this one was, too.) First of all, you have to want to come here. It is at the end of a National Forest Road, after branching off of another National Forest Road. What is a National Forest Road? Basically, it's an unimproved ATV trail and during the winter, a snowmobile trail. If you DO decide to venture back here (and judging from the debris left behind by ne'er do wells, several people do come here) don't follow your GPS. Some of the maps show roads that, when you get there, aren't roads at all. One "road" my GPS sent me to was a line of high power transmission towers. Even the Yelp map shows a road that isn't really there. Eventually, I did get here. When you (don't) arrive, you'll find some interpretive signage. One says you shouldn't climb the tower until it's made safe to do so. The message is dated 1988. The first flight of stairs has been removed and barbed wire lines the base of the tower - clearly, the US Forest Service doesn't want you to climb the tower. Judging from the work of local artisans on the outside of the cab, those artisans have more chutzpah than brains and not much talent. Other interpretive signs describe what these towers were used for and frankly describe the absolute isolation the spotters lived in. These towers are seldom used anymore, as airplanes can cover more territory at less cost than manning several towers. It is an anachronism but a piece of history, and it's a real shame the US Forest Service hasn't restored and opened the tower. Maybe someday, they will. Until then, read about towers rather than trying to find this one. Trust me.

Udell Lookout Tower - Considering the barbed wire and no first flight of stairs, the Forest Service recommends you not climb the tower.

Big Sable Point Lighthouse was such a fun experience! The walk out to the lighthouse is about 1.8…read moremiles each way, so just under 4 miles round trip. The trail is a wide, sandy path, so it's not difficult, but it is a pretty long walk and definitely sandy. You walk through part of the campground before heading out toward the lighthouse, and the scenery along the way is really pretty. We weren't there during the hours when the lighthouse was open, and we weren't planning on doing the tour anyway, but I believe it was $8 per person to go inside and climb the lighthouse. Even without going inside, it was absolutely worth making the walk out to see it. I also really enjoyed all of the history around the lighthouse. There were informational boards where you could stop and read about the lighthouse, the history of the area, erosion, the sand dunes, and how the landscape has changed over time. I love when places do this because it makes you appreciate what you're looking at so much more. The lighthouse itself is really cute and makes for such a great destination after the long sandy walk. There are also picnic tables around the area, so you can sit and take a break before making the walk back. If you're visiting Ludington State Park, I definitely think the walk to Big Sable Point Lighthouse is worth doing. Just wear comfortable shoes, expect a lot of sand, bring water, and give yourself plenty of time. It's not a quick little stroll, but getting out there and seeing this historic lighthouse surrounded by Lake Michigan was absolutely worth it!

Beautiful place to visit I can't wait to go back in the summer. It's a very serene place to visit.read more
