Funny story...(kind of)... I went into the Whitefish Liquor Store looking for a bottle of wine for an evening of romance with my wife (we are on vacation). The Liquor Store has a section here with a sign that says "Drink Local" with a handful of wines on display. I pulled down two bottles to look at out of curiosity, and both were from the wine country of Idaho where I am from. So Idaho isn't that far away from this part of Montana, but is it really "Local". It doesn't matter, because I picked up a Merlot from Washington anyway. BTW, they do close promptly, as I was the last customer for the day, and it was exactly 7:00 when I walked out of the store, and they locked the door behind me.

First, what this place is not:…read more 1. It's not a liquor store. Beer and wine only. 2. It's not a tasting room. 3. It's not a growler bar. I've been to a mixture of bottle shops over the years and they vary in their merchandising and options. I could be wrong, but the beer felt like a sideshow to the wine. There was a cooler with cheeses and caviar. Some other pickled items. Things I connect more with vine parties. There was a good variety in types of beers, but not a huge selection. Plenty of local beers. Some Trappist beers. But no Weihenstephaner, my favorite Trappist brews. Service was cordial. The shop was busy. I do, however, still need to throw some shade on that meat department. Just what the heck is going on in there?? I don't think standards are being met. The ground "beef" is, in fact, ground EVERYTHAAAANG, with little to no accuracy in labeling the fat % let alone the TYPE OF ANIMAL, which is kind of a big deal for those of us THAT EAT KOSHER or HALAL, and those of us with a damn sense of taste and value, for that matter! I went to the Kalispell Super1 the other night just to compare. Their ground beef is a rich red color, not anything like the crud they're selling at Whitefish now. And the meat department overall is just not so well kept anymore. And God help you if you happen by while they are cleaning, because you will get hit with a cloud of meaty cleaner solution steam, and the stoned teenager behind the counter DOES NOT care, which seems to be a sentiment from top to bottom in that department. Do better!
