Fresh as can be, cilantro, basil, thyme, parsley, the list goes on. They also have fresh organic cucumbers there for two dollars. They taste awesome. We usually buy a few of these. The staff working at the market is great, friendly, and full of knowledge of the herbs, they also have a few great recipes they share. Stop buy their table. You can get a large variety of wilt-free herbs, along with other seasonal veggies that they may just so happen to be harvesting. The couple who run the stand are sweet and quick, getting you your goodies in no time flat. IMPORTANT! They sell out of some stuff first thing in the morning. All I can say is...WOW! Huge! Impressive! First off...it's on two floors. The first, where you enter is filled with huge bags of rice, over sized ceramic planters and a bazillion bamboo steamers in every size imaginable. Upstairs, well let's just say you could get lots for hours. It took me a half an hour to just check out all the beautiful blue & white traditional Chinese plates and serving dishes, the woks and other Asian cooking paraphernalia. I expected rows and rows ...and then more rows and rows of Chinese, Korean (and to my joy, Japanese) bottles and bags of sauces, spices, noodles, candies...the usual, but in much larger and more varied quantities than the other Asian markets I've visited in Halifax. What I didn't expect was fresh - you heard me - fresh bok choy, plump lemongrass, napa cabbage, kai lan and persimmons, among other fresh Asian vegetables. There were fridges and freezers filled with sticky buns, other Dim Sum dumplings, Chinese pepperoni (I love it) other Asian cured pork. The staff was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. So all those interesting and intriguing packages - like dried lily leaves, were explained, and how and when to use them. I didn't realize, until I was two blocks from home in the North End that this is the retail arm of of Ca Hoa Enterprises, importers and distributors of Asian fare. I pass their trucks every day and never gave it a thought. Things are different now though!

When you walk into the store, the first thing you notice is all the British imported food and snack items.. Reminds me a lot of my childhood and I usually buy something for nostalgia sake. Right beyond that is beverage display case with all sorts of drinks you'd rarely see elsewhere. I especially enjoy their local and import ginger beer selection, as well as Ribena. Beyond that the store is a mixture of exotic cheeses, excellent produce, a deli, health food aisles and the British butchery. This butchery is especially known for its Nova Scotia lamb, which is the best I've bought anywhere around here. The beef steaks are a close second. Needless to say, due to the nature of the products sold here, the prices are exorbitant.. I keep Pete's as a treat to go buy a few luxury food items if I haven't entirely blown my food budget for the month. If my budget hasn't been blown yet, it's sure to be so once I'm done at the Frootique. While many of the items are quite unique, there are many food items that are..items which can be purchased at your regular grocery store for half the price (ie. many of the dairy products). I also think the space the store occupies is much too small... you constantly feel like you're in a traffic jam trying to navigate the narrowly jam packed aisles, and always a hair breadth away from knocking things over.. the store is so cramped, I picture knocking something over as having a domino effect.. dropped a bag of chips?...there goes the whole aisle. The check out staff are fast, friendly and on the ball with keeping registers open. I don't necessarily see this as good customer service, though... since the store is so cramped, if long lines were to form then customers in line to pay would take up half the retail space (I've seen this happen here more than once). I definitely recommend this place, though, even if just to window shop. You might discover something new on every visit.
