We did the 2 hour tour and went up the river. Very calm and peaceful paddle. Staff were very friendly. The Feel free kayaks were pretty comfortable. We did the open ones. Next time I'd try out going the other direction towards the ocean to see if we could catch any sea creatures!

I reserved a couple of closed-deck kayaks for my wife and cousin this past weekend, and added on the 15-minute paddle stroke refresher course, all of which was east to do online ahead of time. The owners were both really professional and skilled at teaching, and got the less-experienced kayakers' forward stroke good enough to paddle all day without pain and make some solid distance enjoyably. Unfortunately I had to launch my own kayak from a public launch a little ways down the road, but that worked out fine. Their kayaks, paddles, and pfds were all in great shape, and we had a lovely day paddling through the harbor and as far up the quiet, scenic, wildlife-rich Noyo River as we could navigate--we got eyed by curious seals, watched kingfishers and cormorants skimming through the air, saw deer come down to the edge to drink, and watched cavorting otters. I can't wait to go back for another glorious day on the water, and take a more challenging skills lesson when I can. Care and Jeff really love the sport and the place they live, and it shows.

The Mendocino coast offers several kayaking options, including sea tours, river float trips and (in season) river whitewater trips. I think a tour of the sea caves or coastline usually will be more interesting than the river tours, but my seven year old son has never kayaked before, so I chose a less complicated river float trip. We took a Noyo River tour from Liquid Fusion kayaking. This proved to be an excellent choice for three reasons. First, the tour was easy paddling even for novices. Second, we were the only customers on a Wednesday morning tour, so we customized the trip to our specific interests. The tour wasn't the cheapest, but having a private session for 90 minutes turned out to be an excellent value. Third, the proprietor Cate is a former schoolteacher, so she did a great job engaging my son. We kayaked from Dolphin Isle harbor down to the main harbor and back on our 90 minute tour. Along the way, we saw a couple seals in the river, many birds (osprey, kingfisher, woodpecker, ducks, swallows and a beautiful Great Blue Heron) and evidence of river otters (but no otters themselves). My son initially loved the opportunity to paddle, but eventually he got distracted by the surprisingly fascinating (to him) floating seaweed in the river. My son ranked the kayaking as one of our trip highlights. It was a great way to whet his appetite for more.

The staff and equipment were top notch! Wonderful non-rushed explanation of the river. Went away from the busy area and were rewarded with views of nature and animals including deer, seals, and birds

Both the PFDs and the shuttle vans could use some updating, however. The canoe itself was fine, as were the oars. The river route was very peaceful, with the exception of some choppy water occasionally, with some rocks we had to maneuver around. We did get stuck in a shallow section, but that was on us for not realizing how shallow it was. The take-out was fine, if a little muddy. Overall a good experience.

What if one in your group dips out of the plans. Then you have either paid for person and you're out that money or you have an extra ticket that you may or may not use. Accept a deposit at the time of reservation but the whole thing is a little ridiculous. Pre-covid, they passed out flyers on the shuttle out to the river. If you returned the flyer when you returned, you'd get a free scoop of ice cream. Our family used to love that. We'd still buy more ice cream but after paddling all afternoon, we'd love to sit and relax with our ice cream before loading everything back up and talk about the neat stuff that we seen. This by no means is their fault. I just hope they keep it in mind and bring it back in some way. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 for two reasons. The shuttle that we rode in sounded and felt like it could use some maintenance and because the 2 rental kayaks we rented for our kids-both had tons of pieces of styrofoam, pieces of tree, and spiders in them. You don't have to spray them out after every use but least spray out the kayaks before using them each season.

Just outside not only the city limits of Johnstown, but the county limits of Cambria County you…read morewill come across Greenhouse Park. Technically located in Somerset County in what is Conemaugh Township you will come across this little haven. While driving along 403 you may not notice that this place even exists, especially in the spring/summer months as a majority of it is blocked by the ample foliage. If you do happen to catch a glimpse of this as you drive by you might be able to get a general idea of what this place can and has been used for. But I suggest taking your time to stop in here and enjoy what there is to offer here. One thing that you will notice is that there a pavilions that are sporadically spaced out through the grounds. These can be rented for parties, get-togethers, special events, etc. Most of these have an accompanying fire pit to use at your disposal. Rates for these can be found on the township website. Also available is a playground area where smaller children can get their exercise. The playground area is more of a chutes and ladders type of area as there are no swings or things of that like. What is a huge draw here is the fact that when they decided to spruce up this space they decided to construct rapids in Stonycreek River. Definite draw for kayakers and the like. It's a beautiful setting with these formations they made, many family/prom/graduation pictures have been taken of people standing on one of the rocks. This park also hosts many events throughout the year whether it be for a local boy scout troop, family fun day or Thunder in the Valley (which you have to 21+ to even step foot on grounds for). It's a great place just to walk as well. *Sand volleyball court available, changing areas if you choose to play in the rapids, bathrooms on ground. ******No pets, so don't bring your four-legged friend. You will be fined if you do so.******
