Bear Glacier kayaking was so fun -our guide Nick was super helpful and very chill. Piper is a great captain. Make sure you ask for your photos before you leave!

    Kayaking bear glacier

We absolutely loved the kayaking tour in Seward, Alaska, with Liquid Adventures. I honestly debated whether we should do their other option: stand up paddle-boarding. But something told me this probably wasn't a good idea. Last time we did this activity, SOMEONE ended up in the water. And let's just say, it's probably a much easier plunge in Santa Barbara than in the ice-cold waters of Alaska! The kayak tour in front of Bear Glacier was a major highlight. Curious seals swam up to our kayaks to check us out. Plus, we even saw a massive piece of ice break off the top of an iceberg and float away. It was like we were in our own nature documentary! The 3.5 hour trip is definitely a workout. Though, this includes a 45-minute ride to and from the kayaking site (so you won't be paddling the entire time). Or you can just get the back seat of the tandem kayak and your partner won't ever know if you're paddling or not! Cost of the Bear Glacier kayaking adventure is $299 per person.

Kayaking past blue icebergs in the glacial lagoon

We used Liquid Adventures for their kayaking tour through the blue icebergs of the Bear Glacier glacial lagoon, and it was incredible! The weather was perfect (cloudy/overcast), and that's not something Liquid Adventures can control... what they did have control over were the guides and jetboat captain, who all did a great job, from gearing us up to teaching us about the safety protocols, to deftly navigating between chunks of ice in the river, to pacing the day just right. Paddling around the ice of the glacial lagoon is a mesmerizing, surreal, otherworldly experience that you are not likely to find very many places in the world. Peaceful and jaw-droppingly beautiful... though parts of the jetboat ride were a bit more rough and adrenaline-pumping! We even got a bit of a scenic nature cruise through the Kenai fjords on the way there, stopping occasionally to observe puffins, eagles, a sea otter, and even a humpback whale! (We also encountered cute seals that followed us around the lagoon, popping their heads out to watch us with curiosity.)

    More cool ice

BEAR GLACIER KAYAK ALL DAY GO!! 2023 There is more ice than the senior guide in the store, who has been there twelve years, has ever seen in the lagoon. It is amazing to see icebergs calving, then rolling and flipping. You will be able to touch the small pieces floating, but the 130' tall icebergs can flip you too so stay a safe distance away from the big ones! Seriously, go do this. The company was awesome too. We booked a helicopter return with jet boat to the lagoon where you kayak. Well, remember all that ice? They can't get near the inlet anymore with the jet boat, on July 1. The company didn't charge us any extra to helicopter both ways!! Stand up move. We got a lot of paddling thru something that resembles an abstract art gallery with floating sculptures. Mikey, our guide, was a very hard worker and sweet guy who took great care of our group of six. Logistics: they provide dry suits and as long as you're in decent shape, six hours is do-able, we took a couple breaks on land for lunch and pit stops. And you can always just float. Tandem kayaks only I think, tho that may be due to conditions.

Glacier kayak trip was really fun!!! We really got to see the glacier crack and roll. The hot chocolate we were offered at the middle if the trip was a cherry on top.

We were more than twice far away from glacier than other companies' kayaking tours.

I took Aialik Glacier kayaking tour on August 28, 2022. I do NOT recommend to this tour if you want to see the Aialik Glacier. Firstly, this tour does not get anywhere close to the Aialik Glacier. They stop very, very far away from it. You can still see the glacier at a distance but cannot really experience it. Meanwhile, all other kayaking tours from other companies went less than half the distance to the glacier and enjoyed the ice falling show in the front row. I repeatedly pointed out that other tours were much closer and expressed my wish to get closer, but our tour guide didn't budge. He said their safety standard was 0.5 miles from the glacier. But I found out later, from my GPS log and satellite image, that we were roughly 1.2 miles away. Secondly, this tour doesn't spend enough time to see the glacier. While all other kayaks were still watching the glacier, our guide instructed us to head back to the beach where the water taxi dropped us off, because "we don't have enough time". Since our group members were all young and kayaking fast, I pointed out that we could leave after other kayaks started going back and still beat them. But our tour guide didn't budge. He said that we needed to arrive at the beach at least 30 min before departure time. I had no choice but to follow his order. Then, it got worse. He diverted us to an island between the glacier and the boat docking beach, and showed us an empty eagle nest, which was just a bunch of twigs in a tree, and a cave, which was just a small cavity in rock wall. It was insult to injury. Instead of taking a detour and seeing those, we could have stayed at the glacier longer. After all, we arrived at the boat docking beach 45 minutes before departure time. We put away our kayaks and gears in 20 minutes. For the rest of 25 minutes, we just watched other tours' kayaks coming back to the beach. We could have easily stayed at the glacier 30 minutes longer if we didn't drop by the island and didn't try to beat other tours. To be fair, there were a couple of things I liked about this tour. It was $30 cheaper than other companies' similar tours. Also, their tour did NOT include lunch. I liked it because I have dietary restrictions and often cannot eat standard tour lunch.

My husband went out for a 3hr tour and had the best time. Joann was informative, kind and we loved having her as our tour guide. There were only 4 other people on our boat, which provided more of a intimate experience. We saw seals, sea otters, sea lions, 9 eagles, a mountain goat, and porpoises! The scenery was magnificent and it was an experience we will never forget.

    Fun on the water

Used these guys for a guided kayak trip around Resurrection Bay. It was a challenging outing but so fun. Our guide was great - he took care of everything we needed. The boats and equipment were excellent. We had a great lunch and plenty of time to hike and explore along the way. It was a perfect day out on the water.

    Kayaking Bear Glacier Lagoon

We did a half day Bear Glacier kayaking tour. The day began with getting fitted for dry suits and all the necessary gear. Then we drove to the harbor and took a fun little jetboat to Bear Glacier. We had seen Bear Glacier from afar on a catamaran tour the previous day and it just looked like a little, mostly green mountain with a little bit of snow on the slope. We had no idea what beauty was in store for us once we got around into the lagoon. The area was incredibly serene and picturesque with icebergs of all shapes, sizes and shades of white and blue. Our guide cautiously navigated us around the lagoon, ensuring that we got great looks at everything, while constantly remaining safe. We are beginner kayakers, but did not have any trouble keeping up or navigating around. Alaska Tour and Travel had recommended this trip to us and I am so glad that they did. I highly recommend it to anyone who visits the Seward area. Four stars only because the check in process was a bit confusing and the girl doing check in was not very friendly. However, once we got paired with our guide, everything was great.

We saw many animals including whales, orcas, sea otters, sea lions, different birds including puffins, bald eagles, etc. We went close to glaciers. The captain was very knowledgeable. The 6-hour cruise was memorable! For the most part the waters were calm; there were certain areas that were rough. Even then, we were told that the water was calmest when we visited on that day in June. For some who have have motion sickness, bringing a medication can be helpful (though I think they also sell some on board) though we did not need any. As can be the case in the later season, it was raining nearly the entire time we were on the cruise. But we had come prepared with rain gear, and while it would've been nice if it had been more sunny and less foggy, we still had an incredible time. We got to see some glaciers, including the Harding Icefield - which was pretty cool since we hiked up to it the following day from another direction. So much wildlife to see - orcas, puffins, seals, bald eagles... Even though the weather wasn't the best, we still had great animal sightings. All the staff were so incredibly kind and friendly. The tour included lunch. Felt like the lunch was the weakest link of the tour - food could've been a bit better - but all things considered, I wasn't going on the cruise for the food. Towards the end of the cruise, they were able to get some of the glacier ice into the boat and had glacier ice margaritas for sale. Really good price - I believe they were $7 each. The margarita was good, but the ice was incredible. Overall, it was a fantastic experience exploring this portion of the national park. Would highly recommend!

"Where Mountains, Ice, and Ocean Meet"…read more Exploring this National Park was a nice addition to my trip to Alaska. I came here to do volunteer work. In the evenings, we mostly fished in the Kenai River. After finishing up our work, my group planned two fun days at the end of the week. One day we chartered a boat in Homer to Halibut fish and the other we visited Seward and got to see the Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park. Kenai Fjords National Park is massive. It is the fifth most-visited park in Alaska and is the closest national park to Anchorage. The park was established in 1980 and encompasses over 600,000 acres outside of the town of Seward. Snow and ice cover 50 percent of the park with the Harding Icefield stretching over 700 square miles. The park's headquarters and visitor center is located in Seward. The nice thing about Kenai Fjords National Park is that it provides both leisurely and adventurous activities for visitors. Activities include kayaking, boat tours, camping, fishing, biking, hiking, cross-country skiing, dog sledding and mountaineering. Various companies offer tours that are guided by National Park Rangers. In addition to seeing the beautiful scenery up close, you can also see both land and marine wildlife. Seward is also a destination for cruise ships and provides passengers from the ships with tours of the park. Kenai Fjords National Park lies on the southeastern side of the Kenai Peninsula and can be reached from Seward. The most significant fjords include Aialik Bay, Harris Bay, McCarty Fjord and Nuka Bay. Most of the interior of the park is covered by the Harding Icefield. A cool thing for me was that I was doing work at an airport when I was here in Alaska. Because my work was volunteer, one of the pilots offered to take some of us up in a plane to see Alaska from above as an appreciation for the work that we were doing. We flew over the Harding Icefield and got to see how massive is it. It was such an awesome experience. Another way to see the Icefield up close is to hike on the Harding Icefield Trail. Kenai Fjords National Park is made up of three main areas - the Exit Glacier, Harding Icefield and the coastline. The Exit Glacier is the easiest section of the park to reach. I stopped by the visitor center in Seward first before seeing the glacier. It is a nice place to visit and to learn about the park. There are park rangers on hand to answer questions and a gift shop. We then headed over to the Exit Glacier. It is the only destination in Kenai Fjords National Park that is accessible by land. They have a small nature center that you can visit before heading out on the trail to the glacier. The Exit Glacier hike is the best way to see this this glacier up close. Sadly, it has shrunk considerably due to climate change. They have signs showing where the glacier once stood by year. Park scientists continue to monitor and record the glacier's accelerating recession. At some point, you won't be able to see the glacier anymore from the overlook trail. I really enjoyed my time visiting this park. Getting a chance to fly over the Harding Icefield was an amazing experience for me. Then checking out the Exit Glacier later in the week really made me appreciate how beautiful this park is. I hope someday I can return here and hike on Harding Icefield Trail to get up and close to it.

To start, they go over the typical safety protocols to mitigate chances of issues that would occur. Then you embark on a roughly two hour ride to the kayaking destination.
