We unofficially nicknamed this place "Dirtface Park" but it's really a great playground, nestled in…read morethe midst of the rows of shabby apartment buildings by Dee Road and Emerson (north of Ballard & just south of Golf) in unincorporated Maine Township. It's just a few minutes from Golf-Mill but not well-known except to the locals. This is probably the most ethnically diverse park in my area, with lots of Indian, Middle Eastern, Hispanic and Eastern European kids from the area. Best of all, it has the one of the most elaborate playground setups I've seen in the NW burbs. So why the name? Well, when my 3-year old went to this park last year, he played and loved it for only a few minutes before he fell off a plaform and landed in a mound of wood chips. Dirt and tears smeared his face and itty-bitty woodchips went into his nose and mouth. The sad sight he was, we rushed him home to comfort him and give him a bath. He refused to play there again and we avoided it for a year, while it earned the name of "Dirtface Park". After a 1-year hiatus, I took him back a few weeks ago and he just got out of the car, tripped on the pavement and hurt his knee before ever reaching the park! Is it cursed? After that fall, he vowed "Never again!" to go back to this park, ever... Well, maybe not. The park is safe in my opinion and my son was a victim of unusual bad luck here. We took him back this past weekend and he got to play for a long time without any tragic injury or a faceful of dirt. My 1-year old crawled around and loved it too. The playground has a short tunnel made of coated wire mesh that looks like a cage and makes for great fun. It also has a series of square stepping blocks for climbing up to the slide, almost reminiscent of the old Qbert video game. I have not seen that done anywhere else. Besides the playground, there's tennis courts, and 2 sand volleyball courts which double as a giant sandbox when not in use. Lots of trees and shade around the play area to sit while you watch the kids playing.

The class is…read morean amazing value for the money -- and to me a surprising find for a small municipal park district. You or your child can learn ballet steps, and proper posture and decorum, while having age appropriate fun and stimulation. A small but exciting portion of each class is dedicated to tap. Ms. Sandria, who enjoys both dance and working with people, puts together a creative routine, starting from day one, building on each new skill and resulting in a gratifying show at the end of the "semester". She is also incredibly accommodating, and presented a "mothers-only" dress rehearsal in addition to the annual public recital. No matter where you start from, you'll find these classes interesting, good exercise, and you really can't beat the prices. The wife and I dropped in for the first time to check the place out and to get in our fitness steps. It was very nice to use the free, uncrowded, and comfortable walking track in the Athletic Field space. The weekday walking hours are 6am-4pm, except Wednesday when it is 8am-4pm. The walking track encircles an indoor soccer field. There are also free lockers for the storage of your personal items. At the risk of ruining things with this review lol, this place is a hidden gem for us! As I was looking around at the historical info ads about this long standing facility, I took a photo of the past Olympians from this ice center. A voice out of nowhere said "make sure to get a photo of the guy in red". The guy in red in the ad photo was David Santee, a two time (1976 and 1980) USA Olympian and sure enough the voice out of nowhere belonged to none other than David Santee himself lol! You can check the photo - he's not a fake and he is a retired director of this facility and also currently a skating coach here. Pretty cool coincidental run-in and David is a very loyal Park Ridge native, hooray! Besides the Athletic Field, there is the Ice Arena which houses a brand new studio rink for their figure skating and hockey programs. Big thumbs up for this new community asset and congratulations to the Park Ridge Park District on the completion of their very successful rebuild project.

As I write this review for what's currently listed on Yelp as Oakton Ice Arena (until the updates I submitted are approved, anyway), it's actually a completely new facility. That's not hyperbole--the place was rebuilt from the ground up. I never visited the old arena, but have been to the new one several times since I live nearby and we also attended the grand opening of the new facility (which opened in August 2025). In addition to the main ice rink, they have a studio rink which is a fraction of the size, as well as an indoor athletic field. There's an indoor walking track that forms the perimeter of the athletic field, and though they open at 9 a.m., the walking track opens at 6 and is free of charge to use. They have a nice concessions area, which includes an outdoor patio in the warm weather months. As a park district facility, they have a variety of events and classes and you can also rent space in the building for your own events. There's classes for all ages; I signed my daughter up for baseball (the only girl!) and we'll try soccer in a few weeks. I'm also curious about the adult ice skating classes, and I'll definitely be looking into the children's ice skating when she's old enough to enroll. They have adult leagues for broom ball, volleyball, ice bocce, basketball.... The instructors are top-notch as well. I believe the facility has a golf range that will be opening in spring or summer 2026. There's a lot of parking here. I haven't ever seen it near full. They have quite a few electronic vehicle spots with chargers; possibly too many tbh but I'm probably misremembering how many there are. The park is surrounded by residential streets and except for a small parking lot near the swimming pool, it's all otherwise street parking for visitors, so it can get crowded if you're not a slight bit early for an event. They do also have a swimming pool as mentioned, 3 tennis courts, and a field house. Great asset for Glenview families and activities!

The coaches are very diligent with safety and making sure all kids are safe and comfortable, many are saying that it is not a clean enviroment. The gym is clean, its simply just an old building. Theres so many different areas in the gym including rope swings, and a rockwall in the foam pit. I went here when I was younger and I absolutely loved it. Theres large viewing areas in the lobby for the parents to watch their kids throuhg windows on the first and second floors. Kurt was very diligent with giving me corrections and taught me so much about gymnastics. I am forever greatful for American Academy and all that they taught me!
