The caskets are made of hardwood and fulfilled the desire to stay as close to nature as my mom had described back in the Caribbean. The website allowed me to see such a serene atmosphere where the monks create the caskets as their stewardship and as their trade. The caskets are blessed before being shipped out and a memorial tree is planted in that person's name! Aside from that beautiful thought, a removal wooden cross, inset into the cover can be removed, as a keepsake and other crosses are included and may be ordered to give to others. The top cover of the casket can be inscribed and a biblical verse added. Everyone remarked at the physical beauty of these caskets, but also at the very spiritual dimensions that made this inevitable episode that much more consoling and serene, I pre-ordered mine too.

I do not know of another funeral director in the region who is this forthright and transparent. He has things structured so you get what you need without inflating the charges with things not essential. We are extremely pleased at how painless he made taking care of things. He discussed with us what had to happen and who was responsible. He did most of the things needed for us. We got thru the process in a matter of days without feeling pushed but feeling cared for in a way that made the process very simple and comforting. We highly recommend him and know you will not be disappointed by his assistance. There are things that can make this very difficult time very trying and if you have Jason help he will see that everything is taken care of in a timely and appropriate manner. Grandpa and Grandma were both in good hands there. The funeral home is family owned, and all the staff there were very caring. They are all very responsive to all of our needs, even after the services has ended. The funeral home facilities are modern and quite comfortable for family members, and easily accessible with everything being on one floor. I would have no reservations at all about recommending Leonard to others. The funeral home is the only one in the area that has a crematory on site, so for those of us who desire that option when our time comes having a funeral home that can take care of cremation on site and not having to send remains to a third party is a big plus.

Have been to funerals here and it has always been a nice (as it can be in these situations) My father recently passed away and we started working with another funeral home in which we had a poor experience. We called Leonard and they were able to meet with us the right away, took care of everything as far as transporting, and walked us through everything at our own pace. They gave us all the time we needed while setting up all the arrangements. Nice space for the family to bring food, kids to hang out, and allow family a break when needed. Allowed us to bring what ever we wanted as far as pictures, keep sakes, fishing poles, had a tv to play a picture slide show. Allowed us to have our private time but was available if needed during the viewing. They gave us all the time we needed, was very respectful of our family member and of everyone grieving, communicated well, and took care of everything. Even offered to drop off the flowers after everything was done. Made us feel like family. I hope I don't have to use their services for a long time again, but will definitely work with them when the time comes.

The trip is short but the view from the top of the bluff is will worth the few bucks. The ride is a cable car / funicular and is "the world's steepest, shortest scenic railway." It was built so a local business man could get home faster during his lunch break and thus have more time to enjoy his break and take a longer nap. It is seasonal, I think April - November. And is cash only! Very unique and gimmicky but well worth a visit.

Raising or lowering eight passengers at a time a vertical height of 189'. It began operation in 1882. Built to save its owner precious time going to & from work. After a couple of fires, it's been rebuilt on the original footprint, steel cables replacing the ropes that used to raise or lower the cars. At the top you have a beautiful views & can actually see three states, Illinois, Wisconsin & Iowa. When it first opened to the public it was five cents a ride. When we visited, it was $4.00 a person & cash only. A very unique ride, one that should not be missed.

You can visit the following places to enjoy birding, hiking, dog-walking, effigy mounds, and picnicking: Buehler Preserve, Casper Bluff, and Keough Effigy Mounds in Galena, Schurmeier Teaching Forest in Elizabeth, and Wapelle Land and Water Reserve. Another restoration is in process at Gateway Park in Galena which boasts beautiful views or downtown Galena. Also, if you're visiting Galena, make sure to visit and hike Horseshoe Mound, which has commanding views of Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa. JDCF also has a monthly narrated tour of Horseshoe, and a number of other educational programs for anyone who wants to attend. Great family events, too like picnics and nature tours for kids. You can learn a lot about the whole Driftless Area from their programs and publications, too. They are funded completely by memberships and grants. One incredible asset to Galena and other communities in this northwest corner of Illinois.
