There's live music, wine, beer, food and of course art, in tons of mediums! The studio spaces run from teeny tiny to generous and straight up huge! Some spaces are ideal for woodworking and even metalworks while others (upstairs) are quieter and better suited for painters, sculptors and so on. If I could get back into painting again, I'd definitely want to rent a studio here. Not only does the art community seem really tight knit in Georgetown, it's also just a really peaceful and creative space to hang out.

I am always looking for low cost, less formal ways to learn about places I either live in or visit…read moreand have done many free tours both in Seattle and while traveling. I learned about this tour from a friend and I think it's fairly new. At any rate, interesting tour. Not your typical here's the city and these are some of the landmarks and here are some fun facts. The difference is this tour was focused around the public art that can be seen everyday along the streets and sidewalks, built into the infrastructure, in the form of manhole covers or hatches as they are referred to. The folks conducting the tour included information of the various artistic manhole covers, combining it with first hand information from the artists and discussed the history of the work and how it fits into the identity of Seattle. They also provide information on the history of the city and how Seattle became the city you see as you take the tour. Pretty neat concept exploring aspects of the city that folks often take for granted as they pass by. Another fun fact about this tour is that it evolved out of an art project. I thought that was particularly interesting. Some of the prints, etc are pretty cool and again not what you would typically expect or encounter from one of these free tours. I'd recommend this tour to anybody to who wants to learn more about the history of Seattle, who appreciates public art or art in general and who has a free hour or so on a Saturday morning.

Almost every piece featured the Seattle sky line, the space needle or one of their stadiums. Each work was so beautiful and I loved seeing all the local artists' work. I didn't think that the gallery would be as large as it was inside. From the outside it looks like it'd be a tiny closet. But inside the space really opened up. I don't know how anyone parks around here but I thought I'd stop in just on a whim since we were in the area. I didn't want to take any photos of the work inside of the gallery or the space itself. I hadn't had a chance to ask the gallery associate and I didn't want to upset or offend anyone as they were speaking with a group of other women who'd stopped in. I'll be back next time and maybe then I can get more info on the works that caught my eye. I really hope to stop in again too because I saw some pieces that I think my hubby would really like. I know how homesick he can get, especially because his entire family lives in Seattle. So, a nice piece in our TV room might make him feel a bit more at home, or like he has a piece of home here with us at our home.

Winston Wachter also have a gallery space in New York. They have 6 week long exhibitions of contemporary art. I love that it changes with just enough time for people to truly enjoy and marinate in the art. I went in last night to see Piper O'Neil and Robin Layton's work. My friend and I were the only ones at the gallery (my friend had a hard time finding the door, it's the one that's facing the main road; you just have to push the door in). Not only does the gallery exhibit some of the greatest artists of our time but it's also completely free. We were gushing about how envious we were of the Robin Layton's ability to capture so much in one picture and how she was able to pursue her passions. We were about to head out but I wanted to spend more time with a specific photo and then seconds later, Robin Layton introduced herself. It was truly surreal; I was fangirling so hard (she was voted top 8 photographers by LIFE magazine). They have two main exhibit rooms but if you decide to explore further, they also have smaller rooms with magnificent art pieces. For example, my friend really wanted to see Christopher Boffoli's artworks that Winston Wachter exhibited last month. When we went exploring, we found 3 Christopher Boffoli pieces hidden away in the corner. They have a receptionist type of desk in the front and the girl there can answer any questions you have. They also have a few books for sale as well as guest log where you can sign up for their emails. The whole space, the lighting, the "ART" sign outside, everything about this place is amazing.

Art is subjective, and thus the appeal of any show will depend on you, your current tastes, your current mood, etc., but Winston Wachter regularly has shows that genuinely interest and excite me, by terrific contemporary artists working throughout the pop-art to fine-art gradient. It's a very walkable art walk too (although some true gems are in the farthest flung reaches of the neighborhood, like Building C). Editorial aside: Is it just me or does there seem to be steadily fewer and fewer art galleries in Ballard? Not sure if that's just my perception or if it's the truth, Ruth. If it's true, that's a VERY bad sign for a neighborhood that is growing like a weed and gentrifying like a, uh, gentrified weed. This would be a solid 4-star review, but I must ding the Art Walk organizers a point because of the website at http://ballardartwalk.blogspot.com/. First of all, don't even bother looking at it on a laptop or desktop--it's a cluttered attic of a website that has definitely gone mobile only. The mobile version laundry-lists some openings but doesn't really inspire much excitement. Plus, there are certainly participating places that are open and showing art but are left off of the art walk map assembled by the Ballard Chamber o' Commerce...oh, and as of July, they still were posting the map for April through June. Come on folks, this shouldn't be that hard!
