Having never been to the races before, I didn't know what to expect. Would I be rolling in pound notes after picking the winning horse? Would I be drowning in champagne after putting my house up on the loser?
What we got was a nice day out - dressed up, looking smart, having a flutter.
It wasn't quite the glamorous affair I'd had in mind. We'd booked in for a Champagne Afternoon Tea and Blues package. The staff were nice and friendly. The champagne was ice cold. The afternoon tea we VERY mediocre and took ages to arrive.
Sadly the biggest let down was the crowd. Lovely as everyone was, it wasn't exactly high rollers and the upper crust. It was every day folk like me, wearing nice clothes and having a gamble. Hen parties, groups of mates. All very nice, but just not quite what I was hoping.
