Beth's Bake Shoppe was such a cute surprise! It's tucked into a pretty unassuming strip mall, so I…read morehad no idea it was going to be as adorable as it was inside. It seems to be part bakery where you can order beautiful wedding and special occasion cakes, part tea room where you can sit down for lunch, and then there's an entire area that gave me Hallmark gift shop vibes. I didn't get a chance to explore that section, but it looked super cute. Chrissy was my server, and I think there may have only been one other server working during the lunch rush, but she was turning and burning and doing a wonderful job. I ordered the crab Rangoon soup of the day and a chicken salad sandwich with extra onions, plain kettle chips, and their mango unsweetened tea. That tea was DELICIOUS, and I don't even like tea! The chicken salad sandwich on the croissant was delicious too, and honestly I was being greedy because I wanted to try even more stuff. They also brought out the cutest little complimentary sweet that reminded me of an Italian wedding cake cookie without the actual cookie part, almost like a little bite of icing, and it was delicious. The crab Rangoon soup was probably the only thing that didn't quite hit the mark for me. I finished it and it was perfectly fine, but I don't know why I didn't realize "crab" in crab Rangoon soup in Springfield, Missouri was probably going to mean imitation crab. I was also expecting a creamier broth with more of that sweet-savory, cream cheese and chive flavor I associate with crab Rangoon. This was a thinner creamy broth and tasted more like an imitation crab chowder to me. I'd give the soup itself about 3.5/5 because it was actually a pretty good imitation crab chowder, it just didn't taste like crab Rangoon to me. Before I left, I grabbed an ooey gooey butter pecan cookie and a chocolate chip cookie to go because there was absolutely no way I was walking past that bakery case twice and leaving empty-handed. Overall, such a charming little find and exactly the kind of locally owned lunch spot I love stumbling across when I'm traveling for work. I'd definitely come back!

My first experience with The Sweet Spot was incredibly disappointing. I chose them despite the…read morelack of reviews because they were one of the few bakeries that I could find that baked gluten free cake. First, I was told the cake would be ready for pickup when they opened at 11am. When I got there, the cake had yet to be iced because it was still cooling. I was told another 30 min was needed. I couldn't come back until 2pm when I was presented a cake that looked like I had made it and decorated it (not a good thing) and had obviously been iced when still warm as the icing had melted down the sides of the cake. To make matters worse, after handing out the first slices of cake, we discovered that the middle of the cake had a layer of still raw batter. I'm rating 2 stars instead of 1 because the flavor of the cake was quite yummy, especially for a gluten cake. Not yummy enough, however to overcome the presentation and delay. I have pictures to prove the raw batter and poor decorating but not sure how to add them to this post.
