Winter rains had really done a number on the roads in the greater area, and after several detours on backroads and byways, we found ourselves in sleepy little Groveland. After a couple of days at the park with the wifenkids, we decided to take a day and just mill around the small community of Groveland. A trip to the park, a meal and a couple of beers in what is touted as the oldest bar in California (fodder for another review), and some light window shopping pretty much covered the town. As we got ready to head back to our rented house, we spotted the Helping Hands Thrift Store; never one to pass up the opportunity to thumb through a second hand store, we walked in and were actually pleasantly surprised! A large selection of various clothing, bric-a-brac, novelties, cards, and other assorted stuff was there for the taking, severely marked down to next-to-nothing prices. After scoffing at a $45 Yosemite T-shirt at the park, I found a practically brand new Yosemite T-shirt--in my size-- for 50 cents! How do you not buy a 50 cent t-shirt??? I found three t-shirts in all, including two that were decidedly local and obscure... perfect for wearing to the gym, or to the pier for fishing, I suppose... and walked with all three for under $2. I did pass on the Wham! music video DVD, but I'm sure some lucky 80s junkie will find it and treasure it. Can't imagine when I'll be back to Groveland, but if I am, this thrift shop can COUNT on my business again :)

I had just come from Sierra Nevada Adventure Co. where the clerk was useless also. The locals used to keep businesses going during the off season, now it's allll about the tourists. I went to Swensens Shoes in Jackson and bought 2 pairs of shoes, nice selection, one was on sale, very nice layout and friendly clerk. They also have shoe repair available. Will be shopping there from now on. Cross post of my other BAD experience down the street. (Went into store looking for sandals or water shoes about a week and a half ago. The clerk was on the phone having a grand time. First thing she said after my asking about shoes was 'we don't have any of those in women's'. I said, that they didn't have to be women's. She proceeded to tell her friend that 'she'd be right back' and set the phone down. She walked over to one pair and pointed them out. I was informed that their store policy does not refund customers back to the original payment method and instead refunds are issued by mailed check within about 14 days. It has now been almost six months and I still have not received my refund. I have called the store numerous times to follow up and each time staff members tell me that only the store manager/owner can assist me. My calls are then transferred to voicemail, but none of my messages have ever been returned. Extremely disappointed with the lack of communication, customer service, and failure to issue a refund that should have been resolved months ago. Customers should not have to repeatedly chase down a business for money they are owed.

One of my more recent appointments was to a Podiatry specialist where they setup an appointment for me at Shoes That Fit for customs orthotics and Shoes. My first appointment for my personal fitting was on a Saturday morning. Once I arrived I was greeted and taken to a sitting area in front of a foot scanning machine. I was asked a few questions and then placed my feet on the machine to be scanned. After the scanning process was done, and I was then asked by the female assistant what type of shoe I was looking for; i.e. standard every day, dress/casual, or running. I told them something like my New Balance 998's that I was wearing st the time of my visit. So the lady helping me decided to find a New Balance they had in stock that could work. Once all of that was taken care I was then given another follow up appointment, to try the fit of the new custom orthotics and shoes. At my follow up appt I then tried on my new shoes with the custom orthotics. Once I had both pair on the lady helping me had me walk around the store with them on to see how they felt, because if they didn't feel right I could get the orthotics fix and tried on again. Everything felt fine though so I took my new shoes home after thst fit. Overall: Staff was very professional and extremely helpful, and I left with ni issues with my new shoe or custom orthotics.
