The craved wood staircases, the built for the ages book coves, and the wooden floors that seem to speak. But the library has two other wonderful surprises. The up-to-date collection of books, magazines, and other publications. The locals must love this place as I, a visitor, immediately loved it. Last but not least is the Art collection. The Library itself has several well-placed paintings that blend in with the furniture and neighboring books. The separate Art collection, in a separate climate-controlled room, was a wonderful well-thought-out collection of masterpieces. As a frequent art museum visitor, especially in my hometown of Houston Texas, I was surprised to find the same artist's work here in St Johnsbury as in the art museum in the 4th largest city, especially in the U.S. The Athenarum's stated mission "is to promote life-long learning through art, literature and information services, and to preserve its National Historic Landmark building, art collection, and furnishings." So if your interested in social sciences, cooking, anything academic your out of luck. The children's section is decent, but that's about it. It's not a welcoming space. I'm perplexed that the library is so disappointing. Hanover has money. This is a small town, so the library is an important part of the community. The fact the main library is the same level as a branch, not a decent one, is just depressing. Go to Lebanon if you want a nice library.

Objectively, Baker Berry limits DVD loans to 3 days & 3 discs. The Howe lets patrons take out 8 DVDs for 2 weeks! Also, Baker Berry forces people to renew DVDs in person whereas Howe items can be renewed by phone as long as no one else put a hold on the same selection. The library is clean & neat. Great views from the windows. Purchase snacks & drinks to enjoy in the little cafe area. Afterwards, sit on a couch in front of a real fireplace in the quiet room. Staff is friendly & extremely helpful. Wifi connectivity is available throughout library. No login required -- Connect to Howe Wireless1 *LIBRARY HOURS* Monday - Thursday: 10am - 8pm Friday: 10am - 6pm Saturday: 10am - 5pm Sunday (mid-September to mid-May): 1pm -5pm Non-residents are subject to $115.00 charges per year for an individual or family account. $ 50.00 for three months for an individual or family $ 80.00 per year for senior citizens Non-resident cards provide all library services free of charge except interlibrary loans. There are multiple study area: a traditional dark oak room with chandeliers, a more modern and open study area with lots of light, and a basement area with a large mural. They also have a side room that's in memory of Dr. Seuss, who was an alumni at Dartmouth.

When we walked into the library we approached the front desk and asked where in the library would be the best place for a private zoom call. She stated that there is the conference room that was full of people, but that there might be a free room upstairs, but we weren't able to reserve anything. She said we could take a look or we could wait for the general manager to speak with us. We decided to just go upstairs and look for a room. As was predicted, the conference room was full of people, but the open teen room was empty and the area near the computers was free. Since we both had to take zoom calls, my friend and I separated and went into different rooms. I sat in the room for about 30 minutes until my call began and then started it. As soon as my call begins Angela, the Executive Director, storms in yelling at me to leave the teen room. I told her yes, but that I needed a moment to gather my things. She continued to berate me and follow me to another area of the library. There she told me that my computer was too loud,l. I asked her where she would suggest we go and she asked me to leave the library or she would call the police. It should be noted at this point that I am a woman of color. I encouraged her to call the police because I hadn't done anything wrong. As a fellow Director of a major nonprofit institution, I am saddened deeply that as I was trying to absorb the culture of this beautiful place I was met with bigotry and intolerance. As my friends departed all we could think about was the sour taste we all now have. We hope to return one day when all people are treated with kindness and respect.

Saturday morning. 3 inches of snow on the ground and our cabin has no breakfast. Crum Bum (bakery) hit my radar. I parked directly across the street from Crum and I saw the Polyanna Gateway! Then I thought, where is the statue and just beyond my husband's truck, there she was! It was meant to be! I happily went up the large step, took a photo of her and then us together. Located on the front lawn of the library, the parking lot is behind the building or park in town and walk over. Across the street is the Pollyanna Gateway which is a pedestrian stairway with a piano on the sidewalk at the top for anyone to play and colorful umbrellas overhead. At the bottom of the staircase is a public mural project. Littleton, NH is a cute little town with shops and restaurants to visit while in the area. A nice stop along the way.

The kids section in the basement has a puppet stage, an area to listen to books on cd and both a magic school bus and a fire truck to ride in. This in addition of a really excellent book collection including displays of books featuring the latest trends which in this case was PokemonGo and comics. We came in for a stop in the clean bathrooms and stayed for over an hour.
