North Conway Public Library - statue

North Conway Public Library

Libraries should be on the list of local attractions the world over- especially in New England…read morewhere so many small towns have tiny stone building that have been enriching the local community for most of European occupational history. This one is exceptionally cute & worthy of adoration. My partner grew up in this area and reports that he spent many hours ensconced in the upper level window. These days, they've doubled the small footprint with a new addition but maintained the same quaint style and the warm, local vibe. Buy a book on the sidewalk or check or the activities- you'll be glad you stopped by to visit the "real" heart of North Conway.

When we walked into the library we approached the front desk and asked where in the library would be the best place for a private zoom call. She stated that there is the conference room that was full of people, but that there might be a free room upstairs, but we weren't able to reserve anything. She said we could take a look or we could wait for the general manager to speak with us. We decided to just go upstairs and look for a room. As was predicted, the conference room was full of people, but the open teen room was empty and the area near the computers was free. Since we both had to take zoom calls, my friend and I separated and went into different rooms. I sat in the room for about 30 minutes until my call began and then started it. As soon as my call begins Angela, the Executive Director, storms in yelling at me to leave the teen room. I told her yes, but that I needed a moment to gather my things. She continued to berate me and follow me to another area of the library. There she told me that my computer was too loud,l. I asked her where she would suggest we go and she asked me to leave the library or she would call the police. It should be noted at this point that I am a woman of color. I encouraged her to call the police because I hadn't done anything wrong. As a fellow Director of a major nonprofit institution, I am saddened deeply that as I was trying to absorb the culture of this beautiful place I was met with bigotry and intolerance. As my friends departed all we could think about was the sour taste we all now have. We hope to return one day when all people are treated with kindness and respect.

The craved wood staircases, the built for the ages book coves, and the wooden floors that seem to speak. But the library has two other wonderful surprises. The up-to-date collection of books, magazines, and other publications. The locals must love this place as I, a visitor, immediately loved it. Last but not least is the Art collection. The Library itself has several well-placed paintings that blend in with the furniture and neighboring books. The separate Art collection, in a separate climate-controlled room, was a wonderful well-thought-out collection of masterpieces. As a frequent art museum visitor, especially in my hometown of Houston Texas, I was surprised to find the same artist's work here in St Johnsbury as in the art museum in the 4th largest city, especially in the U.S. The Athenarum's stated mission "is to promote life-long learning through art, literature and information services, and to preserve its National Historic Landmark building, art collection, and furnishings." It certainly accomplishes that and so much more. Congratulations! Ed Davis 7/6/24

Lewiston Public Library - beautiful new(ish) library front

No one has reviewed LPL? Geez, Mainers! Get on the Yelp bandwagon - people need to know how amazing…read morethis place is! No longer the dingy, crumbling cave of my childhood, the Lewiston Public Library has apparently expanded twice since my departure from L/A in 2001. My mom asked me to take some of her books back while I was visiting, and I was not only impressed by the new additions to the building, but also received excellent customer service (if that's what you can call it) from Jane, the librarian, who definitely needs to be commended beyond this review. First of all, the expansion of the library is beautiful - it's all exposed brick, modern black trim, and tons of natural light from huge windows (unlike the old building, which is made of beautiful old granite stone, but very dingy and dark inside). The layout is also beautiful and welcoming - the rows of books when you walk in are well-organized and well-tagged. Overall, it's a very inviting experience. Now, Jane. My mom had taken out this very popular book (The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lack), which apparently got recalled - much to Momma's chagrin because the wasn't finished reading it. In order to finish the book, my mom had to go in (I ended up doing so, as her proxy), return the book, and put herself back on the waitlist. Even though this was sort of disappointing because my mom was so gripped with the book that she was constantly reading passages out loud to everyone who would listen, Jane made the process so much easier and more pleasant. Exasperated after having up the phone, my mom told me, "Well, at least it was Jane, she's the best one there." I went in to regulate (haha) the situation on my mom's behalf and lo and behold, Jane was sweeter than pie. I talked with her about the new additions to the library as she checked the books back in, said that she remembered my mom, and quickly and pleasantly put her back on the waitlist for dear ol' Henrietta. I wanted to hug Jane, but instead I walked into a cart of books on my way out, I was so pleased with the experience (also, lol, I have a penchant for walking into thigh-level objects and often have bruises all over me because of this). I went to LPL all the time as a kid. My whole family are avid readers and we used to probably go once a week. However, I can only imagine how just absolutely beautiful the experience is for kids (and adults) now in this modern, beautiful, inviting space. And given the amazing experience with my new favourite librarian, Jane, I'd be here constantly if I lived in Lewiston. Bravo, LPL!

Great resource, but not without its flaws…read more Lots of books, lots of movies, lots of space, and a separate soundproofed kids' room on the 3rd floor. Free WiFi, but it's weak and unreliable. Like many public libraries, you'll get the 15-minute cycle of increasing chatter from a group of kids, followed by "This is a library. If you don't quiet down, you'll need to move to the kids' room, or leave." from a chaperone, parent, or occasionally employee. Then quiet... then increasing chatter. Watch out, a few areas have a funky smell --- not old-book funky, but dirty-carpet funky. Don't get it on you. Similarly, the insufficiently-numerous bathrooms are often fine --- and occasionally awful.
