We went later in the afternoon so parking was ample. A short walk leads you to the picnic area and lake. It's about a 1 mile hike around the lake. The water was clear and cold. There were lots of mosquitoes at that hour. We enjoyed seeing the tadpoles in the water. My family enjoyed our time there and can't wait to go back to this picturesque spot!

It's such a fun activity to do if you have kids, love history, and/or love trains. The employees were friendly, the seats were comfy, and the views were amazing. We went in May so the train was pretty empty; they gave us the option of riding in first class, free of charge. Score! They also told us stories and facts through the intercom. The folks working for the Scenic Train were very friendly and helpful. The building and the train cars seem well maintained. They are clean and for the most part, comfortable. We took the comfort class because we wanted the A/C. The seats are in a restaurant booth configuration. However, if you are a larger person such as me, your belly will be pushed against the table for 4 hours. (My fault, not the train's) For most of the ride out you listen to a very nice narrator talk about the history of the area as you ride though people's backyards. The local children seem to enjoy the train and were in costume on their back deck waving to us on the train. We saw about 30 minutes of some very good views. There is a short stop at a tourist trap store before heading back the same way. (Use the restroom here, the ones on the train as smaller than a phone booth.) We did switch sides for the ride back and got to see the backyards of the houses on the other side of the tracks. The boxed lunch was a sandwich, a bag of chips, a whoopie pie, and a bottle of water. I have to say the sandwich was very good. The roll was soft, fresh, and flavorful. The bag of chips was not just a tiny bag, but a good size. The whoopie pie was very good. It was $20, overpriced, but at least it was quality. I really wanted to like this train ride but it turned out to be uncomfortable for such a long ride, too long, and not all that scenic.

The Madison…read moreBoulder is a ~5,000 ton glacial erratic made of granite - which makes sense since it's found in the Granite State lol. Of course, the pictures don't do it justice and you can't really fathom the size just by reading the stats alone - it's an awe inspiring sight that you have to see to believe! The boulder measures 87 feet long, 23 feet tall, and 37 feet wide. Also, the boulder is partially buried at about 10-12 feet underground! And recently scientists have been able to determine that the boulder is around 14,000 years old. Left behind all those years ago by a retreating glacier. You'll find it down a dirt road with a small, rough dirt parking lot - there are some large, deep potholes so I recommend to drive slow and careful, especially with low clearance vehicles. But it's doable. A short, very flat hike is required along a dirt road but it's well maintained and easy - about 1/2 mile one way. If you visit in fall, you'll be treated to some lovely colors along the way! I visited twice - mid to late October 2021 and early October 2023. Mid to late October had much more colors than early October but it also varies from year to year. You'll find the boulder on the edge of the White Mountain National Forest and only a few miles away from The Kanc - a famous highway in NH for the fall colors. And there are lots of other attractions in the area - lots of rivers and vistas and things like that - as well as the historic Albany Covered Bridge which is a must see (less than 10 miles away). It's free to visit and park - be aware there aren't any restrooms in the area. Google maps will take you right to it - but signal is nonexistent in the area so I recommend to download offline maps before you come. Sadly, on my last visit, someone had put graffiti in several places on the boulder- but a park ranger was there to clean it up. Hopefully they were able to get it removed. I'll never understand why people feel the need to deface natural wonders like that - breaks my heart every time.

The one downside was that, as someone who is perpetually early, the lack of signage to be sure I was in the right place made me a bit nervous that I was where I was suppose to be to catch the bus. We hung out in front of the Portland Lobster Co. For a few minutes before others arrived to reassure us we were in the right spot. Overall, this was a fantastic adventure for this beer lover. I learned new things about breweries I thought I knew everything about and was introduced to Bunker Brews and Ice Tea Mead. We'll be back.

This one is exceptionally cute & worthy of adoration. My partner grew up in this area and reports that he spent many hours ensconced in the upper level window. Buy a book on the sidewalk or check or the activities- you'll be glad you stopped by to visit the "real" heart of North Conway.

She stated that there is the conference room that was full of people, but that there might be a free room upstairs, but we weren't able to reserve anything. She said we could take a look or we could wait for the general manager to speak with us. We decided to just go upstairs and look for a room. As was predicted, the conference room was full of people, but the open teen room was empty and the area near the computers was free. Since we both had to take zoom calls, my friend and I separated and went into different rooms. I sat in the room for about 30 minutes until my call began and then started it. As soon as my call begins Angela, the Executive Director, storms in yelling at me to leave the teen room. I told her yes, but that I needed a moment to gather my things. She continued to berate me and follow me to another area of the library. There she told me that my computer was too loud,l. I asked her where she would suggest we go and she asked me to leave the library or she would call the police. It should be noted at this point that I am a woman of color. I encouraged her to call the police because I hadn't done anything wrong. As a fellow Director of a major nonprofit institution, I am saddened deeply that as I was trying to absorb the culture of this beautiful place I was met with bigotry and intolerance. As my friends departed all we could think about was the sour taste we all now have. We hope to return one day when all people are treated with kindness and respect.
