When I first moved to Jersey City, Coach Mel was the first trainer whose class I took, and I've…read morebeen returning to learn from her for years. I highly recommend her as a personal trainer, and a group coach for groups of all sizes. She's a true master of her craft and someone who will care about your goals as much as you do. She provides the perfect mix of accountability and friendly support. The first time I met Mel, I had never tried strength training and was nervous about doing things correctly and avoiding the risk of injury (especially because I had chronic back issues). She put me at ease immediately and gave me efficient and helpful cues for movements I had never done before. Within the span of an hour, I was in love with strength training (and continue to train that way to this day)! The other thing I loved was the way she created a sense of comradery in the room among students. Even though it was my first time there, I felt immediately welcome. No matter your experience level, if you're looking for someone to design a great program for you (engaging + effective) and/or just keep you motivated to move well, move more and stay healthy, you can count on Coach Mel!

For the intensity and efficaciousness of the one hour workouts offered, it's a f&$#%;/ steal. Staff is pretty friendly and trainers are tough but fair and overall inclusive. They coach in real time, there's no time for bruised egos. Everyone is treated exactly the same, meaning, whether you're dropping in for 30$/class or you dropped near 1k for 6 months up front, there is no preferential treatment. I doubt they even know who's there for long term or not because they are equally engaged with everyone. There's no ac yet so it can get pretty odorous at times especially when you got 15 in a class. I personally dont like hitting people however its a part of certain classes so you gotta know what the theme is for the class youre attending. Small Gatorade is 2$. You can buy gloves i think for 45 or 80. Wraps were 20$ for me. The elasticity is not as good as some of the wraps I got from Title boxing so I probably wouldnt buy from here directly. They do sell merchandise like tshirts and sweatshirts but nothing is on display at this location. Ive been to totally full classes and some with only me and another person and had a great workout regardless. Think body weight exercises, workout with weights, cardio, hitting bags, etc. They dont separate classes by skill and thats something I noticed annoys longer term patrons i e. People who are really there to spar. I just want to get my ass kicked doing a hiit style workout and im not really very well coordinated so sometimes i forget the moves or forget to move to my right or my left. However i got 6 months left to improve and get better. I havent been to any morning classes. Only 530 or 7 which i like the other classmates. I went at 1 on a friday once and loved it because it was a tiny class and the instructor kicked my ass. Im already seeing my body weight distribution shift and my endurance is fire. Ill only get better and I trust them to get me there. Def recommend

The other one was so light that I barely feel like I worked out at all. Phoenyx Fitness has been THE BEST one I have attended so far. For one, this truly is a "at your own pace" workout. My biggest grips with previous classes is that they either killed you and if you weren't prepared too damn bad, no pain no gain. The other was just you can work at your own pace but the instructor set such a low pace that it wasn't very challenging . You definitely get your money's worth with Malenna and the awesome instructors at Phoenyx (I've had most exposure with Kaelynn - sp?). I also started this in the summer so the classes are outdoors. The bad news is - it's rain or shine. the good news is, the classes keep you on your toes with differentiating workouts AND parks. I love when they are held on the UWS for selfish reasons (ha ha). The class runs by so quickly that before you know it, the hour is up. I especially love the 6 am classes - by 7 am you are completely done for the day. That is totally cool.

I have to admit that I stopped working out for about 9 months but he was right there when I decided to get back on the horse. I've since attended his small group sessions, large group sessions in central park and more. He is generous, patient, encouraging, attentive and always knows instantly what exercise to substitute when one causes discomfort (I have old neck and hip injuries that require work-arounds). I had a huge smile on my face though because FOR ONCE, it wasn't from back pain!! My abs were on fire from AN AMAZING WORKOUT!!!! I found Global Strongman Gym on my hunt to find that "thing" that re-ignites my passion for working out. In the first few minutes of being there, I honestly wasn't sure that it was the place for me. As comfortable as I am in weight rooms, they are still usually weight rooms in swanky Manhattan gyms. This is not that. There was definitely equipment there that I had never seen before and I was definitely intimidated. Within 30 seconds of working with Hans, my opinion totally changed. This guy is incredible. He had me stretched and snapped and cracked to painful perfection and my (historically horrible) back hasn't felt that good in years! He showed me how one of my legs was two inches shorter than the other one due to tightness, and then did this crazy psoas release to correct it. WHAT?! I was so impressed and 100% confident that I was in skilled, capable hands. Hans was super direct and extremely supportive during the workout. He immediately corrected my form every time I slacked, and ran me through how I should approach my diet going forward. I lifted heavy things (for me anyway) and.... my absolute favorite.... I got to flip that huge tire all the way up and down the gym. I could do that all day and be perfectly happy. If you are a novice to the strongman world, like me, you will definitely want to start with a solid pack of individual training sessions so Hans can help you build the skills and confidence to navigate the gym solo. I hope to be back soon to start my strongman journey!
