Andrew is an amazing tutor. From our first conversation, I knew that he will ease the anxiety my daughter and I felt about SSAT. He looks at the student holistically and addresses learning that needs to happen and fears/insecurities about the whole process. Just in a few sessions, he was able to give my daughter system for all of the test sections. It is not easy to connect with a teenage kid who hates testing, but Andrew was able to do it in just 1 session. She walked out and said "he is funny" and I know this will work. I only learned of Slingshot summer camp run by Liminus Learning because of an e-flyer that was shared at Presidio Middle School's newsletter last spring. Being a community college faculty, I was excited by the idea of a camp run by high school and college counselors who get to determine the learning curriculum. I knew my son would not be excited and I would have to convince him. Most educators know that being an educator does not mean your kids will be eager students--in fact often quite the opposite when they hit middle school years and want to assert their independence lol. Anyway, Andrew understood my son's reluctance and arranged for a Zoom with him and one of the counselors during the spring. After this Zoom, my son grudgingly agreed to try it. Even on the first day though he had regrets and a sour attitude: "I guess the stereotype of Asian parents wanting their kids to get A's is true...that's why you want to send me to "nerd learning" camp" he said heatedly to me in the car at drop off. I apologized in advance to a few counselors who were outside greeting the new campers. They were blase: "he'll be fine. We're doing ice breakers today." And they were right! My son never came home raving about Slingshot, but neither did he criticize it, which for a middle schooler is a stamp of approval. He did a cool Mentos and Coke experiment (an idea he came up with and was encouraged by counselors to do). He may not emerge as an enthusiastic "nerd learner" but he left closer to being one. I hope to sign him up again next year. To camp director Andrew's credit, he has a good sense of humor and also started referring to it as "nerd learning camp" in occasional text updates to me. This is a good program that seems to honor every participant and builds a good sense of community. Thumbs up! read more

Andrew helped my son get into 4 UC schools! Getting into the UC's can be a bit of a crapshoot, as most all applicants have great grades. The major difference is your insight questions. He provided assistance helping Alex express his thoughts thru words. In December, our son got the great news that he was accepted Early Decision to Wesleyan University in CT. Who can we thank for this? Andrew Lovett. We're so happy we worked with Andrew to tutor our son for the SAT. Our son had taken a national test prep course and it helped quite a bit, but not enough. He was applying to a prestigious liberal arts college back east (with very high average SAT scores). He went through the recruiting process with an athletic team - it was promising, except for his SAT scores (which he needed to raise by 60-80 points). He took more prep classes and retook his SAT, but his scores went up 30 points. Not enough. So we looked beyond test prep classes (group setting) for individualized private tutoring, and met Andrew. It was clear that Andrew could offer individual tutoring and focus on specific areas of improvement, in an intensive, completely personalized, yet fun and engaging manner. So we decided to work with him...we are SO HAPPY we did. -He reviewed the previous SAT results, and looked through multiple practice tests to precisely identify the specific sections with greatest score increase potential -He created a strategy to get 100 points from working on 2 specific areas, and then tailored the sessions for our son, from start to finish -He provided all materials and came to each session prepared and ready to teach -He kept in constant contact, making sure our son was making progress and staying motivated -He's friendly and we can tell he cares about his students -He's got a great sense of humor and connected well with our son -and the result? +160 point improvement!! Andrew's mentorship in writing college application essays has been great. I came to him when I had trouble brain storming ideas for a few essay questions and when I needed his expertise in proofreading my essays and reviewing my initial thoughts about what I wanted to include in my answers. Andrew helped me structure my ideas in a way that was clear and interesting to read. During my sessions with Andrew, he helped me create new ideas that I did not think would work well in a college essay; however, he showed me how these ideas actually did make my essays unique. His guidance in writing the essays helped me tell my story and talk about my reasons for why I would love to attend the colleges I applied to in a convincing way. By the last few sessions I have had with him, I became more comfortable in expressing my ideas in the essays. Our son hit puberty and his attitude and academic performance in seventh grade jeopardized his chances of getting into private high schools. Our school highly recommended Andrew as someone who could tutor on subjects, but more importantly work with our son on more fundamental skills needed to be a successful student - organization, time management, test preparation, constructing a thesis, and so on. I have experienced Andrew's mentorship in a variety of ways. Whenever I lack confidence in a fledgling idea, I seek Andrew to help me give it structure, integrity, and clarity. Andrew helped our 14 yr old son write his high school application essays. In San Francisco, the high school application process for independent schools is as difficult and stressful as the college application process (in our house, we had another kid applying to college at the same time!). Each high school has its own set of questions for applicants to answer -- and this is on top of preparing for at least one standardized test, going on shadow tours, homework and finals ... Anyway, our son was struggling with most of his essays, and it became pretty tense in our house. A friend informed me that Andrew had helped her son the year before with his essays and suggested that I contact him. I'm so glad I did! At their first hour long meeting, Andrew connected immediately with my son and they started brainstorming ideas for his personal statement (I was excused/banished after 10 minutes to let them work). When I returned, they had developed an outline of the entire essay, and my son had already started writing the opening paragraph. Each subsequent meeting, Andrew and my son made significant progress on all of his essays. In between sessions, it was easier for me to give input because Andrew and my son had already developed the main ideas. This eased much of the tension at home. Andrew's calm and supportive guidance allowed my son to develop his voice and to select the stories that best reflected the person that he is. When finalizing the essays, Andrew's comments and suggestions elevated them from good to great.
