It flows into a field of green grass, which tends to be active more for their bigger events. Be prepared to be shoeless inside or have earthy zones outside (comfortable, easy off shoes suggested). On many occasions there's live music going in the back. You can tell a lot of positive love, care, and energy went into creating a spiritual environment intended for people to come together and heal / grow as individuals as well as a collective. I've visited a few times with friends for a range of mindful events, including: music nights, spiritual comedy, mastering mindfulness / energy workshops, and even some foodie events! Still, I've missed others like yoga and sound healing. One of their more interactive sessions is the ecstatic playground, where a lot of people from all different backgrounds, creeds, and ages are encouraged to move about and rediscover their childhood like energies and embrace it in adulthood. In sum, I find the center to have a lot of going on and something for everyone. Go with an open mind. Not everything may be for you, nor is it meant to be! It's a great place to try a variety of mindful type experiences. I don't find the vibe to be pushy, so be comfortable in your skin/ boundaries and respectful to others and their experience; I'm sure you'll receive the same treatment and respect in return. On events that have food, there is more vegan and juice options. Street parking is normally available, but if you live close enough, ride share may make sense. The surrounding area may seem rougher than the energy found inside.

Thankfully, I stumbled onto the Siddha Yoga Meditation Center of Miami after a Google search on an attempt to find people who like to meditate, and ever since my first visit, I have become a regular because this meditation center provides me with a sense of community, teaches me something new each time I go, and has free events (with suggested donations). I came here the first Saturday of August for the first time, and it was a spiritually awakening night. They were hosting their meditation satsang which is meant to strengthen your meditation practice and consists of 90 minutes of chanting and meditation. Coming here from a long hiatus from my meditation practice, I was nervous to go and arrived exactly at 7:30 pm, the minute they started. The parking lot was packed (which shows the center has a strong following), so I parked at the lot across the street which was empty. The minute I walked in, I was faced by steps and after a trek to the second floor, I was exposed to minimalist-styled rooms where you could grab information from the table and a strong scent of jasmine which woke up my senses. The woman who greeted me was very friendly and welcomed me with open arms. She answered all questions I had regarding the center, showed me where I could put my shoes, and walked me through the meeting room where you can picture tea if you are thirsty. Heading to the meditation room, I was told that men sit on the right, and women sit on the left (which is common practice in most meditation centers). There were rows of chairs with dozens of people (all ages) who were chanting. I sat on the side, while I turned off my phone as courtesy to the center. After turning off my phone, I grabbed a mat from the pile on the side and headed to the front. We were led in chanting and meditation by the leader while we faced a large portrait of one of the Siddha masters/gurus. I was not used to chanting so it felt awkward, but the meditation at the end was very relaxing and provided me with a sense of serenity. I was able to quiet my mind for a few minutes which provided me with peace from a long stressful work week. It also provided me with a sense of community, and it was pleasure meeting others my age who were interested in meditation. Wanting to learn more about Siddha meditation, I went with a friend to their Monday event which consisted of hatha yoga and meditation. The hatha yoga was very easy-- not complicated yoga at all-- and was a lot of stretching. The meditation was led by an audio tape, and I had a harder time concentrating on meditating here, but meditation is always complicated to master, but I enjoyed it for providing me with quiet time and a place to avoid traffic heading back home to Kendall. There was only five people here this time, compared to the 20+ people that were there on the first Saturday I went, which may have made the meditation more difficult. If you plan to visit the Siddha Yoga Meditation Center, I would recommend anyone to come with no expectations and just a willingness to learn and meditate. The place is very simple, so do not expect to be meditating in a Canyon Ranch type- meditation center. They are equipped though with rugs and pillows for meditation, which can be used to enhance your meditation experience and hosts different free events throughout the week. This center is open to all types of people (different ages and different ranges of meditation experience) and has friendly people who can answer all your questions. I will definitely try to come here more often because I feel like I have already learned a lot by visiting this center.

I have been to their Monday hatha yoga session twice, and it is very relaxing. So relaxing that my friend I came with fell asleep when we did some floor stretches. Seriously, that's a true story! The lady who teaches the yoga class is friendly, and they also have mats and bands when you come in. Since I work at The Roads, I usually come here on Mondays to avoid traffic. What do I also like about this place? It is completely free (but you can give a suggested donation). I highly recommend anyone to come here. It isn't a fancy place, but it is very homie, and every time I have been here I have learned something new about meditation or yoga. And the adventure continues...

Most recently, I went to Buddha Burn with Jenna on a Sunday afternoon. This is the perfect kind of sweat you want before starting your week. It's intense and fast paced, but the music keeps you going, and she's sure to start and end with plenty of time to stay centered and meditate. I've also tried out Buddha Sculpt which was similar to CorePower, and also went one time where I was the only person there. I was super nervous, but Jenna put me at ease and still ran an awesome private class. The design of this studio is urban and hip, while still being serene. I love the gray walls, wood floor, and Buddha accents. They also excel at nice extra touches like the eucalyptus cold towels at the end, as well as complimentary regular dry towels for when you start sweating (which you will). Parking in the Grove can be a chore sometimes, so give yourself extra time if you're driving in. It's located in the same plaza as the Bookstore in the Grove, a bit hidden behind the plaza's stairs. Afterwards, there are so many perfect spots to grab a bite or coffee! Talk about one perfect day.

When I heard that Jenna was going to be affiliated with Buddha Shack, I was immediately intrigued. I have taken other fitness classes with the Shack's co-founder Jenna and was pretty confident that I'd like her Hip-Hop Buddha Burn class but I was wrong: I didn't "like" Jenna's class, I loved it. The class is challenging with less ohm/chanting and more sweating. The music is so good: playlists feature the likes of J. Cole, Drake, Chance the Rapper along with Coldplay and Bob Marley. The hour long class goes by fast and once I'm sitting up from Savasana I am reminded why I love yoga: I am refocused, happy and calm. Buddha Shack is a beautiful, intimate, very clean, welcoming space. The neon sign above the front desk is my favorite decoration followed closely by the little Yoga Joes (the classic green plastic army men molded into yoga poses). The yoga room itself is heated but not too hot. It is perfectly, dimly lit. There is a mirrored wall but there is also plenty of wall space without mirrors if you prefer to not look at yourself. Things to know before you go: * If you don't own a yoga mat or forgot to bring it, you can rent one at the studio for a minimal fee. You can also purchase water and they have towels (which you will need as you will sweat). * The studio is in the courtyard near Akashi in Coconut Grove, next to a bike shop. * There is plenty of street parking. * Buddha Shack has a bathroom equipped with a shower.

Every class I attend, I feel like I'm surrounded by friends (no judgment here!). In fact, I love taking friends who are new to yoga to the community class here on Friday nights. The proceeds benefit a different local charity every month, and afterwards, we usually get dinner together somewhere on Commodore. There is street parking here all along Commodore and Grand, which can get busy at certain times, but if you're a Grovite like me, there is bicycle parking right across from the studio. The cost of classes is average, and they run deals at different points throughout the year, which are amazing for returning students! Aside from their normal classes, they also run free community classes in Peacock Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays and a rooftop class at the Mayfair on Saturdays. Love, love, love this studio.
