What an awesome adventure in Traverse City! You could go straight to the cooler and buy a…read morepre-picked bag of cherries, but the more fun option is to wander into the cherry grove and pick them yourself! We ended up with 5 overstuffed bags for $50, and we had a blast! Although the trees closest to the barn were pretty well picked over when we arrived in early July, we got lucky and found a family using a ladder who loaned it to us as soon as they were done. We climbed to the top of the ladder to pluck sweet, purple cherries from the tops of the trees. Our kiddos also ended up with a ton of cherries that they found below adult eye lines. The age range of our group was 5 to 73 and everyone in our group had the best time. We were also hoping to pick strawberries, but the lovely staff at the front let us know that the strawberries were mostly gone because it was late in the season for strawberries. The groves were gorgeous and peaceful. If you're in Traverse City and want a fun thing to do with the whole family, come here! Cherries you pick yourself are even sweeter.

We were passing through the area when we stopped at Altonen's roadside farm stand. What caught our…read moreattention was Nutty Brew, a food truck serving coffee and simple breakfast sandwiches. The coffee was terrific!!! I'll admit, I was surprised to find such a good latte along the highway like that. While we waited for our treats, we petted Ruby, their adorable, large poodle. That pulled our attention to the fresh produce. My wife is always bragging about the corn she gets at a farm stand in her Indiana home town. I challenged her that northern Michigan corn could meet that standard. The gentleman working there selected three perfect ears and I'm thrilled to report that, after a double-blind taste test with her entire family, Altonen's corn earned a unanimous victory! We also enjoyed their fresh blueberries and a loaf of zucchini pecan bread. Lastly, their hospitality reflected the best of the midwest warmth and servitude. We will go out of our way to visit this farm stand the next time we're up north!
