It's mostly a take out place although they do have about 6 tables if you prefer to eat in (there's no such thing as ambiance here unless you're in the mood for the neighborhood mom and pop diner feeling). The good thing is, it's pretty obvious these locals keep on coming back and that's because the food is real good and fresh as well as very fairly priced. A small fish and chips cost just under 7 pounds and was more than big enough sized for lunch. This is pretty much a fish and chips spot, although they will grill your fish for you as well, and I must say, this is the BEST fish and chips I've had in London to-date. Granted everyone has their own tastes and that "best" moniker is used everywhere but let me tell you, it was cooked just right, nice crunchy batter with nice and tender haddock tucked inside (you can choose from about 5 fish choices for them to fry up for you). I will definitely be going back here there's no doubt, it's in a random location but if you are in Balham and craving some fish and chips, this is a great spot to hit up!

I thought it was a bit pricey for fish and chips until got home and saw the size of the portions HUGE! It could have easily fed 2 people who hadn't eaten for a while!! There is a bit of waiting time for some of the food as they cook it fresh but the staff is the shop are nice and chatty so you are entertained while you wait!

It was lunch time but I decided to order a regular portion since I wanted a larger fish. It was cooked fresh to order and I ordered for takeaway. The wait was fine considering fresh cook to order. I was asked if I wanted salt and vinegar and of course yes! I would say in general I enjoyed the fresh cod it was a lovely cut and cooked perfectly. I was surprised by a few things. I was served about one kg of chips. Way too many chips for one person. The chips had a nice flavor but seemed a bit mushy. Maybe a little undercooked? Only my chips got salt and vinegar which meant the fish stayed crispy for takeaway but it was also bland. Also I wasn't provided any tartar sauce. Maybe that needs to be ordered separately? Could have been a rookie mistake on my part. Was this the best in London? No but it could be. Serve half as many chips, put salt and vinegar on the fish as well as the chips, and ask the customer if he or she would like tartar sauce. Overall above average but not quite the best!

Last night, I got myself some post-surgery celebration chips - with cod, onion gravy and mushy peas. You know how you have to fast before surgery, even if it's minor? Well, by the time I got home at 8pm, I was famished. Kennedy's made it all ok. Kennedy's are WONDERFUL. Not only is the fish superbly white and fluffy, in a crisp, golden batter, and the chips fat and plentiful, but the service is efficient. Long live properly FAST food. The mushy peas were nothing to write home about (not bad, but not amazing like the fish and the chips). But the onion gravy? Om nom nom. I ended up stuffed after just half a plateful - I guess that comes from fasting all day. But leftover chips for breakfast? Thank you very much... :)

Service polite and unobtrusive. Pay at the till afterwards. Recommended.

They know that when you order takeaway fish and chips you must be stomach-clenchingly famished and very tired. Marina Fish Restaurant is a smartly decorated, modern looking fish and chip restaurant. Before I called by, I had actually thought it was a fish restaurant in the broader sense, due to the name and the look of the place. Actually I think they are missing a trick in not offering a wider choice of fishy treats, as I'm sure there would be demand in the area, and it's good-looking enough for people to come for the evening and spend a little more on dinner. The takeaway is tasty, but a bit expensive. The classy cardboard boxes printed with the restaurant's name look good (a childish bit of me thinks 'ooh, fancy!' each time, and feels like I have gone up in the world, to be purchasing boxed London fish and chips as if it is a fancy fish and chips boutique) but by the time I get home the steam build-up has always made everything go a bit limp. I'd be happy to pay a quid less per portion and forgo the box and the lemon wedge.
