I use yelp often, however I have yet to have an experience, so positive or negative that has inspired me to write a review. Typically I would rate the gym 5 stars. I like it. And the high cost is worth it for myself and my family. The kids love it!
But a recent experience had left a bad taste in my mouth.
While Lifetime Fitness in Ashburn is infamous for their covert and sometimes overt racism, I had no idea they were adding sexism to the list of all the other wonderful amenities available at this center. Truthfully the concept of Lifetime Fitness is fantastic. And in most cases the application of it is second to none. Having been a member for over 5 years I have seen some fantastic changes over the years. I have also witnessed some amazingly disturbing behavior in terms of racial sensitivity and sometimes outright racist behavior. Just ask any current or former employee. To be fair, I don't believe it is company policy, but I do think it is tolerated to the point that it may be considered condoning the behavior. Unfortunately it is a part of the world we live in. However today I witness the most ridiculous, insulting, obnoxious display of sexism I have seen in years. As a member we have access to the entire gym and it's classes. Again, part of the perks. The one thing they don't have is crossfit. Of course anyone who has been in a crossfit box knows the fitness center is not necessarily conducive to most crossfit workouts. So a group of women and the occasional man or two try to get together for a crossfit inspired workout. Today myself and two other women (all current, paying, members, with a combined total of 9 children who pay $10 each per child in addition to the $80+ membership fee), were working out. Two of the women are in pretty good shape, the other still with a ways to go on her fitness journey. One would assume, your workouts are your own, and I would have never thought it appropriate for staffers to watch your every move. Knowing this makes it difficult to give it everything we have and to push ourselves through the workout.
Anyway, on Friday 6/28, Out of no where we were interrupted during the cool down/stretching part of our workout by the Personal Training manager. He proceeded to tell one of the ladies that she is not allowed to train people in the gym and that only Lifetime Fitness trainers are certified to train in the gym. Ok, I can understand that. When she explained, we were just a group of people working out together and encouraging each other to push ourselves; he continued insisting that she was and that Lifetime isn't responsible if someone gets hurt using the equipment. Totally understood, but he continued on despite my explanation that working out together helps me personally by giving me the confidence to do free weights amongst the bodybuilding types that populate the free weight area. He was polite and professional about it, true. But being polite and professional while being ridiculous and sexist, is lipstick on a pig. Besides, isn't acknowledging liability tied into what we signed as part of the membership agreement? Aren't we paying a combined $350+ a month to use all parts of the gym? Is this a conversation was had with the 4 separate groups of men working out on the free weights? Is it sooo inconceivable that women may want to push their fitness plateaus and increase their strength by something other that the weight machines? It's it because women have no idea of using weights as a workout, unless some 20 something cocky, obnoxious, semi-fit kid that is certified by Lifetime, is beside them looking condescending, bored, and checking out girls for $69 per hour? I have a suggestion to the trainers who undoubtedly complained to the Training manager...
Pay attention to your clients. They are paying you! I don't appreciate the fact that big brother is watching and reporting even at the gym.. and just so you know...
Women are strong, powerful and capable of more than whatever little you give us credit for. Trying to prevent its from working out and training together isn't going to convince us to sign up with one of your "trainers!" Oh and business 101, Customer Service is Key...
I will be sending a complaint to the corporate office and I still write an update on their response.... smh read more
