Like Qype, LIDL is based in Germany. And it's not just the country of origin that these two companies have in common. Both names have three consonants and just one vowel! LIDL stores have an ever-changing range of 'specials' items that include housewares, DIY materials, garden tools, clothing, footwear, consumer electronics, small toys, baby toys, stationery, etc. However, these are in limited supply, available while stocks last, and often not all items are sold in all stores at the same time. Popular items can run out VERY fast. Because of this, it can be useful to register online for their newsletter, which is delivered by email and gives you advanced notice about the special items planned for sale, and indicating your post-code will get you periodic information about what will be stocked at your nearest store. The sign-up page is at: http://www.lidl.co.uk/uk/home.nsf/pages/c.service.nl.sub.index
Most of their children's shoes are excellent, comfortable (and unique in design compared to UK footwear), which are a budgetary treat to parents as they are often at a price of just 2.99 6.99. But these tend to run out of stock quickly.
Items that are always stocked, which are of particularly good value, include washing machine round laundry tablets, dishwasher soap, and bottled water (2 liter bottles of French water for under 30p). Note that they charge for plastic carrier bags (price depends on size) so either bring your own, or grab an empty box from somewhere in the store (there are usually plenty around), or otherwise just be sure that your car seats, floors or boot are not muddy if you are going to throw your shopping items directly into your car without a bag or box to put them in.
Note that they don't take credit cards (only debit cards or cash). Also, there is no place to try on clothing. If you need to bring anything back, you can but don't be intimidated by long lines (the people behind you will just have to wait) at the till or the lack of a customer service desk. Refunds are given at the check-out till.
I would also recommend that you should check your receipt carefully, and preferably before you stroll too far away from your till after paying, as prices are not always updated on their computer and although they are friendly and helpful about making corrections I have encountered a comparatively high rate of overcharges at this company's stores. read more
