Although it's surrounded by new housing, it's actually pretty central, and only a 10 minute walk from the centre of town. It's also served by several of Barry's local buses. Although a lot of people are disparaging about Morrison's, I quite like this store: it's clean, bright, and well-stocked, and with wide aisles. The quality of fruit and veg is fine (not quite up to Waitrose standards, but then you're paying less) and it's large enough to cope with the most demanding weekly shop. There's an in-store bakery, cake shop, butcher, fish counter and delicatessen, as well as a fresh salad and fresh pizza counter. The large cafe at one end of the store is fine, if you need some sustenance before or after your shop, and it seems popular with pensioners and the odd family doing just that. There's a very large car park, and a petrol station with very competitive prices and reasonable opening hours (NB it doesn't open until 7am, so if you have an early start, fill up the night before). Other facilities include a cashpoint, customer toilets and recycling centre.

Morrisons is great at trying to get that 'market feel' with a bakery, deli counter, fish counter and butchers. The petrol station can be a pain - the layout is terrible and if it's busy it's hard to get out of the car park. This is the biggest Tesco store I have ever been in and the sheer size of it makes most supermarkets look like a mouse's broom cupboard. With two floors and over 100,000 square feet of space to play with, Tesco Extra in Talbot Green is one of the largest Tesco superstores in Wales, if not the universe. The amount of things on offer in this store can easily turn a quick trip for a loaf of bread into a fully blown shopping extravaganza the likes of which would rival Michael Jackson. In addition to the obvious selection of food available, they offer electrical appliances, clothing, home entertainment, toys, books, magazines, homeware, mobile phones and photo processing, as well as having an onsite pharmacy, opticians and a café. About the only things this store doesn't stock are tartan paint and spirit level bubbles. Located just a short distance away from Talbot Green Retail Park, this store is situated amongst a great selection of high street outlets such as Argos Extra, Next, River Island and M&S. Also there is another retail park just down the road that also offers a number of other shops to choose from. Whether you need a pint of milk, a car charger for your iPod or anything in between, you will find it here at Tesco Extra. You might spend a while searching for it, but you will find it.

The car park is poorly laid out and you can be trapped for more than a small lifetime if you try to get out on a Saturday afternoon. That said, once inside the store it's not too bad. The clothing and DVDs etc are up on the first floor and so allowed quite a lot more space than some of the other Tesco Extras. As ever, the home stuff is pretty cheap and fairly quality. I've kitted out more than one uni goer in this Tesco.

It always seems a struggle whenever you visit to cope simply with the volume of people struggling to get around the store shopping. That said the store seems to sell a fantastic range or products with a pharmacy, a photo store and electronics counter. It has a fish counter and bakery and also a hot chicken counter too. The store is so big I wonder if you could see everything whilst walking around and I tend to miss essentials walking around.

You can buy everything from ink for your printer to Polish foods. Their online service is also excellent and you can usually get a delivery slot for the very next day. Products come with good shelf life too.

Afro Ethnic Continental is a reasonably well stocked shop on the City Road. There's another African shop a little ways down toward the centre of town on the City Road that appears to have got the balance about right. They specialise in food and beauty and hair care, and although it's possible to buy the odd ornament or artefact, they seem to use these colourful pieces to decorate the shop and are certainly not reliant on the sales of these objects in a commercially crucial way. Nevertheless, Afro Ethnic Continental definitely serves a niche at this end of the street, and the prices are pretty reasonable considering how far some of the food has had to travel. There is much call for food of African food in Cardiff and very few outlets catering for the demand. So, I guess this little shop does okay regardless of my speculations!

By the time you add on the cost of petrol to get to a larger supermarket, it is worth paying the slightly higher prices in this store. The staff are all locals and most have been there since the store opened. Tesco's obviously made a commercial decision to open in this village, but it is one that is much appreciated by those living here. It has free parking for about a dozen cars, but that is sufficient as many of their customers are pedestrians. The village post office is also located inside the store.
