** PET FRIENDLY ** We stayed here on our drive from San Diego to KC! The lady at the front desk was so kind and helpful. When we got in we had been driving for 14 hours so we were tired, hungry, and hot! She helped us get a great room right by an exit door and a grassy area so I could walk my dog! They are redoing a lot of things right now so it wasn't the most top notch place we've ever stayed in but it was exactly what we needed. The parking lots are well lit so I wasn't worried about my car being broken into. Lots of ice machines and AC in the room. It was clean and we had all of the toiletries and towels we needed. It can be hard to find a pet friendly place to stay so that was a huge plus! Gas stations, fast food and breakfast place very close by! The only downside was how hot the inside of the hotel is since there is no AC in the common areas just in your room. We will definitely stay here again on our long road trips! read more

This hotel is now, The Hometown Inn by OYO. Stayed here for 7 nights while clearing out my mother-in-laws home after her passing. Pros: We had two double beds and they were comfortable. Clean sheets and hey- no bugs! Hot shower was nice after a long day moving boxes. Good water pressure. TV, refrigerator, and air conditioner unit were in working condition. Didn't use microwave. Washer/dryer available down the hall. Cons: As cordial and kind as the propriators are, they have taken on too much in what should be their golden years. If you have mold allergies, don't stay at this hotel. Roof leaks throughout (not in the room, thank goodness). Flower pots in the middle of halls (tripping hazard) to catch drips. Inside our upstairs room, there was ample mold on the inside of the shower liner, on the shower head, and the air vents. Was told the restaurant was not in use, so no breakfast, but there is a pancake house next door which we didn't have time to go to. Pool was also not available to use. Room was dated (1980s) and two red chairs alongside window were ratty and old. Why not have just one chair and recover it to update? Tip- a little paint goes a long way to cover coral pink walls in room. Some towels were stained, so we used those to step on after a shower. Light fixtures above beds were adiquate for reading, but shades were dirty and one ripped. Manager was installing tile himself in lobby, but if cost is an issue, vinyl or peel-and-stick carpet squares would suffice, then take that money and update the rooms. We peaked in the windows of queen bed rooms and the mattresses were dipped at least 4" in the middle. Reminds one that many a body has slept there. Time for new mattresses! This is not the choice part of town so I would park your car in the front of the hotel and not the back, even though well lit. Suspect the Audi and Mercedes parked in front of hotel at entrance were the owners (they were there all week) which would lead me to believe they care more about their status driving around town than their failing hotel. read more

Where to start. As we approached Liberal, after a long day on the road, my wife did a search for hotels. Although we aren't big fans of Super 8, her search revealed a rating of 4.7 stars and a description that made it look like a luxury hotel, including a deep soaker tub. Heh heh. It said there were big discounts and super rates. We arrived and I went to check in. The clerk was not a people person. Me: Do you have a room available tonight? And the internet search said something about big discounts. We've driven through here before and didn't know it was Dorothy's (Wizard of Oz) hometown (making light conversation). Clerk (looking up): How many beds? Me: Just one on the main level if possible. Are you related to Dorothy? (Being funny). Clerk (annoyed): No So, we unpack the car and go to our room. Remember the "deep soaker tub?" Turned out to be regular, very old, typical motel tub. Remember the 4.7 star rating? Although the room was clean, the carpet was nearing replacement age and the room had a bit of an odd smell (we got used to that quickly). There is an extreme shortage of electrical outlets in this day an age of recharging needs, although there was a power strip by the tv. Now the topper. We were sitting in our room (oh, the room was roomy - 1 star earned). Sitting there getting comfortable, we heard a key card in our door lock. The door opened and in walks a very large construction-worker type guy. I describe him that way because several construction workers were staying in the motel that night. He was as startled as we were. He excused himself (twice) and left. I went to the front desk and asked if there was a problem double-renting our room. The clerk said nobody said anything. I told the clerk what happened and, now, there's someone with a key to our room. Nice. The clerk gave me a $10 discount. WTH? So, as I write this, we are sitting in our room, all the locks in place, and a large cooler in front of the door. Now, the next morning. My wife and I both slept like babies. The bed was very comfortable. That's the important thing, right? The shower was just adequate. The breakfast buffet was smaller than most, but the scrambled eggs were the best I've ever had in a hotel/motel, EVER. The morning clerk was cheery and well dressed (vs. sweatshirt and jeans. After the overnight and morning experience, I'm increasingly my review to three stars. Why no higher? Only because of the need for some updating and my previously mentioned experiences. read more

Okay... so, I have this love-hate relationship with the state of Kansas. For starters, I lived in Colorado for a chunk of my life...which means plenty of Kansas jokes were dropped in my day... With life being the way it is, I have had to go back to KS for work (a lot of times) and have gotten to know most of the state... Including Liberal, KS. For whatever reason, the Liberal Inn is where we chose to bed down and the Liberal Inn Restaurant is where dined... This place carries a dated feel but in a good way. The restaurant's food is hardy and the bar has it's local characters. The room was adequate. Overall, this place sticks out in my fonder memories of working in Kansas. As for my love-hate relationship with Kansas, Liberal (thanks to the Liberal Inn) falls on the side of love (liberally). Love to stay here. Good rate clean rooms. Breakfast: Biscuit n gravy heavenly. They are a little too quick to fill coffee, but I am weird as I like luke warm. Haha. Lunch specials always good and good value. Beef tenderloin always cooked to perfect order even as room service. Good cold beer and friendly bar on side. Made travel and stay enjoyable. Right across road from local Coronado museum and "Dorothy's House". Airport shuttle for free. Even took me to the great Air Museum they have hidden away here. Will definitely be back. read more

Great motel, great Restraunt in the motel! The staff is very friendly & accommodating. Our room was very clean, great beds, coffee maker in the room was a plus. They have a nice indoor pool & hot tub, open year round. If u ask for discount rates they offer a few options. They do give a wind energy discount, pilot car discount. I would defiantly recommend this motel to anyone wanting a nice, clean motel to spend a day or week at. read more

This review is for the restaurant. I am not sure what it is about restaurants in this part of Kansas (or maybe it is just Kansas, the Midwest, or small towns in general?), but mediocre food seems to be standard. The food at Liberal Inn isnt necessarily bad, its just... food. Most of it seems like frozen product which has been fried. The salads are just plain shredded iceberg lettuce with nothing much else. Basically simple stuff you could make easily at home if you had the time. Nothing we had was bad, it just wasnt very interesting. read more

Stayed for one night, room smelled of old smoke. Chairs where poor, bottoms where given out. Old mattresses and just dark and bad vibes.

Everyone is very nice, all staff and house keeping. Meals are reasonable, swimming pool and hot tub. Rates are reasonable and they accommodate disabled people. All you have to do is tell them and they'll put you on a ground room floor. Have smoking and non smoking rooms, which is great! read more

Nice hotel! It has swimming pool and those ones that has hot water! The one with hot water, good to soothe the "bad leg," after day of walking and exploring! Across from Dorothy And Toto House! Although second day I go longer way, walk down side walks until I see the traffic lights, cross, then walk up to the Seward County Museum and the Dorothy And Toto House! Word of advice: This hotel does not provide shampoo or does not provide hand lotions! You need bring your own! The room I was in, Handicap Room so first floor, did have teh robe, that long white robe! Says hotel name, has an image of Doroty and Toto (ha ha ha)! Even Kenny McElvain, the owner, helpful in giving directions and giving maps! I need get out of habit just stood there at first, as in Sacramento, whether stay at time or no stay at time, I always used hearing when need directions, "Please Come Back When You Are Done," guess first full day at any hotel, I thinking that way! If you are on the way to Whichita via the road to Taos, then this might be a logical stop for a good nights rest, a hearty meal, and if you are a movie or military history buff, a bit of sightseeing. This small Inn might be the biggest thing in town when it comes to your dining and hotel dollar. For less than $10 you and a good friend can have more than you can possible eat for breakfast, and then stroll across the street to see the actual house "Dorothy" lived in in the famous movie "The Wizard of Oz". You might get a kick out of the yellow brick road...but remember, when you click your heels, you are still definitely in Kansas. If movies aren't your thing, then check out the airplane museum....particularly if you are interested in World War II fighter planes. Very dirty hotel, unfriendly and food isn't that good. Rooms are very poor and smell like smoke. I stayed here and across the street at Southwind Inn. Trust me this little place is very beautiful clean and best bang for your buck! Oh did I mention yellow brick road starts behind this hotel. BOO. My husband said "hmmm. I feel distinctly unwanted in this place." Unfriendly staff and the all time stupidest waitress in the planet. Rigid rules e.g. "we stop serving breakfast at 11" said at 11:05. With no apology or with no "let me see if the chef turned off the griddle." Also so so food that was too much money for what you got. AVOID. The waitress was dumb as a bag of hammers. She kept getting orders wrong, and when you'd ask her something directly, e.g. "please bring A-1 steak sauce" she's bring something else. This happened with drinks (e.g. brought coke instead of sprite) and with the way meat was cooked (brought it well done versus medium rare). It was the most passive aggressive waitressing experienced I have ever witnessed. Give this place a pass. read more

Great Motel. Friendly Staff. Clean Rooms I have stayed here many many times over the years. It used to be a Holiday Inn with outdoor exposed ramps. They cut ties with Holiday Inn to keep prices low. They also enclosed the hotel and put in a great indoor pool and hot tub. That is a hard thing to do and they pulled it off nicely. You can eat in the café, the bar, or have food delivered timely and hot to your room. Rare thing in this day and age, but very nice after a hard day. The bar has a host of on the road and locals that frequent this place. Local independent owners, very vested in the comfort and happiness of their customers. Customers are mostly return customers. Rare thing in hotel biz today especially in as an out of the way place as this. I wish every town I had to stay in had a place like this. I look anyway. Food was great. Sizzling Aged Tenderloin steak with has browns was great way to end a day. Yes it is really served sizzling. Lunch specials every day were excellent and great value. Mexican Crispitos (sp?) are to die for. Best ham and beans anywhere. Western Burger is HUGE! I wish it was closer to my house. LOL read more

Do NOT stay here! Dirty, moldy, gross Motel! We were coming from AZ to MN and needed a place to stay half way, which was Liberal. We looked at the reviews and this seemed to be a good price at $71 with tax so it was cheaper than most of the Holiday Inn and Hampton Inn chains. What a mistake! Pay the extra $20 and stay someplace clean and nice. We checked in and the desk clerk was nice but I was weary right away. Old dried flowers all around, loud bar noise from the bar and motel seemed old and outdated. We had a room on the south side on the first floor. This is an old Motel that bricked in the hallways so you come in a door to a unheated hallway then you see all the rooms with glass windows the length of the walls. We opened up our door and I felt like we were in 1970. Red, dirty carpet. Rocker velour recliners that were dirty and old. Two beds that had old pillows and no fitted sheet just a top sheet. I checked for bed bugs and didn't see any. I seriously thought about sleeping in our new car but the neighborhood here is sketchy. The bathroom/sink area is separated by a door. Then the sink area and bedroom is separated by a bifold old 1970's door. The TV was a flat screen and looked new. We put our luggage in the room and it was 11PM and decided we may need a cocktail in order to sleep here. We went into the bar area. Very sketchy people here as well. Had a drink and went back to the room. We went back to the room, people out in the hallways looking for their cat that got out. As we walked to our room a huge white dog barked at us through the curtains of another room. Then two more little dogs barked at the next room. We felt like we were at the Bates Motel and this was a scary dream. We got ready for bed and tried to sleep. I coughed all night long! Heard people in the night outside our room going up and down the concrete steps to the 2nd floor. Got up at six and took a shower, still coughing. The shower was actually pretty good. Went to the restaurants for the free breakfast. Older lady with stringy grey hair said they don't open until 7:00 and shooed us away, it was 6:55 AM. At least we could have sat down. Wen went back to our room and packed up our stuff and drove to the front of the Motel. Went in to eat. Small menu for Motel guests. I had oatmeal and toast, my brother had sausage and biscuits. Pretty bland. We left and would NEVER go back. Beware that this is not remodeled, made me cough all night, and has lots of sketchy people here. Do yourself a favor and stay at the Holiday Inn or Hampton Inn. Gross, just gross... read more

This hotel was def built somewhere around the 70's. The rooms are kinda cute if you like that decor. Beds are comfortable. Have stayed here several times but never with my dogs. Found the gem of the courtyard. Perfect place to let our dogs get some exercise off leash. Just watch for other dogs with same idea. Took them out first thing in morning with my coffee and and relaxed listening to all the birds sing. Just pick up after your dogs. People were friendly. Don't leave valuables in car as is kind of sketchy area but then Liberal is overall. We were here for family emergency and they gave us a 2 for 1 rate. NO cost for our dogs. Worth going out of your way to stay at or plan on sleeping in during a trip, if only so you can say that you stayed in the turducken of hotels. What seems to have once been a travel hotel/possibly old school Holiday Inn has been literally swallowed up by the shell of another hotel, like a giant whale ingesting it and building a hotel within a hotel. So what were once outdoor walkways are now covered in an aluminum shell and a new hallway that lends an awesome surreal vibe to the place that is both futuristic, welcoming, and somewhat horrifying. I imagine in the cold winters it makes perfect sense, but during the summer it seems more Logan's Run than anything else. That aside, the rooms themselves are dated but well cleaned, and very much scream of the construction of a 60's hotel with 90's fixtures and outfitting. Don't expect much modern or upscale, and its pleasant and not a bad place to lay your head. The restaurant itself offers typical mid-western/heartland fare, nothing particularly noteworthy but nothing gross or upsetting. A big heavy breakfast before hitting the road with an old school diner-esque waitress is perfect to get through all the corn and wheat that is inevitable on the road ahead. read more
