    Goldfinch Cyclery - Kona bike!

Here's the revised Yelp review with Ian properly credited and that detail woven in naturally:…read more Buying a bike from Goldfinch Cyclery back in August turned out to be a fantastic decision. We had just moved to the area, and someone recommended Goldfinch when I mentioned I was looking for a new bike. I'm so glad I listened. I test-rode a couple of bikes at first and honestly wasn't in love with the initial options. Ian, who helped me, never rushed me or tried to push a sale. His focus was clearly on making sure I ended up with the right bike for Eastern Iowa riding--not just any bike. He eventually recommended a Kona they had on display that was already outfitted with excellent tires and some really nice upgrades. I took it out for a ride and immediately loved it. Even though I own other bikes, this is the one I keep reaching for--I've been riding it consistently ever since. What really stood out was that I never felt "sold to." Goldfinch is all about matching you with the right gear, whether that's the right bike, accessories, or equipment. They did a great job getting everything dialed in and even threw in a couple of extras, which was a thoughtful touch. We've been back several times since to look at bags and other gear, and every visit reinforces why I like this shop. They remember my name, they're genuinely friendly and personable, and it's clear they truly care about the cycling community in the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City area. If you're looking to buy a bike or want a shop that puts cyclists first, I highly recommend Goldfinch Cyclery.

I so appreciate Lillian taking the time to help me pick out a bike I knew I would be happy with…read more She was in no hurry for me to make a decision and nor was I. I got to test drive a bike on a trail and even rented a bike for several days to try out. I know without a doubt I chose a good bike for me. And then she surprisingly pulls out a color I love at the conclusion of our deliberation. I'll eventually buy another bike so when I have a friend over there's no excuse not to take a ride! My dear avid biker son, who is no longer here, liked working with Gold Finch and now I know why. The kindness of the people who work there is worthy of mention also. Happy to support this small local business!

This store started like thirty years ago, trying to bring mountain culture to Iowa. I'd say…read morethey've succeeded and are definitely the go-to for any outdoor retail needs in the area. They've got the big brands like: Patagonia, Marmot, North Face, Columbia, etc. When it comes to apparel that will withstand a trip to the Alps (or who are we kidding, a January in Iowa City :D) they've got you covered! Five floors of retail ranging from -- apparel, footwear and equipment. Items for boating, fishing, cycling, skiing, running, golfing, hunting, climbing-- almost anything you could do outdoors, they have something for. For as much as they have in the store, you'd expect it to the be cluttered. But it is very easy to get around and find what you're looking for. They did a great job organizing items and utilizing each floor of space. (*There are a lot of stairs! You've been warned.*) I can't say I frequent here often, but when I do-- I leave with what I came for. Pricing is fair but I honestly go straight to the sale rack when I'm here. (I've always been a fan of the sidewalk sales during the summer. Always finding a new pair of shoes at a great price!) Staff is VERY knowledgeable and welcoming. The location is stellar, with the ramp right across the street.

Active Endeavors can definitely be a pricey since they carry all of the high quality name brands…read moreyou seek when you're gearing up for an outdoorsy trip, but their sales staff is excellent, and if you plan accordingly (aka try to buy things off season) you can find some absolutely wonderful deals. For example - last winter I spilled battery acid all over my NorthFace winter jacket - the kind that goes down to your ankles. BUT it happened just late enough in the winter that Active Endeavors was gearing up for one of their annual sales, and guess what? I got a replacement jacket for nearly 50 percent off. Huzzah! It was a win for me because I got a new coat, and I had the opportunity to support a local business, which I love doing. Active Endeavors also has a killer shoe selection - I'm not sure if people know this, but it's worth checking out!

This Scheels is located at the Coral Ridge Mall, specifically next door to Target. I love Scheels…read moreand so my husband, our little girl dog (yes Scheels are dog friendly) and I came by to this location this afternoon for a visit. When we came in, we had a few employees greet us and smile as they saw our little girl (honestly it's hard to be in a bad mood when you sees you because she is so cute and will turn your bad day into a much better one). Not expecting to really purchase anything in particular, we just walked around the store and browsed. This location sells Iowa University clothing, that can be found on the first floor. There is also a mascot statue of Herky The Hawk by the clothing section (an older version of this mascot). Upstairs, you can find rifles, binoculars, etc. But most importantly the dog section, in which our little girl was very excited to lead us to (although this is our first time visiting this location, she just knew where her section is). We let her choose what item she would like for us to buy her, which ended up being a resealable bag of dried salmon dog treats. At the register downstairs, this friendly employee had asked if our dog had picked out this item herself, lol. We laughed about it, as we told him yes she did. Overall, had a great shopping experience and would shop here regularly if I lived around this area.

How have I never reviewed Scheels?…read more I am grateful to have this location. With two kiddos that are active in a lot of sports, Scheels has come to the rescue a time or two. (Specifically, when I realized my son didn't have an adequate batting helmet for baseball mere hours before his first game of the season. I was able to order online and pickup no problem. He is insanely proud of his golden helmet, might I add.) This location expanded during the pandemic and has a ton! Hunting, biking, fishing, skiing,... a robust Iowa Hawkeye apparel section... shoes, apparel-- you name it! Honestly, my favorite spot to shop Scheels is online. I got some amazing Fornia clothes on clearance. My blazer I got is legit one of my favorite things and I spent less than $10-- what a steal! I also got some great Mud Pie Christmas decor super cheap online. It's open daily, parking is a non-issue. Staff is always so friendly and knowledgable. As I mentioned above, don't forget to order online easily for pickup.
