My first experience with Midwest Shooting was my birthday party with my family. We decided to book our party there using the simulator and it was the perfect ice breaker and activity for our entire multigenerational family. We all had such a blast and were equally able to participate and took directions from our guide, Tyrone. The place is amazing. It is really clean and organized, safe, friendly and welcoming. They carry all types of firearms and accessories for every level of shooter. I was intimidated at what I imagined it might be like, worried there would be grumpy men not wanting to help me with my silly girl questions and it was far from that. They were all so professional and knowledgeable. I had such a great time that I decided to take classes and get my carry permit and purchase my own firearm. They provide all of that, even women only classes. And you can rent until you are ready to buy! I received great help from all the guys finding the right handgun for me and handled all the registration paperwork. I cannot say enough great things about Tyrone and the others down at Midwest Shooting. The showroom is full of every accessory you can think of and I have never had a hard time finding things or had to wait for assistance. It really is a great place. I went in tonight by myself for the first time ever to shoot and wanted to rent a gun that I had been researching to see if I wanted to buy it. I went through 150 rounds between the rental and what I had brought in to shoot. I rented a Springfield XD Mod 2 subcompact 9mm and loved it. Needless to say I wound up making a purchase after my shooting session was over. The staff was all very friendly and during the purchasing process I was shown how to take apart and properly clean my new handgun. We also talked about some proper handling, home defense, and I was given a pamphlet with info about a women's shooting chapter aimed at empowering female shooters and educating on everything from proper shooting technique and gun care to education on situations when a firearm is needed with children present. Their prices were pretty comparable to other places I've looked in the area and the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable! Great place! read more

Went here for the first time this weekend and bought a family membership. I am not a big gun person, however as a sport it is quite enjoyable. The membership prices were fairly inexpensive and my husband loved that one can get discounts on ammo and accessories. The employee that signed us up was very knowledgeable (Will was his name?). I will admit being a beginner I was very intimidated by other individuals at the range... However everyone was very friendly. My first impressions of this place was so, so, they were a little nerdy on some of the safety rules, but! Thats a very good thing, and the people and the place grew on me fast. I have bought multiple guns and optics here. I love there gun rental program. I recently bought a suppressor through them and they made the process as effortless as it could be. I love being able to shoot my suppressor in the range while having to wait for the atf clearance. If your thinking about buying a gun or suppressor I highly recommend trying them out. read more

Answer the phone! Have tried in December, January and February to sign up for CCW class. My spouse took a Pull the Trigger class and we both want a CCW - and wanted a place to try out and then purchase a handgun. CCW classes are posted online but whenever you call the call goes straight to an answering machine (always called during business hours). Messages are left but no calls are ever returned. Left Messages for February CCW classes in January and first week of Feb. Finally got though - all classes full for February - but that is not updated on the website. Person who answered the phone's comment, "Maybe you should call someone else". Good advice, I will. You've lost me as a customer. read more

If I were you I would take my business elsewhere. I called and asked if they carried a certain semi auto pistol I had seen on the Cheaper Than Dirt website. Of course they did not, but they said they could order it for me and it would be there in 10 days or less and they would call me. After the 10 days went by and nobody called, I decided maybe I should call to see if it had made in yet. I talked to a young man that said he would look into it and call me back in a couple hours. Well, after 2 days of no call backs I called again. This time the guy gave me the same story of he'll look into it and he'll call me in couple hours. I told him I had heard that story before and that I can go somewhere else if they didn't want to do it. He said he will definitely call me back in a couple hours and give me the scoop. After a couple hours, to my surprise, he called me back. He told me they couldn't find one available, which I know is a lie because Cheaper Than Dirt had them available. It seems to me, all they're concerned with is their new shooting range and selling the over priced guns that they have on hand. If they can't make a hundo profit off you, they don't care if you screw off and die. I'm gonna give Palo Outdoors a try. Midwest Shooting Supply just lost a customer. read more

What can I say beside If you want to buy a gun or anything gun related this is the place to go. After having a horrible experience at another gun store in Cedar rapids I walked into MSS fearing the worst. The instant I walked in the door my fears were gone. Second i walk through the doors someone greets me and asks me if they can help me with anything and we begin talking about about some targets that caught my eye. Long story short, no matter if they are selling you nothing, $6 worth of paper targets (in my case my first visit) or $1200 Sig, their customer service is amazing. They will sit there and talk to you about anything in the store (in explicit detail if your really interested) or they will leave you alone to browse depending on what you want. They have a beautiful brand new range, with about 20-25 different rental guns with very reasonable rental prices $10 for first gun $2 each additional gun (except desert Eagle which is $15). The only rules for the range guns is you have to buy their ammo, but you can bring in your own targets (if your shooting your guns you can bring your own ammo). Ammo prices are the best in town, even better than the big box stores like Scheels and Gander. Finally gun prices are less or about equal to the competition. Just an overall great experience going to this store. You just can't beat great prices, huge inventory, beautiful range and amazing people all in one store. As long as I live within driving range of MSS I will continue to buy all my guns/accessories from them. read more

This review is in regards to their shooting range - not the retail side of the business. I arrived early and waited for the store to open. Once in I waited in line to sign-up for the range. For some inexplicable reason, one of the sales people grabs the customer behind me and starts setting him up for range time. Customer was like any other "Joe" from the street, and I was next in line. "First come, first served," is the general rule so I can assume that either they are clueless or they are racist (I am non-white and have gotten strange vibes from Iowa gunners before). Next was orientation during which new comers like me had to sign waivers and agreements for the range rules. Most rules are straight forward and shouldn't surprise a responsible shooter. Considering that the rules covered 4 sheets of paper, I would have appreciated a copy after signing my agreement. Also, noticed that they have a large sign sitting on the ground with some of the essential warnings. Probably would have been more useful to hang-up the sign at the range or somewhere visible. Next entered into the range and immediately noticed that there were no warnings when to put ear protection on. As a matter of fact, no warnings or information is posted anywhere. If it is your first time, you may just walk into the range without ear protection. Felt a little amateurish but it may explain why one of the employees talked in a louder voice (hearing loss will do that to you). Range itself is nicely set-up with new equipment - no complains there. The lighting is excellent and distances are marked out (unfortunately no information is provided anywhere in regards to the distance markers). Blew through over 100 rounds of .45 when one of the employees behind me had a seizure as she noticed that I was using steel case ammo (not to be mistake with steel core). She proceeded to admonish me that steel case ammunition is against the rule. Unfortunately, there were no warnings and the rules were almost 8 pages long and steel casing was not verbally covered during the orientation. She emphasized that it's my responsibility to clean-up the casings. After she cleaned up other shooters brass from the floor without warning (one of the shooters next to me grumbled that he wanted his brass), I figured that she was just too lazy to be bothered to clean-up steel. I am not there to get into an argument so I emptied out the rest of my clip (which gave her another seizure) since I had to do her clean-up job anyway. You may agree or disagree with me, but treating me like you are doing me favor after I have to pay for membership and range time is just plain rude. I might be a shooter, but to the business I am first and foremost a paying customer. The last deal breaker was the lack of proper ventilation. They kept bragging about their ventilation but when we were down to 4 shooters (9 lanes in bay 1), the blue haze accumulate above me and was never sucked out. Noticed that the other bays had the same problem - afterwards I had to drink quite a bit of fluids to get my voice back. Pros: New building and range Nice set-up, plenty of lanes and very clean Sound proofing between sales floor and range is excellent Cons: Lousy customer service (might be racist) Lack of warnings all around Lack of common sense to hang-up warning signs in visible places (large sign sits on the ground in a room) Female employee was inconsiderate (don't expect to pick-up your brass) and extremely lazy Insufficient ventilation Your experience may vary or even be positive; It wasn't for me so I am posting my opinion. To emphasize again, my experience only covers the range - not the retail side. As usual, Caveat Emptor. This review has been posted in Google and Yelp. read more
