He was instrumental in helping me navigate and begin to emerge from the deepest depression I had ever experienced. Following breast cancer, surgery, and treatment, many of the ways I had learned to navigate life simply stopped working. What I hadn't fully understood was that I had spent much of my life developing coping mechanisms to manage experiences and challenges I didn't yet have the language to identify. Dr. Vedantham helped me find that language. His knowledge and understanding of depression, PMDD, complex trauma, and neurodivergence were invaluable. But what distinguishes him, in my experience, is the humanity and compassion he brings to that knowledge. One of the most transformative aspects of my journey was discovering and beginning to understand my own neurodivergence (or, as I prefer to describe it, my neuroexpansiveness) later in life. Suddenly, so many experiences--some stretching back to childhood began to make sense. I found myself reconsidering not only how I had navigated the world, but how I experienced, interpreted, and processed it, both externally and internally. Things I had long perceived as personal shortcomings or simply accepted as being different began to have explanations. Dr. Vedantham helped me explore those discoveries with curiosity, compassion, and without judgment. That understanding didn't change who I was. It changed how I understood who I had always been. I share this because discovering one's neurodivergence later in adulthood is an experience that deserves greater visibility and understanding. Sometimes we spend decades adapting to a world without recognizing just how much adapting we're doing. Having a knowledgeable, compassionate professional who can help make sense of those experiences can be life-changing. I hope that sharing mine might encourage someone else to recognize something in themselves, or help someone better understand and support a loved one navigating a similar discovery. I also remember sharing a particularly painful experience and instinctively minimizing it by saying something along the lines of, "But it could have been worse. I'm still here." He stopped me. He acknowledged just how awful the experience had been and made space for me to acknowledge it, too. As a Black woman accustomed to surviving, enduring, and pushing forward, those moments of being encouraged to pause, recognize, and honor my own experiences were profoundly meaningful. He also celebrated my progress. When I shared an ambitious three-year plan for my future, thoughtfully broken down into six-month and annual goals, he applauded. That encouragement mattered. I was beginning to imagine and intentionally plan a future for myself in ways I never had before. Throughout our work together, Dr. Vedantham helped me better understand myself, recognize patterns, find clarity, and develop a greater sense of possibility for my life. I am still very much on that journey, but I can say with tremendous gratitude that Dr. Vedantham played a pivotal role in changing the trajectory of my life. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

In the middle of that uncertainty and grief, Dr. V showed up with compassion. Even though he was busy, he made the time to speak with me and, more importantly, he continued to check in on me. That level of care is rare and meant more than words can fully express. Beyond being incredibly professional and thorough, he is a genuinely kind and compassionate human being who understands what it means to support someone through pain and uncertainty. I will forever be grateful for his care. I recommend him to the sky and beyond. In a world where compassion can sometimes feel scarce, Dr. Vedantham is truly a godsend.

I tried talk therapy with the doctor who I found too brutal and not effective for me plus the doctor no longer took my insurance. The practice suggested Amy the NP and she and I had a couple of sessions but the patient therapist relationship did not take at that time. I left therapy expecting my primary physician to prescribe the drugs given to me at BTI. She refused saying they were narcotic and addictive. OK, so I stopped all drug therapies for a couple of years. Perhaps there is a time in life when one is more receptive to talk therapy. My PCP would not prescribe the drugs BTI gave me but encouraged me to try to talk to somebody to help with what she saw as major depression. Now my insurance covered BTI and I returned to see Amy. When she clarified that an individual in my particular life situation would be wholly insecure and depressed just as a matter of human need, I realized I'd found someone to whom I could relate. I thrive best with a gentle nurturing therapist and I am very grateful to have found this lovely person who helps me on my journey to understanding why the heck I respond in certain ways and how to make my life better. She is a nurse so she can give practical medical advice. Clearly I am an anxiety ridden individual. After over 60 years of living with myself, one would assume I would have known?? But no, I did not have that perception. Amy suggested attention to breath and nourishment (eat breakfast - thanks Amy) habits to combat being controlled by fear. It seems so simple but nobody, general doctors, psychiatrists or psychologists had ever given me that insight. Yes, early life trauma will do a number on one's emotional and mental health but those issues were decades ago - not completely irrelevant, but after many attempts to fix myself through therapy, I came to Amy's practice, cynical & hopeless. Amy has made my life better. I come to each appointment with issues that we mutually consider; maybe consider further, and end with some resolution. There is a contentment and peace to my life in this therapy. I highly recommend Amy,for those of us who need a sensitive and sensible practitioner. Wishing all who read here, good mental health. Thank you wonderful Amy.

I went here to get diagnosed as having ADHD at 53 y.o. Kaiser would not even assess me, because "I…read morewas not diagnosed by age 12." As a woman, and turning age 12 in 1981, that was nearly impossible, because the belief back then was that it only affects boys. I emailed back and forth with the retired Chair of Behavior Sciences for UC Berkeley (forgot his name) who's specialty is females and ADHD. He and his colleagues recently did a review of all the studies done on Females and ADHD, and they cite the very first small study even asking the question: "Can girls have ADD (what they called it then)?" done in 1979. It was the first study ever to include females. And it was small. The next study addressing the same question was done in 1982, one year after I turned 12. So Kaiser's policy was ageist and sexist--there was literally no way I would have been diagnosed by age 12. And also, research has shown that ADHD exacerbates in perimenopause. So I reached out to this clinic and they accepted me as a patient on a sliding scale. It was affordable. I had a fully psychiatric assessment. The grad student I worked with was great. I was diagnosed as having ADHD, combined type, moderately to severely. Kaiser finally, after me screaming about their sexist/ageist policy did do an assessment. They said I "likely" have it, but it's "inconclusive," because I was not diagnosed by age 12." Ugggg. They just can't let the Sexism go, again. But the diagnosis from this clinic forced them to treat me. So I am very grateful. Thank you!

My OB acted like PPA/PPD was a totally foreign concept to her, would not write a prescription for anything, and had no one to refer me to. (What the hell, Alta Bates?? Where is your postpartum support??) It's been my experience as a woman (I say that because I *think* this is a problem largely faced by women) that doctors mostly react to me with complete skepticism; their responses dripping with condescension. "Oh, you're suffering you say? I'll sit here with a feigned sympathy face for 5 minutes while you explain, and then I'll explain to you, real slow, in words you can understand, how you're overreacting, and how I'm not going to do anything to address your imaginary problem." So I was nervous walking into my appt with Dr. Stanford, afraid I'd be shamed for reaching out for help, just like pretty much every other time I've sought medical care. But Dr. Stanford is great. Totally human. He treats me as though I am totally qualified to asses my own body, my own mind, my own struggles, my own feelings. (What a concept!) He doesn't force a mismatched diagnosis on me just to prove he's the authority. He never dismisses my concerns. He just listens to what I've got going on and how I would like it addressed, and then offers his expertise in choosing an appropriate prescription. Easy. And here I am, totally free from the hell that was postpartum anxiety. Can't recommend him enough.
