We automatically went up the elevator and into the club. The club was pretty happening! It was Monopoly theme night. Everyone has champagne, the DJ was just killing it on the stage. All the girls were dancing, and they had special girls dressing gold dresses walking around too. Fun and games, but then the police showed up. Everything was on hold for 30 minutes while the police officers question everyone whether they were in the country legally or not. So all of the police officers we're standing there making sure that no one leaves the club. And all of the workers and DJs were telling everyone to keep their mouth shut so the police can do their work. Just kept yelling at us! Then the police finish their job, and I guess they didn't find anyone that were illegal, so they left. Then everything went back to normal, we started all dancing and drinking again. It was a pretty crazy night, and I had to make sure that I leave by certain time so I can catch the train back to the hotel. Fun club, but I think it would be expensive to go by myself or with a group. And I don't really want to wait in line.

I had no serious intention of hitting much of anything up in this area, but some bouncers outside grabbed us and told us to head up the elevator and have a look. It was early and we chilled in the Hip hop room upstairs. Music was on point and it was a fun crowd and the bartenders worked fast. It smoked the other club I stopped by last trip Ce La Vi which by comparison was much more touristy and contrived. I think it is somewhat members only, with Memberships running around 30,000 HKD. Once this place started going, after a few fun hours in the hip hop room, the main room was packed, sound system was solid. Much more bottle centric then maybe I would have liked but still nice. Reminds me of another favorite of mine, Elektro in Taipei. I'm in HK again in May. I'm sure I'll run my delegation through here Mose likely. I'm impressed.

The bar scene along Wyndham is already competitive enough as it is, so Tonic might serve as a good spot to score a few drinks before moving on. Happy Hour is the best time to enjoy 1/2 off all drinks and it's before the bouncers come rolling in. There is no cover charge either, until later in the night(s) when the place goes from chill to kill (me). Service also falls into the "your mileage may vary" category, as I've encountered some super friendly hostesses and solid bartenders vs DBag bouncers and apathetic managers. They will on certain nights employ a decent DJ, and while the space feels clubby at times, it conflicts with the loungey vibe. Drinks like anywhere along Wyndham are pricey. Thank goodness they take credit card, but don't go overboard with the bottle service either. It really boils down to which identity one wants to align with: Dragon-I the restaurant or Dragon-I the LKF club. Regarding the former, Dragon-I features an interesting mix of Asian fusion dishes that would make it one of the more higher end choices in Central. Many flock here for their lunch deal, which is an all you can eat affair of nearly 30 Dim Sum dishes. The quality is rather decent, if not pretty good. Their spread feels more western than it does a traditional take on the cuisine, but at $228HKD a person, one could certainly do some damage by playing high afternoon glutton. Then there is the other side, the considerably darker (and louder) one in Dragon-I the nightclub. There are countless tales of douchebaggery and bouncer attitude but the same story could be told at virtually any of the major clubs both past and present. The music varies from eye rolling house music to occasional clusters of quality club hip hop music. Some visiting DJs will put on quite the show, but the regular house DJs are nothing to get amped about. The setup is really advantageous for bottle service folks, which is the only way I've really been acquainted here. Just because some drunkards and I have gone that route doesn't mean our experience has been completely ideal: the cocktail waitresses aren't serving us and the rest of the staff (especially Summer!) have a bit of an attitude at times. I wish they would police the smokers and keep the outsiders from stumbling into table service areas. Whether it's food or nightlife, Dragon-I serves to be an interesting option for all who find themselves along the madness of Wyndham. The outcome is extremely predictable, to which even tossing around a good bit of $$$ doesn't really affect much. I'm indifferent about this place, but I am never opposed to going either. Pretension is a turn off, but like anything in this realm, service is everything.

A touch of Irish conviviality combined with the vivacious Lan Kwai Fong energy, Rula Bula is one of the more multifaceted venues in the hood. With it's wide interior and open layout, it is an easy option for large groups. The dance floor is solid in the wee hours, even if the DJ isn't always good at revving up the crowd. There is a nice lounge space around the corner from the bar and the front area is perfecting for observing the drunken spirits wandering on Lan Kwai Fong street. The bar itself isn't especially impressive, but it's nothing short of lively, especially on the weekends. On those nights the bar is stacked with bartenders who are furiously mixing drinks left and right. The cocktails lack sophistication (read: slightly watered down) but stick with simple concoctions and the options will fare much better. Prices aren't cheap in this neck of the woods, but that is to be expected in LKF country. I usually end up purchasing enough to merit a spin on their wheel, which will ultimately earn myself or my group a free drink of some kind. While I haven't yet had to pay cover, I have seen some well dressed bouncers at the door lately. I am usually here with good company and less about the drinks / music. The bonuses are the ventilation (which is quite good for a place with open windows) and the lesser tendency of dbaggery. In the end, this place serves as a pseudo after hours destination for many LKF'ers, and for that, Rula Bula is a solid spot to keep the night going.

It started off as a venue to go and meet all you friend groups in the wee hours of the morning. It made sense because of the open spaced design of the place, the good music, and the affordable drinks. Basically the place is a giant square with a bar, some benches and a DJ booth. Half of it is used for sitting/not dancing while the other half is for those that can't hold back from the rhythm of the night. That's a massive advantage in LKF where every other bar is split up into sections the size of a closest interlinked with shoulder-width corridors. I enjoy it there, even if it is a bit on the crowded side, it's easy enough to pop out onto LKF's streets for a bit of "fresh" air. What you may not know about Rula Bula is the fact that it's also a great place to go during the day. By day I mean 5 and onwards. At around this time it's transformed from a sea of bodies, flashing lights and dark corners to a well lit, spacious, bar perfect to hang out at after work with a couple of friends. The giant open windows, the wooden benches, and the overall decor of the place give you the feel that you are on a terrace somewhere - except with a constant stream of taxis driving by. It's the perfect place to lose track of time, a sure sign that Rula Bula is doing something right. If you haven't been to Rula Bula between 5pm and 7pm I'd suggest giving it a visit. You can return later on in the night nothing with full certainty that some you know will be there, slouched in the corner or killing it on the dance floor.

And Tasmania was the favorite after bar hopping. Tasmania plays loud Western music too. Yes, some hip hop but mainly pop. We were greeted at the door by security and the hostess who took us upstairs. A bit on the dark side, but beautiful lighting very fitting to its ambiance. There was two bars, couches, and ping pong tables! Cool... I wanted to play, but the wait was long. Fine, we sat on the couch and got table service. The drinks menu wasn't huge, but good enough. A good variety of mixed cocktails. I had my Moscow Mule. A little weak on the alcohol side, as it was mostly ice and ginger soda. Oh well, it's good to stay sober though as we just got off the plane and pretty much went straight to dinner then the bars with our local friends. Yes, we checked into our Airbnb prior. Lol. I like Tasmania. A very classy environment minus the noisy crowds. The drinks was a bit weak, but still had a wonderful time soaking it in with people there. And Tazmania is always around for you. In the crazier years, I used to come here often. Like Mondays. And Thursdays (for the ping pong every Tue/Thu), and then Fridays and maybe Saturdays too. It's always a good "buffer zone" after dinner and before you go somewhere else. It's never too quiet. Well on a Monday night it can be quiet but hey, you have the whole pool table for yourself. And it's never too crowded. They'd even raise one of the pool table overhead to spare some space for guests. You come early at 6:30pm, you can grab some of their feed buffet finger food. If you come later (like after 1am), you can just treat this place as your yet another club and pop some champagne. It's definitely on the higher end of price tag. But it's a good strategy to keep the kids away, really. The only downfall is it closes "early" at 3am even on weekends. There were a couple of times, again, in the crazier years, where girls would check their bags to the cloakroom and forgot to get it back, when they wandered off to some other bars/clubs till a bit too late.
