Experienced GriffonRawl, Combat Sports and Fitness for the first time last Friday for a Womens…read moreAwareness & Self Defense Clinic. Two words: extremely impressed. I knew nothing about the facility or what to expect; a friend had posted the clinic information on Facebook and I thought it would be something worth while to try out. Boy am I glad I did! The owner Jason reached out and answered all of my questions in regards to signing up for the class in an extremely timely manner, and offered to provide additional assistance in case I had any problems. I didn't have any problems, it was a smooth process signing up and paying for the class and I received a quick confirmation and a reminder the day before. They are extremely organized and informative when it comes to "newbies". Upon entering the gym I was immediately greeted and was directed on what to do to sign in and prep for the clinic I signed up for. To be acknowledged that fast in a room full of ladies coming in for the class is quite impressive. I immediately felt welcome (considering my own feeling of intimidation because I was in a MMA gym). Jason was there checking people in and providing proper paperwork to fill out for the clinic and the other staff members were present to provide assistance if needed. Everyone was super welcoming and kind and I quickly became comfortable in the setting I was in. As mentioned earlier, I signed up for the Womens Awareness & Self Defense Clinic. End result? I was not disappointed! I cant even begin to describe how well the clinic was presented. A former Seattle Police Department patrolman/detective, and current owner of Hope Athletic Training Institute, partook to discuss the concept of situational awareness. He provided a ton on information and shared real-life examples. His portion of the clinic really opened my eyes to knowing the importance of always being aware and decisive if ever needed. The second part of the clinic was live hand to hand self defense instruction taught by the owner of Krav Maga Cleveland. Of course he also stressed the importance of situational awareness first and if ever needed, he taught through example, ways in which to respond if a physical attack occurs. Jason (owner of GriffonRawl) also participated in the clinic and chimed in key points as they were being discussed. He evaluated the hand to hand defense as it was being practiced and focused on proper technique and stressing quality over quantity. He shared "key points" that would be handy to know if ever in a physical situation and stressed the importance of making yourself aware by watching some self defense videos on youtube etc. Extremely helpful and knowledgeable and went above and beyond what I ever expected. In conclusion, if I had to rate GriffonRawl on a 0-5 star scale, I'd say 10! I truly enjoyed myself that night and was wowed by the level of professionalism from the owner and staff and cleanliness and set up of the gym. Jason, you have great things going on a GriffonRawl. Bravo! Looking forward to the next one!!!

I know this review will sound a little harsh, but…read more... I am a paying member of the YMCA. I don't get an income discount, I don't get a work discount, I just wanted a nice gym membership and so the Y was the first place I thought of. I know they are also a charitable organization and bless them for that...however at the downtown YMCA they allow people from a rehab across the street to shower and use the facilities. They do the same for several homeless shelters, etc. No one on the YMCA staff checks on these people. Once they are in the building, they're not just showering and leaving, they hanging out, sleeping in corners, and so on. I have been trying to add some weight training to my workout and a man was asleep on a free weight bench. He was not wearing workout clothes or anything you would wear to the gym to work out it. Eventually a YMCA worker came and woke him up and asked him to leave after I approached the front desk about this. I guess my problem here is that I was unaware that I was walking around in a building with drug addicts and homeless people. My daughter's hoodie was stolen off a machine. No big deal I guess. Frankly when you pay $50/month for a gym membership you just assume the people around you are all paying for the same service. That being said, I wouldn't be on guard for someone who pays for a membership to steal my daughter's sweatshirt. That's my own mistake for 'assuming', but until I asked about the man sleeping on the weight bench I had no idea that charities gave out shower passes to drug addicts and homeless people that they would be using the same locker rooms without ANY SUPERVISION or tracking from YMCA staff. Again I take no issues with their charity work and applaud them for doing it, I just think the average person who pays a fair amount of cash for a gym membership to a place with nice facilities does not automatically guard their belongings or themselves in the same manner you would as if you were walking down the street in an unsavory neighborhood. Right now it was only my daughter's sweatshirt. It could have been her phone, or her wallet. Yes they have free lock boxes at the front desk, but kids have come in with compact bolt cutters and cut her lock right off in the locker room. So even when you lock your stuff it could get stolen. The police don't care unless it's something like $50 or more. Appearances can be deceiving, and I would probably have signed up for a membership anyway, but a heads up about the company they keep would have been nice.

Nice facility located in downtown Erie,PA. The Avalon Hotel across the street offers free passes…read morefor guests. The staff was friendly and the equipment looked to be in good shape. The facility has three floors that are easily accessible by elevator or by stairs. They also offer a variety of classes from Body Pump to Zumba. I began my visit there with a private cardio session in a separate air conditioned room offered for those who may not feel comfortable exercising in an open space. I then moved the gym to do more cardio and ended my workout in the Rick Burr room where I did some ab work. I enjoyed my visit there and would recommend this facility for those visiting the downtown Erie area.
