Used google translate to read reviews in French from different sites. Made reservation and we were the first customers that night. They have good selection of local wines at reasonable price. I really enjoyed their wine. Course meal is 27€ per person including appetizer, main and desert. Since I couldn't pick what I wanted, they decided to give me small potion of everything. Everything I ate was so good, no wonder why they are so popular among locals. Yes this place is located in the middle of residential area, you need to know it's here to come here. Walking distance from the Lyon train station. One lady spoke excellent English and it was so helpful and she assisted our table so well. Highly recommend for great dinner at a such a reasonable price. My love for Lyon food continues...

Just clicked the link to their website in the yelp app and filled out the reservation info. After a long day of flying, exploring Paris, and taking the high speed train, I was hungry. I was looking for a good place that I could eat by myself. This place was a short walk from the train station (I wheeled my luggage). I chose to eat outside so it wouldn't be awkward inside with my giant suitcase. Even though I made my reservation for 830pm, they seated me at 8pm when I arrived. I chose 1 of each of the categories on the menu. To my surprise the serve brought me a declious cucumber salad as an amuse bouche.

After…read moreseeing a fellow veg rave about this place online, I realized it was just down the street from my house and decided to give it a shot. I went in for lunch on a weekday with the baby (and the stroller) and asked the friendly waiter if they had a vegetarian plate (because I wasn't 100% convinced.) He assured me that yes, they did, and would I like to sit at a table outside? Why yes, thank you. I sat. After almost no time at all (which was good, because the wee one was getting a bit fussy), the waiter brought me a carafe of water and the vegetarian plat du jour. I was blown away. (See the picture I posted.) Marinated cucumber and onion, fresh greens in a light dressing, roasted eggplant (cold), grated carrots, lentil salad, some sort of vegetable mini frittata, and a vegetable tart. It was all fresh and flavourful. My only complaint was the vegetable tart had a cheese on it that was a bit too stinky for my silly American taste. Not a big deal - I ate it anyway. And the whole thing only cost me 10 euros! A steal. Oh, a word of advice. If you're going to sit outside, make sure to sit under the awning because one of the upstairs neighbors got a little over-zealous while watering his/her plants and it poured down all over me, the stroller, and the baby. (Totally not the cafe's fault. Just a tip!)

It's in Guillotiere, right over the bridge, so also convenient if you've been running (or strolling, if you're me) along the Rhone beforehand and want a quick pick-me-up. They have an unassuming but decent selection of snacks and beer, as well as board games that you can play at your table. (I flattened my opponent in checkers, but wasn't so lucky with chess...) Worth a visit.

Search narrowed down to three locations and we settled on La Mere Jean. A friendly staff named Georgia took the time to translate every item on the French menu for us six in English. I can only speak for the dishes in had tried. The Lyonaise salad was very tasty, the bacon was thick diced pieces crispy and melt in your mouth. You can't be afraid of a bit of fat as it's what makes it so good. I had the cold appetizer mix plate of meat and lentils. I felt it was to unlock your senses with different types of texture pleasure in the mouth than going for a flavour palette. The Quenelle was my main. It was an absolute unique delight with the fluffy and spongy texture smoothered with the seafood cream sauce with potato gratin. It's a rich heavy dish and hits you when you least expect it. Tried a piece of marinated fish that was also a suprise to the pallette. The texture and flavour was like smoked ham than eating fish and very tasty. Dessert was the traditional red praline tart. My mind kept getting fooled with it being red but it's not cherry, not strawberry, just sweet praline. All paired with a Cote du Rhone wine. It is one of those meals you have long memories of as it's so different to N.A. dishes. All in all our group was very happy to have tried the food, appreciate the reviews/photos and most of all thank the friendly staff at la Mere Jean to make it a wonderful experience as we had no idea what we were going eat in Lyon but wanted something local.

However I knew it would not be my only bouchon dinner after trying the typical dishes of eggs in red wine sauce and fish dumplings. I had never had these food before but I know how to cook so I knew something was off. The red wine sauce was thin and watery and the fish dumplings dense and pale. It was a Monday evening so perhaps the best chef had the night off. The wine was very good and the atmosphere was perfectly lyonnaise.

We were seated in one of the smaller dining rooms with just four tables for two, which made the experience feel intimate and special. The décor was understated, elegant, and timeless, allowing the food to take center stage. Unfortunately, we weren't very hungry that evening, so we ordered less than we normally would have. Even so, every dish was exceptional. The flavors were beautifully balanced, and the sauces in particular were extraordinary. This meal gave me an entirely new appreciation for French cuisine and the artistry behind its classic techniques. This is certainly a special-occasion restaurant, but it's more than just dinner...it's a chance to experience a piece of culinary history. Founded by the legendary Eugénie Brazier, whose influence shaped generations of France's greatest chefs, the restaurant carries on an extraordinary legacy while remaining approachable and gracious. It isn't inexpensive, but for the quality of the food, the impeccable service, and the opportunity to dine at such a historic and influential restaurant, it was absolutely worth the experience.

Aux Trois Maries was up to the challenge. My chéri had the most beautiful salade lyonnaise I've ever seen and I had a perfectly cooked steak with sauce I wanted to drink. In French, bien sûr. I'm not sure what the stars and Michelin ratings are on the door of the Potager des Halles have to do with it or what the deluded positive reviews are all about....but my husband and two sons and I arrived very hungry after the Fourvière. And all I can be sure of is after waiting a while for water... they took a bunch of stuff out of the compost and put it on four plates and called it salade! Some slimy smoked salmon, dried prosciutto, some over cooked and old salmon salad with too much mayo, gray avocado, some wilty rancid greens, some watery mozzarella and some old ratatouille that was meant to be thrown to be thrown out last week...with pine nuts. All piled on a plate. Odd combination. No one inside seemed to be working at all. Except one slightly strange waitress. I am an autoimmune type one diabetic, and when I pulled my pen to give myself some insulin, which I needed to do at the table as it seemed we couldn't go inside (that part was confusing; the doors had tables in front of them and no one inside) the waitress became so fascinated she asked me several times if I was a diabetic or what was I going to give myself? I had my two young sons with me and I must admit I was baffled--did she think I was shooting heroin at lunch? Or did she hope I was shooting heroin and want me to offer her some? The rest of the lunch was misery, and she was snarky...it was un désastre!
