I met people from all over the world in this one place. Welly, one of the workers here, was an amazing employee who brought such fun events to the guests who stayed here. Two of the nights he guided a bunch of people from the hostel to a club in Paris and I cannot believe how much fun I had. He was very friendly and helpful whenever I needed recommendations for anything. There was always something happening every night, whether it was wine and cheese night or a beer pong competition or going out with other people from the hostel. I have made lifelong friends here. The place was a very clean stay and it was my first time doing a co-ed room so I was a bit scared but everyone was so friendly and respectful of each others spaces. When I go back to Paris, I will definitely be staying here again. I have told all of my friends and family about it and I'm so excited for when I come next!!!!!!!! I've read some pretty concerning reviews before coming here and thought the worst but was glad to find out that it was a decent hostel in an unassuming neighborhood, with reasonable amenities, and everything you need in shouting distance. The Generator is located in a neighborhood in the 10th that I'd not had the pleasure of going to in my 10 years visiting France, but once I'd gotten used to it- it was a nice calm little place. The neighborhood surrounding the Generator heading into the 19th though - isn't safe for young or new travelers. Hoards of homeless people are littered under the bridge, and it can be a pretty chaotic neighborhood. The people themselves are pleasant enough, just stay to yourself. The drinks were heavy, the bar downstairs was nice and lively. The shower rooms, toilets, and beds were what you can expect from a constantly rotating line of people. It's not top notch, it's not bottom rung. The cleaning staff was in daily, maintenance came directly both times I requested (for the shower, and a clogged toilet). The maintenance crew for the toilet came a total of 4 times. I stayed in a room of 8, Most of the ladies were great, but some need reminders when checking in about how to be kind in a large hostel room. Some came in at 2a when I needed to rise at 5a and made a tremendous amount of noise. Be mindful when booking, or reviewing that you're staying in a hostel with an AMAZING amount of turn over, they may need more staff, but what they do have is keeping up quite well.

Once you have entered, the place is pretty cozy and contemporary for what it is. The front desk receptionist, named Mike, helped us out aplenty with last minute room accommodations and adjustments to safety locks just in case you have forgotten what number it is for your lock (such as myself)! Thank goodness for backups! The Wi-Fi here works splendidly well and there are complimentary breakfasts in the mornings! You can cook your own meals in the kitchen and lounge area! Pretty cool for a hostel! I brought a huge luggage with me for the Europe trip and I like how they don't make you change rooms every night. It was such a hassle to move rooms every night in each hostel I have stayed in so far besides The Loft! The Metro is conveniently located a few blocks away from this place, which makes everything very commutable. I enjoyed my stay here entirely!

After looking at all…read moreof the reviews on HostelWorld for the available hostels at the time for Paris, we decided on The Loft since it was newer and had lockers. The hostel is about a 5-10 minute walk from the Belleville metro stop on Line 11. It is a little far away from everything else in Paris (you have to switch at least once on the metro). But the hostel itself isn't too far from the metro, which is nice. If you take the Rue de Belleville exit, hang a left and go up the hill til you hit rue de Julien Lacroix. Turn right and walk about 1.5 blocks. You'll notice it's located in an Asian community. The lobby area has several computers that are free to use, brochures for things to do around Paris, a small indoor common area with free coffee/tea, small kitchen and fridges, and a small outdoor patio with tables and chairs. This hostel does have some "curfew hours" (i.e. the patio closes at a certain time so that anyone trying to sleep can). You can also buy drinks (beers, wine, sodas, water, etc.) from the front desk. I believe there was also a free breakfast, but I was never awake early enough to take advantage of this. The rooms themselves are nice. There is no elevator here btw. We stayed in a 6-bed mixed dorm. There are small lockers that fit our day backpacks. You have to insert 50 cents to lock it (it's a 4 digit combination lock), but you get back your 50 cents when you unlock it. There were plenty of outlets in the room. I think I saw 2 by the beds, 2 by the door and 1 in the bathroom. And speaking of bathrooms, there is an attached one with a sink, toilet, and shower. It's a newer hostel so everything still looks new! There's also a laundry room for all of you backpackers who need to wash some stuff. And my favorite thing the hostel offers is.... free luggage storage. You can store your bags in their locked luggage room for free before you check in (if you get there before check-in time) and after you check out. Not very many hostels offer this, so we definitely took advantage of this on our last day before heading to our next stop of our trip. The staff working here are all friendly and helpful. If you need help finding something on the map, which metro lines to take, or even just wanted to know where affordable shopping was (Paris gets expensive!), they're able to answer all of your questions! Last but not least, free WiFi. Sure, most hostels offer this. But most hostels' free WiFi's are spotty at best. The WiFi offered here was fast and worked in the rooms as well as the common areas. So overall I would have given this hostel 5 stars, but deducted 1 star for the location. It takes awhile on the metro to get to different places and if you're trying to go out at night, there aren't that many cafes/bars open around here.

What they don't tell you is that there is a sports bar on the first floor with nightly live music, so expect some noise. The higher floors don't hear it as much, so that's a benefit of being upstairs. We had a rash of loud screaming Italian preteens on our floor but one word to front desk and it stopped cold. Truly top notch security, have to badge in through many doors and elevator, plus security personnel at the entrance. Decent breakfast which is free depending on room price and how you book.

Some are so lazy that they dont like assisting guests. Lots of seating areas but a lack of charging stations. Brochures and magazines also a library with everything you need to know about Paris, France and visitor stuff. The electronic Welcome and tourist machine was broken. The lobby is broken down into several areas: library area, table top game area, couch area, bar area, visitor area with magazines and toiletry vending machine (toothbrushes, locks for lockers, etc.). Next to the game area there is the storage area which was DISGUSTING!!!! Old bags, dirty dried rags littered the floor, broken wood which used to shelving bases are broken and littered the area. Bags which appeared to have bern left behind were stored there. Oversized luggage was placed everywhere. There are oversized coin lockers and oversized lockers for storing luggage (so you who purchased your own locker can use). ANNOUNCEMENT BOARD: At the desk on the wall is a list of group activities. You can purchase River Seine and other tours for as low as 5.50€. I did and it was fun! I also noticed the FREE WALKING TOURs brochure (the pink vest folks). BAR/PATIO DECK: they have a full service bar. There is an outdoor patio deck. It was full of folks during happy hour and filthy with cigarette butts in everything except the butt container! The patio furniture is badly worn. RESTAURANT/BREAKFAST: Once gone..its gone folks. cafeteria style dining where you can purchase meals. Complimentary Breakfast is also done here. **I got stuck (locked) in a restroom and barely missed the food. (the desk attendant had to break the lock to get me out)!!! Anyway, what I saw of what was left for breakfast. Soft Croissants, butter, preserves, milk, water and carafes of OJ. KITCHEN: DISGUSTING! PIG STYE! Guests have to take care of this area because NO STAFF CLEANS this area!!!! So, there were crumbs, overflowing small trash cans. Dirty dishes. Food particles on tables, counter topes, on and in the microwave. The sinks were full. There are 2 European refrigerators and one was fully broken with packed to the brim rottening food and liquids pouring out of it. The other was working and also packed to capacity. There is no labeling system. This had a small freezer (i believe) but it was also jammed packed. ACCOMMODATIONS: When you go into the room...to turn on the lights...SLIDE your room key into the pocket on the wall and the lights and electricity will work. This includes the lights and electricity outlets at ALL the beds and the shower area. The showers are older and stay on for 5 seconds intervals once you push it. To conserve water! The A/C barely worked. The windows are sealed shut. The room was clean. TOURS/PASSES: Are sold at the desk!! This building has conference rooms and they were in use when I arrived. There are 2 vending machines in the basement area hallway. In the hallway is a model of the building and a high table top with chairs for relaxing. Looks like you canngo outside to the garden area from here but I dared not to so I wouldnt get locked out and have to find my way back up to the main entrance. There is a grocery store across the street which is were I purchased my meals and my European Flat Iron (for my hair). The staff was very friendly and the men flirtatious yet funny. ATTACHED RETAIL: Directly attached to the building is a 1. "home goods" type store with trinkets for home and office. 2. Next to that a hip/bar restaurant with musicians, 3. All of the food establishments have cute outdoor seating areas and at night it was bustling. The hip area...some skateboarders were outside..nanny's were pushing strollers during work hours. STREET: ***One way street which my Uber/Lyft drivers kept getting messed up on trying to find a way to get me to the building!!!*** NEIGHBORHOOD: I presume this to be a working class shabby chic area. But it was more like regentrification is trying to happen in this area. The room had two large floor-to-ceiling windows that opened to the street and provided a nice breeze on the summer evenings. The showers were available down the hall but it wasn't a problem. We got a group rate, but for individuals it's 30€ a night which is pretty much a steal for the location. The hostel has a pretty large eating area and serves a free breakfast in the morning--cereal, yogurt, bagels, muffins, coffee, tea, juice, milk, fruit, and more. This place is simple and doesn't have a lot of extras, but for the price and location it's a perfect jumping-off point to sightsee in Paris.
