This is a monument to the Protestant Reformation with sculptures and reliefs depicting chief historic figures. If you are not familiar with John Calvin, seeing his statue - towering with his cold, stoic, judgmental stare puts the St Pierre Cathedral in Old Town as well as much of Geneva into perspective. Calvin brings to mind the strict enforcement of moralist behavior, church order, and discipline. All citizens' moral conduct would be appraised at the risk of personal freedom. I am not sure why this monument is constructed on the walls of a University, but perhaps it is to emphasize new ways of thought. I associate university and education with openness, humanism, and warmth. Still, odd, and cold, this monument will have you longing for Rome or at least Luzern. read more
