I couldn't help myself. Another dinner here was too good to pass up…read more This time I had a super fresh tomato salad that had the most crisp, green bib lettuce on top with a very light, and refreshing vinaigrette. Then the main course... oh man. I had the veal, which I never eat veal, bit it was coated in a balsamic reduction, and honey. HONEY. on steak. seriously. The veal was extremely fresh, and totally tender. The honey and the balsamic were a sweet, and surprising delight. It came with fries which were piping hot, and cut thick. For dessert I tried the hazelnut this time, and was not disappointed. 1 extra euro for whipped cream... ;) oh could this be my favorite place in Houlgate? Maybe baby... its totally great, and the service each time has been phenomenal. I sat outside and there were little heaters above my head... it kind of made me feel like I was in a tanning bed, but without them I would have had to move inside to finish my supper. :)

A casino? On the beach? All signs point to yes…read more Well initially the first sign I saw was for an ABBA tribute band. Gambling, beach, france and ABBA?! What else could a girl like me ask for? So on my first night in Houlgate I was greeted by the french singers, singing english songs, penned by non english speaking swedish popstars. Yes that juuuust happened! The casino is what I would call quaint- Slots, blackjack, and a really weird form of roulette. They call it La Boule, and I don't really understand it. I know that I put some euros down and walked away with 20 more... enough for me to walk away. lol. I find it interesting to watch the french gamble. They are very reserved about it. No high fives, no jumping with enthusiasm. They win, they continue. They lose, they continue. There's no expression here. When I won and yelped out loud- everyone looked at me like I was nuts. And maybe I am, but I understand what you're saying silly french lady, and I will also laugh at the absurdity. Theres also a restaurant/brasserie attached (bar brasserie). I didn't eat there, but when I popped my head in it was swimming with patrons. After a whirlwind night, I walked out into the cool ocean, breeze, and took a stroll home along the empty, quiet beach. A nice change of pace from the action of a casino, and great way to end my first night in Houlgate.

I dont understand how a business expects us to enjoy our food, when the waiter is rolling his eyes at you, while you try to make sense of what the translated menu says. Overall, it had delicious food- other than the dry steak, and poor attitude.
Amazing experience in an unforgettable setting…read more Atmosphere/decor: Nearly identical to the black and white photos of yesteryear, this historic setting takes you back to a different time while holding an elegant and special vibe. The huge ceilings, original embossments and mouldings are gorgeous. The large windows provide a great view of the sea and boardwalk. Unfortunately it was a big humid and warm in the room but expectable with the style and culture of the place. Everyone gets seated with a view. Service: lovely old-school white glove experience. Attentive, professional, and polite. The servers have typical non-disturbing stance of European restaurants with the added attentiveness one expects of fine dining. Food: the 3-course meal was delicious and beautifully plated. Small but flavorful portions. The crab starter was one of the most gorgeous plantings I have ever seen. Unfortunately the taste was somewhat bland and did not accentuate the crab. Some might call it delicate but I think that would be a scapegoat. The lamb two ways was magnificent. I asked for medium rare and both pieces were amongst the best lamb I've had of my life. Savory, just ever so gamey, and delicates salted. The chocolate coconut dessert dish was to die for -- decadent but smooth and creamy on the tongue with a nice counterbalance or coconut flavors--coconut can often be too underwhelming or overwhelming and they balanced the presence perfectly. One of my companions had the sole (Prousts favorite) and said it was the best he'd ever had. Unfortunately the sole does not come on the 3-course menu option (understandably) and necessitates ordering other dishes separately/individually. The chariot of cheese (hah! Bravo!) allowed an unlimited amount nearly 15 local and regional cheeses. Drinks: Impressive menu of mostly French wines. Luckily a few options of by the glass purchase for those of us whose companies couldn't/don't drink. Cocktail list is nice as well as apertifs and digestifs. Pricing: the 3-course meal is a good deal in the 75-100 euro range. Drink pricing was expectable for the scale of the restaurant. Very reasonable pricing for such fine dining and service. $350 Euro for 4 people with only two of us having by the glass drinks. I recommend all try it who can and would absolutely return--even dine multiple times during a stay at the Grand Hotel if I could visit.
