Leonards Music is fantastic. Mr. Mike Leonard was recommended to me by a Berkley Music School professor for a review and repair as needed of my 1934 Cohn tenor sax. When several years later it needed the neck cork replaced they did it in 20 minutes while I waited for a ridiculously low fee, no appointment required. The staff is warm and friendly on the phone and in person. The facility is easy to get to and no issues with parking. Elsa Leonards Music is great. I bought my used Buffet B-flat clarinet from them and really count on Mike fixing any problem that comes up. Mike has fixed problems with the clarinet quickly. My clarinet has been working well for some time even though it is a second-hand instrument. We rented-to-own a trumpet for our son and the entire experience was fantastic. Reasonable price for the rental, and in our town there was free pickup/delivery at our school for repairs. First of all I strongly suggest that you should avoid doing business with them. Here is my experience: This year my wife rented a violin for my daughter from Leonards Music and paid insurance. During her school music class the bow was broken under normal usage. My wife took it to the shop and they said the insurance doesn't cover bow so she paid for a replacement. When she got back and told me this, we looked at the insurance agreement carefully and it does for sure cover the bow. My wife called the shop saying the insurance should cover for the bow and this time they said the bow was broken because of over tightening. It's abuse or neglect from the customer and not covered by the insurance. My wife explained to them that my daughter is very careful and she has been playing violin for more than 2 years that she does not over tighten the bow. Shop manager simply said that this kind of broken can only be caused by over tightening and is not covered. It doesn't make sense to me that they sell insurance and later refuse to cover the damage by just saying it is caused by consumer's mis-usage. read more

I contacted this company, since I'm interested in getting my saxophone's pads replaced. I was surprised that they would not tell me how much they charge for this service, nor would they tell me what they've charged previous customers that have had similar work done. Instead they told me that I could make an appointment in two weeks, drop my saxophone off, and they'd then get back in touch with me on how much they'd charge me. I found this surprising, since other company's I've contacted were able to give me price ranges and have conversations with me about what certain types of work would cost. My conversation with Leonard's Music just led me to believe that they didn't really have a strong knowledge base or expertise in instrument repair. I'm sure these guys are a fine music store and have decent rentals. But if you're looking to get something repaired, I'd go to a shop that can have a knowledgeable conversation with you about the work you need to have done. read more

They seem more invested in selling instruments and rentals versus doing repairs. I had dropped off my daughter's flute to be repaired almost 5 months ago. After 6 phone calls, and no return messages, or any repairs, I picked it up today to take it some place else. This complete lack of service or courtesy occurred even after I spent a great deal of money on an upgrade flute from them 4 months ago! Their excuse - "Too busy" (to even take my phone calls, I guess!"). read more

We've been long time customers here. Recently we got a brand new rental instrument for a beginner student. It's been less than one month of lessons and very minimum practice. But the instrument has to be sent in for repairs already twice. I don't know anything about these instruments but my child's teacher would tell me the issues and we send it in for repairs. I have asked if the store would exchange another instrument for us but was given the generic response- says their technician will have to evaluate it and see if it's something they can try to fix. To be honest at this point I don't trust their technicians anymore. Also, this is an over couple of grands' worth brand new instrument! I chose the "rent new" option. As a brand new instrument that we barely put any practice on, it just doesn't make sense our teacher would find so many things wrong with it! This is definitely a defective instrument that the store should be more responsible to take care of. We bought our previous child's rental after renting it for less than a year. For this rental....If we can't get this exchanged we need to take our business somewhere else. I can't imagine what problems will appear. read more
