    The Villain
    Jeremy B.

This is a story of lamentable loss followed by radiant redemption. As a gentleman that wears a 7 3/4 size hat, my options for eyewear are lilliputian to say the least. A couple of years ago, I discovered that I was able to put prescription lenses into my oversized sunglasses. This transformed my appearance from that of a myopic bureaucrat to that of someone a bit more fashionable. Yesterday, my enthusiastic yet villainous 75-pound Tamaskan decided to give me an acrobatic head butt while exiting the vehicle. My gigantic skull rang like a bell as I reeled back; the world around me changed to a melange of blurred lines, vague suggestions of color, and an impression of my glasses resting on the floor mat adjacent to the passenger seat. Devastated, I picked up my splintered specs: the left arm had snapped off the frame, the small plastic pin loops mulched like last week's yard trimmings. Through tremendous ocular difficulty, I was able to render my glasses "wearable" with liberal applications of packing tape and colorful verbiage. At that point, my wife suggested that I go to LensCrafters at Desert Ridge. I had another pair of sunglasses, and was optimistic that some form of lens transplantation could take place. I called, and spoke with a wonderful lady who said they could indeed do what was required, and that it would take less than 5 minutes. Thrilled, the next day I headed over during my lunch break. After telling the gentleman behind the counter the details of my eyewear entanglement, the lady that I spoke with over the phone remembered our phone conversation, and also came over to help. For less than five minutes, I sat in the well-appointed and spotlessly clean showroom trying to read an article on my phone. Then my "new" pair of glasses were handed to me, informing me that there was no charge for the work. Shocked, I tried to tip them, but they would not accept. I thanked them profusely, and walked back outside - vision and dignity restored. --- My wife and daughters have been coming here for the past three years, getting eye exams, and buying their glasses. I've always been impressed with how clean the store is, as well as the friendliness and competence of everyone that works there. They have gained me as a customer as well.

Their scheduling website drop-down list shows BCBS of Illinois as an accepted insurance provider.

Add things that are not required or covered by insurance in order to boost profits. Unethical as hell

The attitudes and comments were uncalled for. Apparently I'm supposed to know when THEY require me to fill out paperwork. The workers were even rude to each other. The male worker acted like I offended him by saying I wasn't going to look at glasses with him. Doc handed him my prescription and said he's all set, he proceeded to say new prescription? I said yes. He's like want to look at new frames? I said no thank you, he just stood there and stared at me then proceeds to say "you just said yes." I'm like sorry didn't know "new prescription?" Meant hey let's buy some new glasses today. He proceeds to just tell me what I owe for the day, "enter your pin" hands me my receipt and that's it. Like gee, sorry I ruined your day.. I hope this place gets a new office staff soon. I know we don't come here for friends, but it should be a little bit friendlier. I've been coming here 9 years.. and may move on after this experience to be honest

One of the staff opened the door for all those waiting 15 minutes before their opening hour. That was nice! They have a very busy business. There are 5 staff at the front desk helping their customers. It makes for quick check ins. We were seen quickly by a tech who took vitals and did preliminary testing of the eye. He was kind and professional. We then saw a specialist who used equipment to check the eye in more detail. There was some swelling which is normal. She also dilated the one eye to take a closer look. Everything looked normal. She answered a number of questions we had. She was very thorough and positive. We were scheduled for another follow up with the eye surgeon. A good visit. Shared parking and WiFi for their customers.

Sara at the front desk greeted me with the sweetest energy and left me feeling instantly welcomed--she really set the tone for the entire visit. Christine in the optics/eyeglass area went above and beyond, educating me on eyeglass options and suggested insightful questions to ask the doctor. She was equally a ray of light and made everything so much easier! Technician Jen, wow! What a standout--one of the most personable, validating, and humanizing medical professionals I've encountered. Her relaxed presentation, sense of humor, and kindness were so refreshing! She normalized every symptom I mentioned with humanness and playfulness. I felt such ease already in meeting Dr. Tran, knowing he must be amazing to have such incredible frontline staff. I was most definitely impressed. Dr. Tran was kind, professional, warm, and so encouraging. He put me at such ease throughout the exam. He was so attentive! He gave me his undivided attention and eye contact while his assistants Caitlin and Camilla entered notes. Just outstanding bedside manner!  He was quite the hoot in letting me know I was living on borrowed time having gone as long as I have without glasses into my mid-40's so to know glasses for the computer/work hours is all I need for now was the best news I could have asked for.  He was great about answering all my questions and made great recommendations for combatting dryness/strain on my eyes to preserve what I have longer.  When I scooted back to Christine to pick out my glasses and browsed frames while waiting, other staff walked by and complimented me simply on existing--such a rare, warm, friendly, and uplifting experience all-around! By the time I left, I felt like a million bucks, despite the (expected) sticker shock of new glasses! If all of this wasn't amazing enough, Jen complimented my long lashes and asked if they were real -- little did she know, that was the best thing she could have said to me! They are real and my own lashes, thanks to the Lash Boost serum I sell, use, and absolutely swear by, and compliments on my lashes are such joyful surprises! For anyone curious or wanting to share in the magic, here's the link: https://4anewyou.myrandf.com/en-us/category/lash-serum-and-eyebrow-tint. Heads-up for anyone getting a refraction: it's a surprisingly funny and slightly disorienting experience to have everything up close suddenly go blurry -- while still seeing far enough to drive just fine! Note to future me (and maybe a chuckle for the staff!): once the blur sets in, trying to read or sign anything feels like a game of "guess what that says!" All part of the fun, right? I have to say...in my past life, I would teach medical students that the people you hire as your frontline staff are absolutely a representation of what patients will expect from you as a provider. It informs how you will likely treat and care for your patients' experience. Well, this absolutely came to life thru this experience. The customer service at Horizon Eye Specialists off Allied Way in N. Phoenix is truly impeccable, and one of the best medical experiences I've ever experienced! Well done team!
