The one gentleman shook all of our hands as we left which was so nice. We had breakfast at the Rise twice, very good, and dinner once, which was good though only as one server was working our side of the busy dining room, it was slow. We stayed in the modern wing in a family room which was spacious and lovely. In terms of negatives, the mattress was hard and lumpy, and there was the only one small hook to hang towels and robes, so not much room for our party of three. I mention this because the Grand has a sustainability focus and encourages guests to re-use towels, which we did: more hooks are needed. The reading lamps on the headboard did not work. The major problem we had was the temperature of our room: the thermostat read 16 but it was more like 20; too warm for sleeping. I called down to reception and concierge and there was no answer - multiple times - I think perhaps the phones were malfunctioning. I reached an operator who said she'd leave a note as she was leaving in five minutes. I went down to the front desk and the staff member told me she could adjust it from a control panel in the lobby (?), however, the room stayed too warm. This definitely took away from the experience as I didn't sleep well and expected better from a five star hotel. Lastly, and this is small, but the greenery out front (topiaries and flowers) and in the hallways are plastic, again, not five star. For a hotel focused on sustainability, natural plants would be much more suitable.

Ask for an upgrade. Rooms are SMALL. VERY SMALL. The concierge is simply AMAZING and can help you…read morewith all your needs. Very VERY attentive and multitasking. The hotel is old and overwhelmingly big, but the location couldn't be better and the buffet breakfast with their beetroot smoked salmon was something we are STILL talking about. One of the spa employees was a real ditz, killing a star off the review. But on another visit, we had a tour of the vault, because my curious george husband HAD to see it (that is where the manicures happen). Upgraded room was super spacious and made for a lot of comfort with all the ammenities that make a "getaway" vacation special!

The bed was comfortable. The sheets were clean. Noise was okay the first morning we did have a bin lorry a about 0730 but that cant be helped compared to a New York hotel we stayed in traffic noise here was minimal. It is clearly a hotel used by holidaymakers, it is very close to the town centre and other attractions including the national railway museum, which we took our 5 yr old to for his fifth birthday. The staff at the front desk are extremely friendly and that is refreshing. We had the meal deal in the restaurant which was okay the waiter was young and was slightly annoying, he had clearly read the script on his course on how to speak with people and he kept to it! The deal is good value especially as it gives you free breakfast for the children. The breakfast consists of cereals, toast, continental and cooked. It is a bit of a free for all when you get the cooked breakfast as there were 2 lines, cooked and the the toast line going into effectively a dead end. You feel as though you are pushing in. On the whole the stay was okay, you cant complain too much for 50 quid a night. 3 stars given as the room smelt and the place looked a little tired and the car parking is extra. Would return at the price paid but no more.

The bathroom spotless (this is very important for the girlfriend!). The building's old but I'm not sure how long it's been a hotel, but it seems almost new. We didn't eat in the restaurant but had a few drinks in the bar. Well, actually it didn't have a bar so we were sent to the pub next door. Not a problem, it was really nice. The entrance lobby to the hotel is actually a Costa Coffee. I liked this. The staff were great, though we didn't really have much interaction with them. A fine hotel in a great location in a great city.

The bartenders were super friendly. In face all of the staff was very eager to help with any questions we had. Parking is in the same building just a few steps away from the front desk. I had asked for a riverview room, but they messed that up somehow and we ended up with a room with a window beside the sidewalk, which was not the greatest. The tub was very high and slippery. My SIL fell in her tub getting out and ended up with some bruises - nothing serious thankfully. No breakfast is included and we were not able to get reservations at a time that worked for us. There were several options within a 5 minute walk.

A little bit of history I have learnt is that it was built in 2000 and was devastated by the great flood, just after opening. It appeared on television with residents being rescued by boats. Two little things that stops me giving it five stars, firstly no room service, so no breakfast in bed. The other is the price in the bar for certain drinks, although not so bad as many pubs and restaurants are within a few minute walk. If your looking for a clean, comfortable hotel at reasonable prices with no frills, you won't go far wrong here.

I'd requested a window view room, and our second story view looked down on the River Ouse. The Guest House's location in town is great, being a five minute walk from the York Train Station via the new pedestrian bridge and within easy walking of everything else in town. The nearby Abbey's gorgeous gardens provided an especially pleasant shortcut into town, rain or shine. Then there were the accommodations. After staying in a cramped London hotel, we felt as if we could breathe! The bed was spacious, and the room and toilet facilities were great. I think the only criticism I can offer at all is that the shower drain was slow. The human element was wonderful, too. The owners of the Guest House were actually away, leaving us in the care of a professional B&B sitter. She was a kind, attentive hostess, happy to help us with anything we needed. We were greeted upon arrival with Yorkshire tea and warmed brownies! Our breakfasts were wonderful, too. She worked with our schedule so that we could eat there before doing a day tour and before our train departed. The default breakfast is a Full English, which we didn't do. My husband was happy with just the meat portion of the breakfast (those Yorkshire sausages...! don't expect teeny tiny American-style breakfast sausages) while I tried both of the lighter options, salmon with scrambled eggs and then Eggs Benedict. All accompanied by Yorkshire tea, of course, along with fresh toast. The breakfast bar included yogurt, a really good muesli, fresh fruit, and three excellent local jams and marmalades. We felt well-fortified for the day's adventures. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
