I had to move back in with my mom due to health with my developmental delays. The building that I was in always seemed clean. The caretaker who cleaned stayed on top of the cleaning. The maintenance workers came quickly if something needed fixing like appliances. I am proud to say that the safety features were always being updated and fixed especially after a fire in the building. I have never seen maintenance workers working so hard on trying to have Cedarvale Highlands a safe and good place to rent. I loved how much space there was in a one bedroom and I totally loved the arch ways in the hall and kitchen. When ever something happened the manager Holly was quick to help like the storage locker break ins right next to my unit and how she got a new lock for my storage locker. Cedarvalle Highlands was my very 1st apartment renting by myself. The neighbor down below me told my mom when she was helping me move out that I was very quiet. I loved living there. I had the peace and quiet living there unlike some other apartments. Only if I could go back. The one thing that changed since living there is that they don't take section 8 and that hurts a person who is vulnerable and needing help with housing.

I'm currently trying to leave the apartment under the 'broken lease clause,' but the Thomas Lake…read moreleasing office is making it very very difficult. Here's a run down of the nightmare so far, and other severe issues I had here: - A situation in which a $5,000 check mailed to me was taken from building 1530's by an individual. When I brought up the issue with Thomas Lake's Leasing office, I was told that there was nothing they could do about it and shrugged the situation off. As the situation was likely a theft at the time, and with very little help, I chose to call the police and started a report - the police said they would call the Thomas Lake office in the morning. The police made several attempts at calling the office, but no one answered the phone. When I e-mailed the office about the situation asking for help in identifying the individual who took the check with the cameras mounted in the lobby of 1530, I was met with silence and had to *personally* walk into the office to get an answer, with the police never being responded to. When I asked the staff about what they saw on the cameras, the property manager proceeded to lie and say there is no cameras in the lobby area, even though there are, as I counted them, three, all aimed at the mailboxes and parcel room. In this situation I would have accepted "sorry, but it is corporate policy not to release video footage without a warrant," but I didn't appreciate being stonewalled and ultimately lied to, not to mention the legality of refusing to acknowledge the police in the first place, and perhaps even protecting criminal actions. - A forementioned incident in which, roughly around the 10th of December time-frame, I stopped by the office to declare that I was leaving Jan 1st, as I had purchased a home. I was told by the leasing agent (who I believe is named "Annie?") that she couldn't do anything at the moment, as the property manager (the same individual who lied to me about the cameras,) had gone home early (and in fact had constantly gone home early on multiple occasions when I needed something done). The leasing agent did assure me that she would forward the message, and proceeded to write it down on a sticky note. After a while of not hearing back, I stopped by the office again and spoke to the general manager (same person who lied to me about the cameras,) about my moving out. When I asked about the previous communication with the leasing agent, the general manager seemed perplexed before telling me she found a digital note left by the leasing agent on her computer. She then said, to the best of my recollection, 'yeah, I see the notification now put in from the leasing agent. You should really only have to pay for January, which is something you already did. I guess you'll just have to pay your broken lease fines and then your move-out costs,' to which I verbally agreed to, and told her I would begin moving out, that she was free to flip the apartment and rent it out again, and that she was welcome to send me the bill whenever she'd like. I was not able to follow up on this immediately, since I was moving to a new home and starting a new job. At the end of the month I shut off my Minnesota Energy account as, again, I was told that my lease was ending in January. I followed up the shuttering of my account with calling the office, in which everyone immediately seemed confused, and that my lease was extended all the way to the end of the February, far beyond the Thomas Lake's "60-day" notice policy. I was forwarded to the general manager (same person who lied to me about the cameras,)  who went on to tell me that since I emailed Hayley on Jan 1st, that my 60 day notice would end on February and that I was still on the hook for February's rent ($1530,) and the utilities. At that point I mentioned that I had spoken to the leasing agent earlier than Jan 1st about me leaving, to which the general manager said something to the effect of 'if you don't have written proof of that, I don't care' and that I needed to pay the $1530 and that she threatened me by sending the rent payment to collections. At the time I was rather flustered and didn't have the time to mention the sticky note or the digital note on the general manager's system - I stated that 'so, basically I'm paying $1530 for a whoopsy?' in which the general manager denied that any wrong doing had taken place, and that she trusted her people to have written something down, despite the fact I encountered incident after incident of the Thomas Lake staff completely dropping the ball after I was told "we'll take care of it," and furthermore by hiding or destroying documentation concerning my earlier "60-day" notice.

My personal experience is that the management does their best to keep us, the residents, happy and comfortable. My requests for maintenance have always been handled in a timely manner or have had an explanation if there was going to be a wait for parts ect. The buildings are some of the cleanest and most well maintained of all the apartments I have lived in and I am 45 years old so I've seen some nasty ones in my time renting around the country. Don't always believe a grumpy review, go take a tour for yourself and decide. You will be happy you did.

Driving up to or past this place might make you think "hey this looks like a decent place to live…read morein in a decent area" Maybe it was at one point. But unfortunately I moved in due to the attractive price of rent for a 2 bedroom. Let me just make a list. - On our move in date. We showed up and absolutely no one seemed to know we were moving in. - on top of that. The unit we moved into was not cleaned at all. The smell is what I would describe as dead cat. (Come to find out management does not pay the cleaning people so they stopped cleaning) - Doing a further look into the new "Manager" of this place. You'll come to find that the individual has a record, and is not allowed to see their kids. Nice right !? - I've had 4 occasions now where I had to pick up someone else's trash which they will leave 25 feet away from a dumpster. - None of our appliances have been maintained. Our AC has a crusted black filter. Our dish washer doesn't drain properly and smells of rotten eggs. And the communal washer and dryer, again, also smells like poop. Our fireplace has most likely not been cleaned in years. - the pot holes from winter have yet to be fixed. Someone in one of the apartments has been filling them with sand/ rock. Poor guy should not have to do that. This has been an issue since December and it is now June. - We were assigned a garage. To one day find someone else parked there because management couldn't seem to remember what keys went to the right person..... - You can put in maintenance request, but good luck actually getting a guy to your place any time within the request. Once someone does get to you, they all seem like They hate their lives. But maybe I can't blame them considering who they have to work for. This list could go on but if I haven't convinced you to not to move into this place by now then I pray that your circumstance will allow you to be in a better place someday. The reason I have this 2 stars instead of 1 is because I believe this place has potential to be amazing ! It's in such a great location and the buildings aren't even in horrible shape. Just some attention from better people will get this place going. Thank you.
