This is probably, short of a few areas colleges, the nicest library in the LV by a long shot…read more * There's only one parking lot in the back of the building and while it's not too large, I've never had trouble finding a space although if you did I guess you would be parking on the street which around here is kind of sketch. * Nice longer hours being open until eight Monday thru Thursday. * Nice sized children's area on the second floor and if the noise level is a bit too much on the other side of the second floor there is an adult's only area which is normally pin drop quiet. * Now that the libraries in Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton have joined forces one library card allows you to borrow from all three and return books to all three very much hassle free. * If there is one negative it would be that don't come trying to use one of their computers for any online activities as while there are a good number of terminals they are regularly full and people camp out for what seems like forever. * While a library has existed in Allentown for over one hundred years, the current building was built in the early 70's and quite honestly it looks like it. Also, don't let Google fool you into thinking that there are other Allentown library branches because this has been it since 2009 when deep state budget cuts forced the Emaus Avenue branch to close. For right now this is our go-to library when needed as everything is new-ish, clean and the staff is very customer service orientated. What's not to like?

I'm sad they got rid of the microfilm readers; I guess those were moved to the Allentown Library. Makes sense that these aren't as popular as they used to be, but I'll miss heading down to BAPL and idly scrolling through old newspapers for an hour or two. Anyway, the selection is basically good here. Lots of new fiction and classics, and a solid collection of DVDs and audiobooks and CDs. The staff is sometimes friendly, sometimes not as friendly. They're mostly fine. But the noise level of BAPL main branch . . . I have never been to another library as loud as this one. At any given time, library patrons are talking at normal volume, using noisy phones, or just generally, you know, not being silent, which is what you're supposed to be at a library. Isn't that one of the oldest rules of civilization, that you shut your mouth when you enter the hallowed grounds of the town library? When I was there a few days ago, a band concert or practice, I couldn't quite tell which, was going on in the "Quiet Study Room" between four and five o'clock. The doors were shut but of course it was extremely loud. I can't imagine them doing this kind of thing at Easton Library or really any other library I've visited in my entire life. I'll keep going to BAPL, I love a library, and like I said, their selection is good. But this is not a place I'd go and spend a couple hours just enjoying the atmosphere (or microfilm newspapers); when I go to BAPL, it's to grab something I've already researched on my own, and get out.

I came to the library today 8/24/17 so I could make a photo copy as well as print a paper I needed…read morefrom the public computers. Upon arrival I asked how I was to go about using the copy machine and the girl working the desk with brown curly hair told me it costs 15 cents and that I can receive change for a dollar at the machine. I got my 4 quarters and she helped me make the photo copy. She kind of had a degrading attitude as if I was stupid because I didn't know how to use the copier but I just ignored it. I handed her a quarter for the 15 cent charge for the photo copy and moved on to use the computer to print something that would also cost 15 cents. When I was finished I went up to the counter to tell her I was finished. Since the first print was 15 cents and I had given her a quarter and then printed something else that costs 15 cents I knew I only had to give her 5 cents since I didn't receive my change. Not that it really mattered to me because it's just a couple cents. But when I told her I owed her 5 she looked at me like I was crazy and really rudely said "honey no you don't own me 5 cents I own you 10" I was so baffled that she was taking to me like I was a child and acting like I was crazy for thinking I owe her 5 cents. I tried explaining it to her again and she slid a dime towards me and with a condescending cocky attitude and said "just go". I was so shocked and felt like it would be worthless to argue over a few cents. What is wrong about the situation is the way she talked down on me as a customer from the moment I asked for her assistance. The librarians are there to help, not talk to you like you're un-educated. I have a college education and have worked for an incredible hospitality company as a team leader for 8 years. I know how to count change and I don't tolerate people talking to me, or others in the way she did. I have lived in Nazareth for my entire life and grew up going to the library. The librarians are always nice but whoever worked the desk at 5:30/6 PM on Wednesday August 24th needs to learn to count change and have a nicer attitude.

First some history from the Internet about the site…read more "Coplay Cement Company Kilns, also known as the Saylor Park Industrial Museum, is an open-air historic site located at Coplay, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. The nine kilns were built in 1892-1893, and used for the production of Portland cement. They are constructed of locally produced red brick, and are known as Schoefer vertical kilns. They were shut down in 1904. The Coplay Cement Company donated the kilns and surrounding land to Lehigh County in 1975, for a cement industry museum. It is operated as a partnership between the County of Lehigh, which owns and maintains the site, and the Lehigh County Historical Society, which provides educational services. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The Saylor Cement Museum honors David Saylor (1827-1884), the father of the American Portland cement industry, and the people who built this industry into one of the most important in the Lehigh Valley and the nation. Lehigh County was a natural spot for cement production. Cement is made from rocks containing lime, silica, and alumina; Lehigh County limestone "cement rock" contains all three ingredients. In 1866 David O. Saylor helped found Coplay Cement Company. In 1871, he received the first American patent for Portland cement, which is much stronger than the natural cement that had previously been produced in this country. Saylor's Portland cement built bridges, docks, jetties, roads, aqueducts, subways, and skyscrapers. By 1900 the Lehigh Valley made 72% of Portland cement produced in this country. The first kiln at the Coplay Cement Company was a dome kiln. Dome kilns were inefficient; they had to shut down often. In 1893 Coplay Cement built Mill B, containing the Schoefer kilns standing today. Originally enclosed in a large building, Schoefer kilns could run continuously. Soon, however, the even more efficient rotary kilns came into use. Mill B's outdated Schoefer kilns shut down in 1904, and Coplay Cement later used Mill B's buildings for storage." The four main things at Saylor Park would the remnants of the kilns, the playground, the community pool and it's a spot where you can pick up the Ironton Rail Trail. The key to this site at this point in time is trying to save the kilns. Lehigh County is trying to obtain the money needed to save the old furnaces which appear to be the last Aalborg style kilns left in the world. The current work being done at the site is due to a $200,000 federal grant with Lehigh County kicking in an equal amount to finish the work on Kiln #1. While nice, a full restoration of all the kilns is estimated at somewhere around $5 million dollars which is money that right now does not exist. Hopefully over time some type of public-private partnership can be formed to get the rest of the work done but in the meantime the site can be enjoyed at a distance and the Rail Trail that cuts thru the park is a fantastic repurposing of an old rail line that would never have been used again. If you go: The outdoor historic site, playground and Rail Trail are open daily year-round from sunrise to sunset and the Coplay Community Pool is open seasonally. Plenty of free parking is on site.
