If you love innovative theater, you have got to come down here. Ahmanson people. Not talking to…read moreyou. Stay at your end of downtown. I can't believe we lucked into seeing this new Theatre Company's very first production. There was nothing rookyish about it. They are a polished group that carried off a topic with difficult themes, and did so in a highly unorthodox manner. Who would dream of coupling a serious play on the current financial crisis with burlesque and fire dancing? They made it work, flowing seamlessly from flaming hula hoops to Ponzi schemes. It's just great when a play defies categorization. I love it when you can't just tuck something neatly into a genre. There was singing, dancing, circusy stuff. And NO. This is NOT A MUSICAL. The writing was contemporary .... ripped from the headlines. The financial meltdown. It's tentacles finding it's way into every segment of society. Their treatment of it was anything but hurriedly cobbled together simply to make use of a timely subject. The heavy theme; what we owe to one another members of society, was not trivialized when garishly madeup caberet girls plopped themselves into splits, and clowns peddled the vast stage on micro-bicycles. The lead actors were quite outstanding, lending gravity to all the physical cavorting. Not a weak member in the cast. The dialog is dead on. Did anything bug me? Yeah. How could anyone with the capability of writing such a kick-ass play come up with such a lame title. "Even Yet, It's Mighty Daring Sings". No. That is not a typo. Damn people! If you want to get folks in the seats ... er .. couches, do something about that title Now to the space itself. It's absolutely enormous. They used the stage well. Movement is blocked very effectively. The industrial space is a wonder; quite unlike prissy pre-conditioning as to how one thinks of "The Theatre", (insert upper-crust British accent here). There are comfy couches scattered about, encouraging friendship and community, rather than .... this is MY numbered seat. The Theatre is located on Industrial Street, and it is indeed INDUSTRIAL. Those of you who have already ventured so far as to eat at the unexpectedly upscale Church & State, can just make your way a little bit further down the more desolate street. I understand this theatre company also offers an assortment of classes. I haven't taken any classes here. Can't vouch for them. It's a vast space. As you walk toward the stage, you can see it's partitioned into sub-studios for dance-yoga, perhaps music. Lot's of art work scattered about. Looks inviting. A great place for unexpected theatre.

He had posted the event on the yelp events page and advised everyone to bring a sweater or jacket as it can get cold. However, I wasn't cold. Although the building is very large and it definitely feels you're part of the stage, I can feel the enthusiasm and warmth emanating from the actors. The only nitpick I had was the acoustics can be bad. The show yesterday featured 1920s Chicago accents, not something I hear every day and I had trouble understanding some of the actors as the sound bounced off the brick walls. There is one uni-sex restroom for the entire theatre. Just be patient, this is community theatre! If you have trouble locating this theatre, it is just a block away from Church and State and Royal Claytons. The best way to get there is to look for Industrial Street from Alameda. Plenty of free street parking.

Totally fun!!! Taking a dance class is something that I never thought I would ever do again - last…read moretime I was in dance I was in 7th grade, about 200 lbs, and cried when I had to dance in front of other people. My great friend Taylor decided that she wanted to give this class a shot (they had a $15 groupon) and talked me into it. I'll do anything for the promise of Margaritas. We were laughing and joking all the way there. Then when we got there and saw all the perfectly skinny b****es we began to feel a little bit nervous. We were joking about sticking to the back, our bellys jiggling, and not being able to get up off the floor. Lets just say compared to some of the women here we did not feel too sexy at the beginning (especially the blonde that was helping out with the class. She was like the definition of perfect). The instructors really put us at ease though. They let us know that this was not so much the "traditional" burlesque but moreso a CONTEMPORARY burlesque class - it was something different than I was expecting, but still amazingly fun! The class was compiled of a small group of all women. There were bachelorette parties, small groups of friends, and some women who were really serious and you could tell that they were going to put their $15 to use and seriously get their freak on after that class. It was revitalizing to see that 95% of the class showed up in sweatpants and tank tops - except for the few women that showed up in booty shorts. I'll say it once and I'll say it again. Skinny b****es ! We started off with some stretches and leg lifts. I had just gotten off an 8 hour shift of carrying around 30 lbs of gear and a kevlar vest so at times I felt like I couldn't lift my legs off the floor. There were stretches and moves that I hadn't done since high school cheer. Yet the instructors made sure to reiterate that everything was okay, and that everyone has their own level of what they are able to do and not feel bad. We learned some awesomely sexy moves such as the "sexy hair shake" (which I suppose only works if you've brushed your hair that day...), "sexy leg kicks" (think Bettie Page taking off her stockings), and the "sexy way to get off the floor" (arch your back and smile - always smile - scowling your face does not look sexy even though if you're out of shape like me your core will hurt!). We also did the sexy catwalk in groups of 3/4 across the room. Despite our best efforts Taylor and I were trying to stay together but we always ended up apart. It was fun to give ourselves kudos and complements as we strutted to some old school Britney. The fun part of the class came when we learned the burlesque dance. It had several 8 counts to it and was to a very, very, very sexy TLC song. There was booty shaking - hair flipping, leg spreading, tata shaking, and sexy strutting! It was super fun to learn and the instructors broke it down to nice simple combinations and went at the speed of the slowest person in the class (which was mostly me!). Although I am not very refined, and my version of "sexy" also included my knees cracking so loudly and me grunting when I was trying to get up that everyone erupted in laughter (even me!) I still had such an amazing time in this class. By the time the class had finished I had mastered (well in my mind....which is what counts!) a good portion of the dance and I felt a lot sexier than when I went in. I really recommend it to any lady that would love to try it and trust me bring a friend, take some shots before hand, and you will have a seriously great time!

We thought this was supposed to be a serious burlesque show but it was much more like a student…read moreshow, like people trying out stripping in front of an audience to see how it would feel. But it had heart for sure. It was cute and funny at times and pretty raunchy at times also which wasn't our particular taste but that's ok. I like raunchy but most of the humor here was just a little too much on the cheap and sleezy side for my taste. I just wished for one act at least to wow me, which didn't happen. The whole thing just felt like we were in someone's living room being entertained by their fun, sweet, and silly friends. If I were them I'd bring in real dancers, a director and production designer that was familiar with cool old cinema or theatrical dance sequences - think Crazy Horse, Singing in the Rain, Victor Victoria. Put real stories in the acts and relationships and not just make it solely about stripping for the audience each time, get a real costumer that can make cool visual experiences- right now it all feels like the artists built their own costumes out of whatever they had at home. Make the humor a little more funny and intelligent, put in a better sound system so we can feel the music more- the music was way too soft, and find more ways to bring creativity and imagination to the show. It's burlesque, we should leave feeling enchanted, not embarrassed we made our friends sit through it. Hope that's helpful.

The great thing is during the break between shows the performers socialize with the audience and take pics if you like. Well of course our favorite Pixie Marlow spent some time with our group and we got some really great shots. Right now we are planning to see the next show and many more. It was my first time attending an event by this promoter and it was overcrowded and she appeared to oversell the event. There was no where to sit since everyone had reserved tables. Why are tables even reserved for a game night? We should be able to freely move around to any table to play the games. I spoke to the promoter during the night to ask about available seating and she advised me to check the patio. It was a hot night, over 80 degrees out and no seats even available on the outside/hot patio. I left the event. I paid money like everyone else to play games, but with no seat, how was that supposed to happen? This set up does not allow you to mingle with others while playing the games. I will never support this event again. She needs to plan this better. The venue also seemed too small. Save your money and support a business that actually provides what they advertise! I agree with some of the other comments, with it being just a money grab. I would like a refund!

They also have photography and drawings. So interactive! The venue is great. I'm not too fond of the standard service at the Federal, but the servers who take care of folks attending shows are always excellent! My water was always full and my other drinks always came promptly. You have to know what to order at the Federal, but our food was tasty (Federal burger with no aioli, fish and chips, and mac and cheese to share). My partner and I agree that their fries are some of the most phenomenal fries we've ever had. They also have a great drink menu, with an expansive beer selection, strong cocktails, and more wine than you'd expect from a gastropub. The venue is pretty spacious and no matter where you're seated you'll get a great view since the performers tend to move around. The show itself is amazing. I'm a beginning pole dancer, and the performers are among the best, most recognizable names in Los Angeles. The show I attended featured performances from Monica Kay, Tiffany Rose Mockler, Candace Cane, Heather Lou, and Tonya Kay herself. They are immensely talented, each bringing their own flavor to the stage and poles; I dream of one day being as talented as they are. This show combines athleticism, grace, humor, and striptease into one outstanding evening that my partner and I thoroughly enjoyed. They really stick to the pinup theme with the music, performances, costumes--everything! It's so hard to pick a favorite performance because everything was unbelievable. In addition to the performances, Tonya gave out prizes for some of the folks who brought their cars, and for those who dressed in the pinup style. It was really cute! If you enjoy classic cars, well-crafted cocktails, gastropub food, burlesque, pole dancing, and/or the 1950s, you'll love this. We can't wait to come back for another show soon!

Thank you YELP and Katie B. for hooking the Elites up with free tickets to CIRQUE BERZERK!…read more When I was notified that I got free tickets to this show, I skimmed through a couple reviews on Yelp and went to this show without much expectations. If you are going to CIRQUE BERZERK with Cirque Du Soleil or a Broadway Musical in mind, yeah... you will be disappointed. I saw a lot of Yelpers were criticized CIRQUE BERZERK for their poor storyline, but again... if you look at each act as an individual act, it is not that bad. This is definitely a show for 18+. Overall, show was entertaining but I really think they picked a wrong venue for this event. I was seated in the Lower Balcony and had problems seeing parts of the show (especially the opening act). Favorite part was probably trampoline act and pulling a hat out of the rabbit. Hahah. Again, thank you YELP for inviting the Elites to see this show!

Also, arrive at the box office two hours before the show to enter the "Rush" ticket raffle, which lets you buy a VIP ticket (front balcony, best seats in the house) for $20 each. The show was actually a lot better than I had expected. Although people said it was like a Tim Burton's production of Cirque du Soleil, I don't watch movies and I've never seen Cirque du Soleil, so that didn't really clarify anything for me! The website is a pretty accurate description of what the show is, a dark, scantily clad and comical circus and performance show. It was a very diverse crowd who came to the show too, including goths/heavy metal looking people (as expected), older couples, and a lot of people were coming here right after the Lakers game which ended just before the show started. As for the show, the first half REALLY won me over, the second half not so much. If you left before intermission, you'd be telling all your friends about Cirque Berzerk this very minute. After intermission, I was wondering what would follow up that very impressive showing at the beginning because of course, they'd save the best for last, right? WRONG. But still, I was entertained. For a measly $20?!? I felt like I was robbing the place. The good: a nicely decorated stage, singers singing the whole duration of the show to set an ambiance to the performances, a large assortment of props, a super qualified list of performers (check out the program notes), an impressive VIP lounge upstairs, and they even came out after the show to take pictures and meet with the crowd. And no, not for 5 minutes, or just the smaller background performers, but the main acts. The bad: an only decent second half, I was under the impression that there would be more fire acts after seeing the website, the story kinda sucks, lady in red should play a bigger, better part, but most importantly.. .. the title rhymes with Circle Jerk (had to throw it in there). All in all, go see Cirque Berzerk, get $20 VIP tickets, and take pictures with scary stilt clowns or the zombie cop with huge tits.
