Damn everything but the circus! ...damn everything that is grim, dull, motionless, unrisking, inward turning, damn everything that won't get into the circle, that won't enjoy, that won't throw its heart into the tension, surprise, fear and delight of the circus, the round world, the full existence... ---- e. e. cummings The circus! The circus is coming to town! When I was a kid, I loved going to the circus. There are all sorts of crazy pictures of me standing next to huge animals including a bear. Little 5-year-old me in a pink jacket with a bear. What were my parents thinking? Well, the days of going to circuses with animals are long gone. How passe! And Cirque du Soleil seems awfully expensive. So, when I heard about Cirque Berzerk, I was ALL about it. Being the type of person who loves fringe stuff though not actually fringe themselves, this is the perfect gateway drug. I know I'll never go to Burning Man so it's pretty cool they went "mainstream." So mainstream, they're selling discounted tickets on Goldstar. I got the $80 tickets for half off plus a processing fee. And they were GREAT seats. Victoria and I sat in the first row, right behind the little boxed section. This gave us a great view of the hot semi-naked trapeze artists. Cirque Berzerk wasn't entirely on point with everything. I think there's a distinct impression at times it isn't supposed to be professional. They need a better ringmaster. Someone more forceful and dark. I just couldn't take the guy seriously. The story line tied everything together but was it plausible? Well, not really. But let's go with it anyway. I wasn't into most of the music but it got better at the end. My faves were definitely the trapeze folks. I also enjoyed the fire bit as well though nothing terribly new. And I've seen people do stuff with drapes before but it's still cool. Who hasn't seen a trampoline act before? Well, they did it better than anyone else I've ever seen. The show is about two hours with a 20-minute intermission. During intermission, we were outside looking at this small side stage with an eyeball bat. All of the sudden, the thing shot out a huge blast of fire! And then the guy starting playing a guitar that shot out fire as well. Awesome! I enjoyed that a bit. I didn't go into the drinks tent but I heard there are pinball machines. Maybe I should have checked that out for my friends over at Tiki Pinball, ah well, next year! Oh yeah, I plan to go back if they change the show around. I suppose the best parts of the show for me was the costuming and the funnier bits. I really liked the little person (great makeup!) and the "corpse." One of the clowns ran into our row as he dragged that fake body around. Ha, what was even more hilarious to me were the body parts wranglers who came by after to search for the parts that fell off or discarded. We parked by the restaurant we had dinner at so about half a mile away. But there is plenty of street parking in the area. I'd avoid the $10 lot. They do have a full concession stands including corn on the cob, popcorn, Mexican food and the like. Damn everything but the circus! #1500

My friend told me that we were going to watch a Cirque Du Soleil show and I was super excited. The whole time I sat there and wondered how Cirque Du Soleil could have dropped their standards so drastically. Some of the performers were decent; others were so out of shape that it was uncomfortable to watch their struggle and cellulite. Hmmm...maybe I sat too close. I don't think that Club Nokia was the best venue for a show like this. They laid out the chairs on the level dance floor which resulted in a not-so-optimal seating arrangement. The story was cliché but entertaining. The costumes were okay; very wanna-be Cirque Du Soleil. The trampoline was my favorite act. They made it look super fun and I now I want my own trampoline. The live singing was pretty cool too. Otherwise, it was uninventive and already done. We had paid $5 per ticket through a special AEG thing and I'm glad that I went. It was an evening well spent. But I would be annoyed if I had purchased these tickets at full price. I think I definitely would have enjoyed it better had I not thought that it was Cirque Du Soleil. I think my expectations were too high. These two are just not at the same level. O well. In conclusion, Cirque Bezerk is the inbred cousin of Cirque Du Soleil and I would shell out more dough to watch the latter at any time.

My first Elite event! Now I can truly call myself a Yelper. :) The name confused me so at first, I thought this was a Cirque du Soleil production. I was a bit disappointed when I realized my mistake, but this show really blew me away. Who knew that the human body was capable of such things?! God wasn't kidding when he pronounced man "very good." Right on, bro. I know the freaky/wacky/dark theme must've creeped some people out, but I loved the set, the lighting, the costuming... everything was done so artistically and with a purpose. There's a live band and singers. But I gotta say, acting is clearly not their forte. The beginning of the act is a bit uncomfortable to sit through, but hang tight and prepare for some awesome acrobatics. Without giving away too much, my favorite acts were the the trampolines, the contortionist couple, fire eaters, and the silks. A message to you (and myself): do not try this at home, kids. One thing that I could've done without were the female vocalists. What the heck were their shrill voices singing about? It was cool after the performance though, as the cast came out and we got a chance to talk and take pictures with them. A very cool and chill crowd off the stage willing to mingle with their fans, which is a rare find.

I have to say, this was a BIG let down. I am just glad that I did not pay for the $80 seats but we weren't that far off at $60. =( (we got to sit anywhere we wanted when they barely filled a quarter of the tent @ the 7pm show) Saw the website from a friend, looked very cool and very intriguing. Bought tickets right away. With all the hype on the website, how could anyone not think that it was going to be anything better than great?! To be frank about it, to me it felt like all the 2nd rate rejects from Circus de Soleil found their way here. Get enough of them, put together a really bad "storyline" and you have a bunch of sub-par acts that have no "wow" factor. (Well, the only one that came close were the four guys and the trampoline but that one got old after 7 mins.) I actually feel asleep for a good 5 mins as I went into a trance state from all the bad "singing" on stage. It was really screaming followed by a lot of pounding of strange metals. If you are running late, no worries. The first 20 mins is just worthless. Woman in red who runs around looking for a way out of her miserable life, falls into a hole and then begins all the bad acts. Towards the end, a gang of masked dancers give it a go on stage for 10 mins or so. Again, done very bad. Had so much potential. Dancers aren't even unison the whole dance and they never really do anything worthy. The coolest thing at this event are the fire sign at the entrance and an even larger fire shooter towards the portal pottys. I really wish that the show blew my mind away but it did just the exact opposite. Seemed like half the people loved it but I can tell you that either they were drunk or they have never seen a person do a flip.

Randomly ended up here on Sat night for the 10pm show. I started the night off by meeting some folks in Little Tokyo for dinner and 2 of them had tickets to this show. So myself and my another buddy from Hermosa went along thinking it was some sort of piercing/fire/sword swallowing freak show act. This wasn't my cut of tea. I should have done a little research before I got here and paid $55 for ticket in Section 7. It was kind of an attempt to be a scary Cirque Soleil. I felt it failed at both angels. The attempt to portray their scary story line came across a little cheesy to me. Thanks goodness they had a tent w/ a bar outside. Also people swing dancing in the bar tent area at intermission, really??? Someone was trying to describe the crowd to me as the Silver Lake hipster crowd. I think Jessica L put it best on here "The story line was not cohesive and frankly unnecessary... I like my cirque like I like my porn: no story line, all action. The first 1/4 of the show is wasted setting up a story line about some underworld and I think it was supposed to be scary." I think there was 17 acts. The one act I did like was the 4 Brothers Trampoline Act in the second half. I've been to a couple Cirque Soleil shows and I liked those shows.

I have been to the LA Philharmonic Walt Disney Concert Hall several times to see/hear different genres of music from ballet, to symphony, to jazz, and of course classical music, and during the holidays they give a great performance by their choir. Those of you who know me, know I love classical music and do have my favorite composers: Chopin, Vivaldi and Mozart. On Sunday, March 29th at 7:30pm my friend and I went to see Strauss, Bruch, & Moussa's elegant, classy performance that shook up the whole entire venue and the audience. It was just MAGNIFICENT! 10/10 The venue itself is STUNNING! Glamorous and easy to navigate all the aisles. Our seats were very comfortable and you can see the stage from any corner/angle since the theatre is not that big. Also has balcony seating. Tickets were $50 a piece not including tax. It has a beautiful gift shop, garden, different restaurants all around the building, and a small store where you can purchase some beverages and snacks. Overall, a GREAT performance and we both had a lovely time. Parking is $10 with few an entrances and few restrooms for both men & women. Thank you all for another AWESOME performance!! I have seen the Mona Lisa and was impacted by her smile that seemed to move on its own. And ever since then I have loved Parisian culture because, after that trip, I understood that the city of lights producses so much to love and adore. It is the city that empowered Quasimoto to find his inner beauty. It is the city that had a rat control a human via its hair. It is the city that gifted the world with croissant and funny mustaches. It is the city that gave us french cheese, a queen who let others eat cake, and the guillotine because, I mean, what would a Tale of Two cities be without a guillotine. In short, I can can for gay Paree. Thus, it was only natural to attend a Bastille Day celebration to pay homage to the city of lights and butter. This celebration, I can describe as a capsule celebration. Meaning that the day did not have parades or avenue closures in its name. All the celebration was centered in this courtyard. If one has not attended the plaza, then imagine a micro Hollywood bowl. Meaning that if the Hollywood Bowl was a cupcake, this place would be a tic-tac, not a gum drop. But still, with the festivities of Bastille lighting the spot, it became a firework on display. This might seem obvious but I really enjoyed sitting on the courtyards steps and hearing french music from the stage. And I did not just like the music because it heard good, but also what it produce amongst some of the attendants-- a light-hearted frivolity that could only be expressed in melody and jaunty step. The singers explained that they were about to sing a classic french song. One that paid homage to its famous avenue: Champs-Élysées. As they were hearing words that I could barely recognized, a woman behind me started to sing as well. I turned back, we made eye contact and for a second she serenated me with the words Champs-Élysées. I felt her love for her land in her words. For a micro-second that lasted french minutes, I was back in the land of french cheese and pastries. The note she carried in her song were the tickets I needed to see Paris, even briefly again. I also saw the dancers. Not paid ones. Regular people dancing in front of the stage. I saw a man and a woman dance care free amongst many. He twirled her. She followed. It was melody in movement. Their joyful moves were mine as well. I experienced love for the French countryside through their dance. I guess national pride is contagious. The singers also played a song in English but with a French Accent. L is for the way you look tonight. It was a great afternoon. I also have no power to resist buying stuff at festivals. THIS IS THE PERFECT VENUE FOR A VAMPIRE ROCKSTAR…read more Meaning that it's the perfect venue for Kamijo! If you don't know who he is, definitely look up his solo work, his work in Lareine and Versailles, you will NOT be disappointed. Paid parking all around, but if you're brave and willing to circle around and walk a bit, free street parking is possible. Due to an accident on the freeway, we barely made it here 10-15 minutes before the show, and most people were already let in, but security was pretty efficient and checking in was very quick too. There's drinks, concessions (it's a theater, you know), and the merchandise was strangely being sold in the middle area when you enter and exit, but staff was situated to direct people and assist you at every line and entrance into the theater. We got orchestra seating right before the balcony ends and with the sloping of the seats, we were able to see decently well, even if our seats weren't the best of the best. I guess, based on the crowd and the audience, even though we had assigned seating, everyone ended up standing up for the entire performance. A bit strange, but less stressful in a sense that you don't necessarily have to camp there super early as your seat is already assigned (you would have to though if you wanted any of the sold out merch...). We were lucky enough that there weren't any super tall people in front of us. Lighting was great, sound quality was amazing and at no point did any instrumentals or the vocals get drowned out. But the most impressive part was the architecture. Absolutely gorgeous. Probably the most favorite of all of the venues I've been to thus far. I can see why Kamijo chose this theater. It's perfect for an immortal vampire like himself. I wish we got there a bit earlier (not just only for merch), but for the opportunity to take photos which I saw a lot of people do. The lovely hanging chandeliers, the painted ceilings, aged gold archways, the Spanish Gothic style modeled after Spain's Segovia Cathedral. It didn't feel like we were in LA anymore after stepping in. So much history in this building from the 1920's . When you're in there, look up, look around, it's just so intricately and beautifully designed. Apparently the restrooms had a powder room too, so nice! I would love to go to another event here in the future.

The newly remodeled outdoor downtown LA pavilion is so pretty, it will take your breath away. And…read moreso will the low cost underground self-parking (only $10, which has got to be the best deal in town). The huge courtyard with giant fountain spans the three theatres there -- the Mark Taper, the Ahmanson (both for plays and musicals), and the mighty Dorothy Chandler (for opera and ballet). It's massive! We were there for the new Philip Glass opera, ancient Egypt's Akhnaten. Lots of Queen Nefertiti cosplay so it's worth getting there early for the people watching. Seats are impossibly pricey, so it may be a one-time thing but I'd say worth it. Our front row seats (but on the side so you miss a tiny, tiny bit of the stage) were about $200 each. The Dorothy Chandler is huge so you may need your (appropriately named) opera glasses if you're up in the hinterland. For most operas, there are "supertitles" above the stage which translate what you're watching. Robbie Yelp tip on food -- the sit-down restaurants on and adjacent to the plaza are super pricey. Instead, do this: the Mullin Wine Bar is right there on the pavilion. For two to share, get one pizza and one charcuterie plate. Both are delicious and filling; that's $50. Add drinks and you're getting close to a hundo, but it is what it is. Take your food and drinks out into the plaza for people watching until the opera bell rings. O sole mio!

Had a great first experience at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion last month. Oftentimes, my visit to…read morethe area have been to the Walt Disney Concert Hall for the LA Phil (and usually Vespaio afterwards), the MOCA, or to The Broad. Recently, I was here for LA Opera Verdi's Falstaff. Previous to this visit, I have never been to an opera only performance, besides having one as part of a concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall or watching them on PBS. I read the summary first prior to attending and all the information provided on the website was very helpful (from parking, opera summary, etc.), especially for first time visitors. Despite a road closure nearby, it was still pretty easy to get into the parking structure and walk over to the Pavilion. We arrived early to pick up your tickets and use the restroom prior to the performance. With any "subtitles", they often tend to be to the side, so I often had to look to the right and back to the stage to understand what they were singing about. The stage did not look as big as I expected, but when the sets were switched, I was amazed at the beautiful sets and also how "grand" they looked from my seat. During the intermission, there were snacks and drinks one could purchase. I love that they also offered throat drops to the side, which some patrons should probably have used as they were coughing during the performance. The lines to the women's restroom were also coordinated, as if one was at Disneyland. We were lucky enough to zip through the roped-off lines early on before the lines really started to get long. We also stepped out for air prior to the intermission being over. There were "pre-" and "post-" performance talks and I wished that I was able to hear where the post-performance talk was going to be. I had left after the applause to hurry and use the restroom, so I missed the location announcement of the post-performance talks. Yes, I could have asked an employee but my friend had also already walked outside of the venue. The Music Center also had an "art" installation next door, in a small space so we also checked it out before we left. The performance was wonderful and the employees we encountered were very kind. It was easy to get to and from the venue, from the parking structure. It is a great location and would recommend a visit at least once.
