Damn everything but the circus! ...damn everything that is grim, dull, motionless, unrisking, inward turning, damn everything that won't get into the circle, that won't enjoy, that won't throw its heart into the tension, surprise, fear and delight of the circus, the round world, the full existence... ---- e. e. cummings The circus! The circus is coming to town! When I was a kid, I loved going to the circus. There are all sorts of crazy pictures of me standing next to huge animals including a bear. Little 5-year-old me in a pink jacket with a bear. What were my parents thinking? Well, the days of going to circuses with animals are long gone. How passe! And Cirque du Soleil seems awfully expensive. So, when I heard about Cirque Berzerk, I was ALL about it. Being the type of person who loves fringe stuff though not actually fringe themselves, this is the perfect gateway drug. I know I'll never go to Burning Man so it's pretty cool they went "mainstream." So mainstream, they're selling discounted tickets on Goldstar. I got the $80 tickets for half off plus a processing fee. And they were GREAT seats. Victoria and I sat in the first row, right behind the little boxed section. This gave us a great view of the hot semi-naked trapeze artists. Cirque Berzerk wasn't entirely on point with everything. I think there's a distinct impression at times it isn't supposed to be professional. They need a better ringmaster. Someone more forceful and dark. I just couldn't take the guy seriously. The story line tied everything together but was it plausible? Well, not really. But let's go with it anyway. I wasn't into most of the music but it got better at the end. My faves were definitely the trapeze folks. I also enjoyed the fire bit as well though nothing terribly new. And I've seen people do stuff with drapes before but it's still cool. Who hasn't seen a trampoline act before? Well, they did it better than anyone else I've ever seen. The show is about two hours with a 20-minute intermission. During intermission, we were outside looking at this small side stage with an eyeball bat. All of the sudden, the thing shot out a huge blast of fire! And then the guy starting playing a guitar that shot out fire as well. Awesome! I enjoyed that a bit. I didn't go into the drinks tent but I heard there are pinball machines. Maybe I should have checked that out for my friends over at Tiki Pinball, ah well, next year! Oh yeah, I plan to go back if they change the show around. I suppose the best parts of the show for me was the costuming and the funnier bits. I really liked the little person (great makeup!) and the "corpse." One of the clowns ran into our row as he dragged that fake body around. Ha, what was even more hilarious to me were the body parts wranglers who came by after to search for the parts that fell off or discarded. We parked by the restaurant we had dinner at so about half a mile away. But there is plenty of street parking in the area. I'd avoid the $10 lot. They do have a full concession stands including corn on the cob, popcorn, Mexican food and the like. Damn everything but the circus! #1500

My friend told me that we were going to watch a Cirque Du Soleil show and I was super excited. The whole time I sat there and wondered how Cirque Du Soleil could have dropped their standards so drastically. Some of the performers were decent; others were so out of shape that it was uncomfortable to watch their struggle and cellulite. Hmmm...maybe I sat too close. I don't think that Club Nokia was the best venue for a show like this. They laid out the chairs on the level dance floor which resulted in a not-so-optimal seating arrangement. The story was cliché but entertaining. The costumes were okay; very wanna-be Cirque Du Soleil. The trampoline was my favorite act. They made it look super fun and I now I want my own trampoline. The live singing was pretty cool too. Otherwise, it was uninventive and already done. We had paid $5 per ticket through a special AEG thing and I'm glad that I went. It was an evening well spent. But I would be annoyed if I had purchased these tickets at full price. I think I definitely would have enjoyed it better had I not thought that it was Cirque Du Soleil. I think my expectations were too high. These two are just not at the same level. O well. In conclusion, Cirque Bezerk is the inbred cousin of Cirque Du Soleil and I would shell out more dough to watch the latter at any time.

My first Elite event! Now I can truly call myself a Yelper. :) The name confused me so at first, I thought this was a Cirque du Soleil production. I was a bit disappointed when I realized my mistake, but this show really blew me away. Who knew that the human body was capable of such things?! God wasn't kidding when he pronounced man "very good." Right on, bro. I know the freaky/wacky/dark theme must've creeped some people out, but I loved the set, the lighting, the costuming... everything was done so artistically and with a purpose. There's a live band and singers. But I gotta say, acting is clearly not their forte. The beginning of the act is a bit uncomfortable to sit through, but hang tight and prepare for some awesome acrobatics. Without giving away too much, my favorite acts were the the trampolines, the contortionist couple, fire eaters, and the silks. A message to you (and myself): do not try this at home, kids. One thing that I could've done without were the female vocalists. What the heck were their shrill voices singing about? It was cool after the performance though, as the cast came out and we got a chance to talk and take pictures with them. A very cool and chill crowd off the stage willing to mingle with their fans, which is a rare find.

I have to say, this was a BIG let down. I am just glad that I did not pay for the $80 seats but we weren't that far off at $60. =( (we got to sit anywhere we wanted when they barely filled a quarter of the tent @ the 7pm show) Saw the website from a friend, looked very cool and very intriguing. Bought tickets right away. With all the hype on the website, how could anyone not think that it was going to be anything better than great?! To be frank about it, to me it felt like all the 2nd rate rejects from Circus de Soleil found their way here. Get enough of them, put together a really bad "storyline" and you have a bunch of sub-par acts that have no "wow" factor. (Well, the only one that came close were the four guys and the trampoline but that one got old after 7 mins.) I actually feel asleep for a good 5 mins as I went into a trance state from all the bad "singing" on stage. It was really screaming followed by a lot of pounding of strange metals. If you are running late, no worries. The first 20 mins is just worthless. Woman in red who runs around looking for a way out of her miserable life, falls into a hole and then begins all the bad acts. Towards the end, a gang of masked dancers give it a go on stage for 10 mins or so. Again, done very bad. Had so much potential. Dancers aren't even unison the whole dance and they never really do anything worthy. The coolest thing at this event are the fire sign at the entrance and an even larger fire shooter towards the portal pottys. I really wish that the show blew my mind away but it did just the exact opposite. Seemed like half the people loved it but I can tell you that either they were drunk or they have never seen a person do a flip.

Randomly ended up here on Sat night for the 10pm show. I started the night off by meeting some folks in Little Tokyo for dinner and 2 of them had tickets to this show. So myself and my another buddy from Hermosa went along thinking it was some sort of piercing/fire/sword swallowing freak show act. This wasn't my cut of tea. I should have done a little research before I got here and paid $55 for ticket in Section 7. It was kind of an attempt to be a scary Cirque Soleil. I felt it failed at both angels. The attempt to portray their scary story line came across a little cheesy to me. Thanks goodness they had a tent w/ a bar outside. Also people swing dancing in the bar tent area at intermission, really??? Someone was trying to describe the crowd to me as the Silver Lake hipster crowd. I think Jessica L put it best on here "The story line was not cohesive and frankly unnecessary... I like my cirque like I like my porn: no story line, all action. The first 1/4 of the show is wasted setting up a story line about some underworld and I think it was supposed to be scary." I think there was 17 acts. The one act I did like was the 4 Brothers Trampoline Act in the second half. I've been to a couple Cirque Soleil shows and I liked those shows.

I have been to the LA Philharmonic Walt Disney Concert Hall several times to see/hear different genres of music from ballet, to symphony, to jazz, and of course classical music, and during the holidays they give a great performance by their choir. Those of you who know me, know I love classical music and do have my favorite composers: Chopin, Vivaldi and Mozart. On Sunday, March 29th at 7:30pm my friend and I went to see Strauss, Bruch, & Moussa's elegant, classy performance that shook up the whole entire venue and the audience. It was just MAGNIFICENT! 10/10 The venue itself is STUNNING! Glamorous and easy to navigate all the aisles. Our seats were very comfortable and you can see the stage from any corner/angle since the theatre is not that big. Also has balcony seating. Tickets were $50 a piece not including tax. It has a beautiful gift shop, garden, different restaurants all around the building, and a small store where you can purchase some beverages and snacks. Overall, a GREAT performance and we both had a lovely time. Parking is $10 with few an entrances and few restrooms for both men & women. Thank you all for another AWESOME performance!! Will definitely return again next time I get a brochure or pamphlet in my mail.

I had read some things that people were disappointed this year and that the experience was shorter and different from years previous but as I've never been I had nothing to reference so I enjoyed myself a lot. I don't want to go into too many details as to ruin the fun but there were some scares (nothing over the top), and it wasn't super crowded. And it was fun interacting with various characters and being in a small group. I really liked the behind the scenes tour that we got afterward, as the gentlemen who took us around was really knowledgable about the show and it was pretty neat to go behind the scenes and witness other people experiencing the show...we got a non-scary behind the curtain point of view. My hub and kid still enjoyed the experience even though it was different from years past. The gentleman explained that each location has its own set of complexities and things they do at one location might not be able to be done at another. Seemed on point to me. Don't think too deeply. The actors, ambiance, decorations and room setups were well done. The ice room could've been colder with some dry ice. I do think it's pretty steep for a 35 minute escape maze and the behind the scenes was cool but short. The whole experience took us an hour, including bathroom breaks. I recommend going early because it seemed like the actors don't get a lot of breaks so I'm glad I got to see their more passionate acting when they're not tired yet. It felt like a huge picnic under the LA sky. Bring your favorite snacks, food, blankets, and lawn chairs. They also have vendors selling food and drinks if you want to buy something there. The event is completely free--you just sign up for tickets in advance, which helps them gauge headcount. They also offer season passes with prime viewing areas if you want a reserved spot closer to the stage. The bathrooms are clean, the event is well organized, and there's convenient parking right underneath the venue--we paid just $10. It was a packed house and such a great vibe. I've even shared videos because the energy was so incredible. If you love live music, this is a must-try experience. It's family-friendly, fun, and a great way to spend an evening in the city. I truly hope my daughter grows to appreciate these kinds of events as much as I do.

Shoutout to the organizers of these summer series of free concerts at this venue. It's great for the community and everyone is very friendly. They do provide some seating here but you can also bring your own chairs. It's surrounded by commercial businesses and tall buildings with several restaurants nearby. We did notice that a lot of the local restaurants close after business hours (around 5p) but there were a few food trucks out front. The food took about 30-35 mins so if you have young ones be prepared. The venue is kid friendly and my boys enjoyed playing on the steps in the front to get their energy out. The open space, the vibe and the acoustics in the area were all such a vibe especially at night! My advice would be to follow grand performance on Instagram and catch one of these summer free concerts with the family, if possible. Make sure to bring a jacket because it does get a little chilly and windy when the sun goes down. As far as parking goes, we parked at the Broad Museum's parking structure on 2nd street for $19. They close their garage at 10:30p so make sure to give yourself about $15 minutes to walk a block to the garage before they close. Overall, I highly recommend checking out a concert here. It was such a great experience and my kids had a blast! This is such a great place for the community. Also note that the historic Angels Flight Railway Trolly is within walking distance and that will take down to the Grand Central Marketplace. Be aware that the wait times can be a little longer before and after a concert due to a lot of people leaving and arriving at the same time. OOOOO 5 out of 5 Afros

I hope they keep this theater open forever. It's stunning. They restored it beautifully. The ornate…read moredetails and grand architecture are really something to behold. The sound was fine and views seem good enough from just about every section, although I didn't go up on the balcony. The seats are small, as is the norm for theaters of this era. They were much more comfortable than other venues I have been to in the area. My only complaint was I am not sure the doors close (or there actually are any doors) from the (sumptuous) lobby, so sadly we could hear the staff from our seats. They were talking loudly by the doors to the orchestra area, super distracting. It was a live podcast, so probably not an issue if it's a loud concert. The beauty of this theater and it's history is the thing, and it makes for a memorable experience.

No long lines or congestion. Definitely recommend coming around an hour early if you want to get a drink, merch, and go to the bathroom before an 8pm show. We showed up at 7:30pm and barely made it through the doors at 8pm due to only 3 security lines. The line wrapped around the building down the street. I really appreciated the staff for managing the line and preventing line cutters. It was very exciting to see Lucy Darling and her right hand man, Mark. They were very funny and it was amazing to see them up close. The camera crew did great showing everything on the screen with subtitles and an ASL interpreter, but I still recommend getting seats as close as possible. I hope they come back!

The newly remodeled outdoor downtown LA pavilion is so pretty, it will take your breath away. And…read moreso will the low cost underground self-parking (only $10, which has got to be the best deal in town). The huge courtyard with giant fountain spans the three theatres there -- the Mark Taper, the Ahmanson (both for plays and musicals), and the mighty Dorothy Chandler (for opera and ballet). It's massive! We were there for the new Philip Glass opera, ancient Egypt's Akhnaten. Lots of Queen Nefertiti cosplay so it's worth getting there early for the people watching. Seats are impossibly pricey, so it may be a one-time thing but I'd say worth it. Our front row seats (but on the side so you miss a tiny, tiny bit of the stage) were about $200 each. The Dorothy Chandler is huge so you may need your (appropriately named) opera glasses if you're up in the hinterland. For most operas, there are "supertitles" above the stage which translate what you're watching. Robbie Yelp tip on food -- the sit-down restaurants on and adjacent to the plaza are super pricey. Instead, do this: the Mullin Wine Bar is right there on the pavilion. For two to share, get one pizza and one charcuterie plate. Both are delicious and filling; that's $50. Add drinks and you're getting close to a hundo, but it is what it is. Take your food and drinks out into the plaza for people watching until the opera bell rings. O sole mio!

We have given up our Season Pass because of the repeats, but now and again they have a new and very special opera. We just saw Akhnaten there and it was magical. It had a huge and so talented cast and it was perfect. The music was scored by Philip Glass and the BBC conductor did this one and she was amazing. It is a little pricy for good seats and I wish they had some decent seats, not in the last row of the balcony, that are more reasonably priced. Parking if you are in a normal care is easy. You can valet for a fee of about 20$ or park right across from the valet in the parking structure for a lot less and you just take the elevator and you will be in the middle of the pavilion. If you are in a large truck you will have a hard time finding a parking space. You will note the Dorothy Chandler because it is the big white one. The pavilion also houses the Mark Taper, which is a great place to see new plays and the Ahmanson, which for the most part has great musicals, but again, the repeats are too much. Their used to be great dinning there as it is pretty much the heart of Downtown LA, but the eateries there have really gotten bad, so eat elsewhere. It is beautiful and clean inside. The staff really needs to work on helping people find their seats and not just pointing. Get there on time. Have a great night.
