This is one of the best choices of our life. We used Groupon to try it out. That was FOUR years ago! :) We started with our two youngest children. They are learning how to defend themselves, gaining more confidence, practicing self discipline, and much more. My 14 year old is also in the ATA Legacy Instructor Training Program which teaches leadership skills that will be used her entire life. My 9 year old loves the positive discipline he receives. He thrives off of being built up by his team but also enjoys building up others. I joined about six months after my kids because Sr. Master Healey started a Mom's Club. It was life changing. Not only for my health but, also for my family. It brought us closer together because we were doing things as a family. No matter how hard we try as parents I think we all lack something somewhere. Healey's Legacy Master Martial Arts has helped fill that gap. I can't thank Mr. and Mrs. Sr. Master Healey enough. They (including Mr. Healey, Master Orvis, and Master Mckersie) are so passionate about what and how they teach. They are all amazing instructors! Very seldom can you find this kind of value. I/we are so blessed to be a part of this family (school). read more

We started our 4 year old there two weeks ago. We needed something to channel his energy and to build respect and discipline. My son loves going there! They have several ways to enforce positive behavior. My son earns stars and when he gets enough, he'll move up a level. We take him four days a week since he enjoys it so much. It's been two weeks and we already notice a difference at home! read more

I hate seeing this place called a "belt factory", but only because I did martial arts with people associated with this place yrs ago and though I don't know who is in charge these days I can tell you the idea is not to be a belt factory. There are great instructors and just because they tell you they are ready for the next belt doesn't mean you have to let your kid do it if you want to slow them down. With proper instructors who care about the kids and not the money I think martial arts is great for kids!! I recommend trying out a couple different places until you find what you're looking for for your child. If you just wanna give away money and let your kid THINK he's the next Bruce Lee then go to a "belt factory"!! They usually have a cheap 1 month "trial", so try it out and see what you think. Then you can decide which place is good for your kid long term. read more

From our oldest son who is almost a black belt, "This place is amazing. It gives me so much self-esteem, discipline, loyalty, and a lot of other life skills. I learned so much discipline, that I obey my parents most of the time (99%)." I wanted our children to enroll in a sport, but I wanted it to be indoors (out of the Arizona heat and sun), year-round, and a place in which the whole family can be involved. They have a seating area for families to watch their children practice, and I was able to bring our baby while watching our older children practice. I also appreciate the flexible schedule as they offer multiple classes and class times throughout the week. Fun games are incorporated into the curriculum which keep the classes fun and interesting. A most-important aspect of the martial arts paradigm is self defense, which is always covered. They keep you on your toes. The students are able to learn so many life skills, such as honesty, respect, discipline, self esteem, confidence, eye contact, and time management. I appreciate the school's star paper/sticker program, which reinforces praise, good behavior, self esteem, and confidence. The instructors also discuss goal setting. With practice, guidance, and support, our children are able to earn their achievements by way of belt ranking, tournaments, and being healthier. Students are able to exercise and stretch, since these are a part of the classes. I commend this business and the family who operates it. They are professionals, yet down-to-earth, and they are like a second family. Strong bonds are formed in this dojang. A++! read more

It takes something special to hold the interest of my 7th grade son, especially if doesn't have a screen and requires actual work! This is the only activity I've gotten him to try that he hasn't started losing interest in within a few practices/classes/lessons. Taekwondo gives him a goal to work towards, with milestones along the way to keep him motivated. Without the Healey family, though, I don't think earning new belts, and eventually a black belt, would have been enough to keep him interested. They have created an amazing environment where my socially anxious and self-conscious son feels comfortable. The difference I've seen in my son's confidence and attitude as well as the exercise he's finally getting is worth every penny! read more

We have been a part of the ATA family for almost a year now. I have been so impressed with the lessons. My son started at 4 years old and has learned so much. He has learned self defense, which I believe is so important. This is a martial arts class where all the instructors have become more like family. read more

I think the respondents below haven't bothered to think that Karate for Kids is ideal for many parents like myself. We are not looking for our child to be the next Bruce Lee, UFC champ or Bar Fight specialist. Many of us are looking for a place that instills values, discipline and basic martial arts in our children. I like how they have patience with kids and work well the parents. We are looking for an extra curricular activity for our children and like the discipline, respect and self defense that comes with karate. I guess for you UFC fighters, this place doesn't cut it, okay. But for the soccer moms and dads who want their kid to be in a supportive environment in which their kid is having fun and enjoying this, why am I going to complain? Regarding the belt factory comment...maybe they are but once again, I say fantastic! There are also dojos that deliberately hold students back and don't advance belts because they are trying to be selective and elitist. I don't want that either and there are plenty of those places around. I'll take a belt factory any day. With regard to price. Name a cheap martial arts center? You won't find one. They are all expensive and they all have their catches. You don't have to spend a lot if you don't choose to. Most of the students don't engage in weapons training so it's silly to imply all students pay for weapons and that's part of their expenses. read more

I just read Melissa D's review and laughed. It's either the owner himself posing as a woman, or a friend of his who has been going around and writing positive reviews of his schools (I've seen a few reviews written by the same person). I can't emphasize enough to stay away from the belt factory called "Karate for Kids", the chain really exists for the owners to feed off of parents' love for their children ($$) and not to help kids. While my son was enrolled I heard other parents' stories, and not many were positive. read more

My son and daughter both became blackbelts at this school. Now my daughter has a full scholarship for college while my son is a fourth degree blackbelt and teaches. Different paths, but both influenced by the discipline and fun from this art. I highly recommend. read more

Chandler location is a scam artist. My wife signed up my two kids.. My kids lost interest within a month, when I went there for disenrollement, they showed a contract where in fine print , it says, I have to pay 1200 dollars or a fine for disenrollement! They started charging my credit card automatically every month. Given them a written notice, after I paid a total 1400 dollars, Eventually, I have paid 1700 dollars so far.. Even though, my kids do not go there from the third month. They started charging. for graduation fee, equipement fee , extra class fee, even though NONE of these items were disclosed properly. Stay away from this facility.. They are scam artist.. I read more

Its 120 degrees outside! A small air purifier by the front door is not a replacement for airconditioning. The room is not comfortable for the parents watching let alone the kids working so hard. Use the money you milk from us and turn the air down before someone gets hurt. read more

We would strongly recommend this school to ANYONE! :) Our children aged 3 and 5 and enjoyed class so much, they are always laughing and smiling during class and us parents have just as much fun watching them! Mr. and Mrs. Healey (and their whole family) are just wonderful and they are so welcoming, we immediately felt like part of the ATA family. I have also been impressed with how quickly the Tiny Tigers program helped our children improve their discipline and respect. Right after the first class, they were saying "Yes, sir! Yes, ma'am!" when we asked them to do something at home. That in of itself was enough to convince me that every dollar we spent here was well worth it! If you are on the fence about trying this school - let me assure you that you should JUST DO IT and sign up! You will not be disappointed. read more

After nearly 5 years of attending classes at this Academy, I can truly say I have seen my grandson blossom with self confidence, self respect, discipline, honesty, self esteem and a true competitors mindset from attending classes with Master Healey. The environment here is so positive! Kids receive correction and discipline in such a positive manner that they just want to do more and to be better people. Legacy ATA is a huge family experience. Everyone is welcomed here as family. Many parents take classes right along side their kids! That's how I got started 2 and a half years ago and after losing nearly 40 lbs. My health has improved in too many ways to list. There is no other sport or recreational routine available anywhere better than what your kids will get here. They don't just come here to learn taekwondo, they come here to be outstanding citizens!! read more

I stumbled upon the reviews for Lee's ATA West Chandler and felt it necessary to post a more current review. Our family has been involved in ATA for five years and four of those years it has been with Lee's ATA Martial Arts. We have experienced several of their schools (Tempe, Chandler, West Chandler, etc.) and they all have wonderful things to offer for kids and adults. As with all people each instructor has their strengths and their weaknesses. It just takes a little effort on your part to find the right fit for you or your child. As for the West Chandler school, Master Healey is an excellent instructor. He motivates the kids, teaches discipline, and the kids have fun while learning. If your child needs extra help or modified instruction all of the instructors are willing to help. West Chandler is also a smaller school which is the perfect fit for our family. Yes, martial arts is a costly sport but it is so worth it! I have seen my son grow into a strong, confident young man and athlete. I've seen my husband the happiest when he is competing and sharing his knowledge of Tae kwon do with others. It's more than just an activity. You get out what you put in. Simple as that. Let's be honest, think about how much you might spend on video games, gaming systems, smartphones, etc for your kids. That's a lot of money. You could use that money for an ATA membership and get better results. ;-) read more

My son started with ATA a year ago because he was not interested in sports of any kind. Knowing that children need to experience a team building experience to instill confidence and self esteem, Taekwondo was the perfect fit. During the course of the year I've watched my son develop into a strong and confident child who has learned the skills of handling difficult peers with positive results. I'm not expecting my son to be the next Bruce lee or Jackie Chan. But I am certain the skills my son has learned with the wonderful people at Legacy will give him the supplemental support and confidence to be a wonderful contributor to society. read more

We were very excited to schedule our son's birthday party at their Gilbert location. We called early on a Tuesday and left a message. By 8pm no call back. We called again. A answered that seemed annoyed we were calling. We asked to schedule a party for our boy in the next few weeks. We were informed that they are scheduled out for 3 months. The last continued to be very short and not helpful at all. Why would you sell packages for the parties that are 3 to 4 months out. Our intent was to have the party and find out more about their programs so we can enroll our boys but from the rudeness we received , no call backs and other bad reviews this would be the last place we would consider. read more
